Wallace, Headmaster Welcome to Saint Thomas, a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. Our mission is to worship, love and serve Our Lord Jesus Christ through the Anglican tradition and our unique choral heritage. Please switch off all cellular telephones and pagers. THE TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST OCTOBER 10, 2010 CHORAL EUCHARIST 11 a.m. Setting Missa Brevis Benjamin Britten ( ) Prelude Lied, from Douze Pièces Gaston Litaize ( ) Hymn 460 HYFRYDOL The Opening Acclamation and the Collect for Purity The Summary of the Law Kyrie eleison Gloria in excelsis Deo The Collect of the Day The Old Testament Lesson Ruth 1:1-19a Psalm 113 Anglican Chant (Vann) (Sung by the Choir. Please remain seated.) P RAISE the Lord, ye servants;* O praise the Name of the Lord. 2 Blessed be the Name of the Lord* from this time forth for evermore. 3 The Lord's Name is praised* from the rising up of the sun unto the going down of the same. 4 The Lord is high above all heathen,* and his glory above the heavens. 5 Who is like unto the Lord our God, that hath his dwelling so high,* and yet humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven and earth! 6 He taketh up the simple out of the dust,* and lifteth the poor out of the mire; 7 That he may set him with the princes,* even with the princes of his people. 8 He maketh the barren woman to keep house,* and to be a joyful mother of children. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,* and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,* world without end. Amen. The Epistle II Timothy 2:3-15 Hymn 390 The Holy Gospel Saint Luke 17:11-19 Sermon The Rector The Nicene Creed The Prayers of the People (Please kneel.) 2 The Confession and Absolution The Peace The Greetings (Please be seated.) Word of God the most high, our sole hope, Eternal day of the earth and heavens As we break the silence of the peaceful night Divine savior, look down upon us! Imbue us with the fire of thy great mercy, So that hell itself will flee at the sound of your voice. Disperse the sleep which leads our languishing souls To stray from the path of righteousness! O Christ show your favor to your faithful people Who have come together to worship you, Receive the praises that they offer up to your immortal glory, And may they come back laden with the gift of your grace! Jean Racine The Doxology Hymn 380 Stanza 3 Sanctus and Benedictus The Breaking of the Bread Invitation to Communion OLD 100TH All baptized Christians are invited to receive Holy Communion. Saint Thomas Aquinas

4 MUSIC NOTES Benjamin Britten s Missa Brevis in D was written in 1959 for the boys of Westminster Cathedral Choir, London. Britten had heard the boys sing under their director George Malcolm and had been excited by the unconventional strong-toned singing that they produced. Malcolm had cultivated a uniquely continental sound in his boys choir that was utterly different from the traditional soft, flutey tones associated then with the Anglican choral tradition. The work displays Britten s characteristic flair for writing for children but retains a devout liturgical gravitas. The Gloria, with its uneven rhythms is a lively setting that immediately appeals to young performers and lends appropriate joy to the text. The bell-like Sanctus is followed by the quiet fervor of the Benedictus set for two solo voices above an organ walking bass. The Agnus Dei is an agonized prayer for peace as the voices sing a forlorn melodic line over a repeated bass figure in the organ. The flowers today are offered to the glory of God, in memory of the following: Doris and Frederick Blymer, Robert Erskine Douglas, William Harris Douglas, Francis Laurens Vintin Hoppin and Margaret Crane Hurlbut.
