Do you wonder what your Catholic spouse believes and why? Have you ever thought about entering the Catholic Church? Have you been baptized but have not yet received the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation? If you answered yes to any of these, we hope you ll consider the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Our RCIA program offers the opportunity to learn about the Church s beliefs, Biblical foundations, and beauty as well as her 2000-year-old history, traditions, and practices. Our classes focus on the teaching of the Church and the experience of being Catholic. They will prepare you to enter the Church at Easter, when we celebrate the sacraments of Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation. Please join our RCIA process, to ask your questions, get answers, and share your own insights and faith story. YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE AND ETERNITY TO GAIN! For more information, please contact us at (719) , Ext. 0 or rcia@holytrinitycos.org. New Parishioners Not a parishioner of Holy Trinity? There are many reasons to become a registered member: religious education classes, opportunities for Christian service in the community, letters of recommendation to serve as godparents and sponsors for newcomers to the faith, pre-printed tithing envelopes (if desired), an annual report of your charitable offerings and a subscription to the Colorado Catholic Herald. Registration forms are available in the foyers or online

4 HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH December 9, 2018 Advent The liturgical season of Advent marks the time of spiritual preparation by the faithful before Christmas. Advent begins on the Sunday closest to the Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle (Nov. 30). It spans four Sundays and four weeks of preparation, although the last week of Advent is usually truncated because of when Christmas falls. (For instance, this year, the fourth Sunday of Advent is obviously on Sunday, and then that evening is Christmas Eve.) The celebration of Advent has evolved in the spiritual life of the Church. The historical origins of Advent are hard to determine with great precision. In its earliest form, beginning in France, Advent was a period of preparation for the Feast of the Epiphany, a day when converts were baptized; so the Advent preparation was very similar to Lent with an emphasis on prayer and fasting which lasted three weeks and later was expanded to 40 days. In 380, the local Council of Saragossa, Spain, established a threeweek fast before Epiphany. Inspired by the Lenten regulations, the local Council of Macon, France, in 581 designated that from Nov. 11 (the Feast of St. Martin of Tours) until Christmas fasting would be required on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Eventually, similar practices spread to England. In Rome, the Advent preparation did not appear until the sixth century, and was viewed as a preparation for Christmas with less of a penitential bent. Altar Linen Ministry Each time our priests celebrate Mass, they use a number of different linens purificators that are used to wipe the chalices holding the Precious Blood and corporals where the sacred vessels containing the Body and Blood of the Lord are placed. We have a very devoted volunteer who works each week to make sure that all the linens used in the liturgy are carefully and reverently cleaned and ready to be used at the next Mass. However, she would like some help. This is a humble, behind-the-scenes ministry where you will receive many graces for your service. Please consider donating your time and talent for this ministry. After all, many hands make light work. Contact the parish office at x0 to volunteer. Advent Schedule ADVENT REFLECTIONS WITH FR. Jane and Vince Biondi Mary and Larry Thompson Food Item of the Week Feed the Poor... Please help us feed the poor by donating the following item of the week: pancake mix, syrup and scalloped potatoes Adult Faith Formation Catholic Apologetics: Explaining our Beautiful Faith! Are you caught off-guard by challenges to our beliefs about Mary and the saints, Scripture and Tradition, purgatory, the Real Presence? Are you stymied by questions about the Crusades, the current scandal, the relationship between faith and science, the meaning of suffering, the problem of transgenderism? In our first class, we looked at the basics of apologetics and then addressed some of the questions we Catholics have been getting ever since the Protestant Reformation. In this week s class, we ll focus on the special challenges posed by Mormon missionaries who come knocking at our door. While we may be tempted to pull the drapes and pretend we re not home, God is sending those missionaries to us for a reason: many of them are fallen-away Catholics who need to hear the truth about Christ and His Church. Our series will help you respond to tough questions and give you confidence to talk to, not hide from, those door-to-door missionaries. Please join us Sunday morning to find out how you might be the answer to some Catholic parent s prayers! Date Dec 9 Dec 16 Topic Strangers at Your Door: Jehovah Witnesses (JWs) Apologetics: Topics of our Time Join us Sundays at 9:15 AM in the Hope House. For more information about these and future Adult Faith Formation topics, contact Phil & Connie Pratt at or check out our Adult Faith Formation webpage at AdultFaithFormation.aspx.
