1 WARWICK TEAM MINISTRY Weekly Newsletter WELCOME TO OUR SERVICES. If you are a newcomer to St Mary s Church, or a visitor to the area, please introduce yourself to one of the sidespeople or the clergy. We hope that you enjoy worshipping with us. Communicant members of any Christian church are welcome to make their communion with us. If you do not wish to receive communion, but would like to receive God s blessing, simply hold this service booklet when you come to the altar rail. St Mary s seeks to be an inclusive church and welcoming to people of all ages and backgrounds. We have a carpeted area and pew bags available for the youngest members of our congregation, if they wish to use it. And they may like to take an adult with them! If you re a UK tax payer the money you place in the collection can be increased by around 25% if you fill out a blue envelope in the nave chairs or by the main entrance and allow us to retrieve the tax you ve already paid & put it towards the work of St Mary s. 3 NOTICES EVENSONG TONIGHT commemorates the centennial of the Zeebrugge Raid on 22/23 Apr It was escorted by HMS Warwick in which Vice Admiral Sir Roger Keyes had placed his ensign alongside that of the destroyer's commander s, now exhibited over the Welcomers desk. The occasion will be attended by a representative of the Town Council and Western Front Association. WEBSITE: Regular visitors to St Mary s website will know that it is in the process of a wholesale update. Many thanks to Oli Pethick who has been undertaking this important task for us. VOLUNTEERS EVENSONG: We shall be giving thanks to God for the work of the tremendous teams of volunteers at St Mary s on Pentecost Sunday (20 th May). If you volunteer here in any way, please do come along. ANNUAL REPORTS.are available by the noticeboards with the draft Annual Accounts to Dec If you collected an Annual Report last Sun the Server s Report was unfortunately left out. There are copies by the noticeboards. ACCOMODATION REQUIRED Do you, or does someone you know, have a granny flat /annex/basement accommodation that needs a tenant? If so, the Director of Music would like to hear from you! We are considering plans for a future Organ Scholarship and are exploring accommodation options. Please contact Oliver Hancock (dofm@stmaryswarwick.org.uk) WARWICK FESTIVAL 2018 we will once again be taking part and are looking forward to hosting a WRITING WORKSHOP to reveal the legend of Guy of Warwick, between 2 and 4pm on Sat 26th May. Come along and hear the story of Guy and Felice brought to life by Jenny Heap, local writer and poet. Then write your own story or poem or even create a picture. At 4.30pm the budding authors and artists will perform their stories and poems and meet some special visitors Guy of Warwick & Friends. Tickets 3 per child (age range 5 13) accompanying grown up FREE. A perfect opportunity for adults to take a leisurely tour of our magnificent church, steeped in the country s history. Have a cup of tea/coffee and homemade cake in our Pop up Café and finish by hearing the children s tales of a daring knight! 4 FLAG OF ST GEORGE thanks to some very generous donations from David & Sonia Guest, Wednesday morning communion group and an anonymous donation we have been able to purchase in total four flags at today s prices to enable us to continue flying the flag for another couple of years. FRIENDS OF ST MARY'S - SOME DATES FOR YOUR DIARY The Friends AGM will take place in the Nave immediately after this morning's Eucharist. Everyone welcome Copies of the Agenda, Chairman's report, accounts and the minutes of last year's AGM are available on the Church website. A limited number of printed copies will be available at the meeting. "Coventry Cathedral and Sir Basil Spence" This lecture will now be given by Sarah Hosking and will take place at St Michael's Centre, Budbrooke, on Wed 23 rd May. More details on the Friends notice board and the reception desk in Church. Friday 29 th June. Visit to Coventry Cathedral and the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum. BIBLE STUDY THANKS: In 2005 Elsie Kibble, a teacher and local historian who was a devoted member of St Mary s congregation, finished her book The Stained Glass Windows In The Collegiate Church of St Mary, Warwick. Sadly Elsie died in 2012 but it was her lasting wish that any remaining profits from this publication should go towards Bible-based activities. To that end, those charged with administering the funds, offered to donate money to cover the cost of the DVDs and handbooks for the current "The Bible Course". This kind offer has been received with grateful thanks in memory of a lovely, talented lady. The course runs on alternate Thu afternoons at St Michael s Budbrooke from 1.15 to 3.15 and Thu evenings at St John the Baptist, Berkswell from 7.30 to It is possible to pick and mix venues. The cost is 34 for all six sessions or 7 per session. 5 BIBLE READINGS PRAYER OF THE WEEK High above our town of Warwick, we fly our flag of St George, our patron saint, who we remember today. Let us show our courage and determination as he did, And let his flag be a constant reminder that sometimes we all have to be brave to create a world where people no longer live in fear. We thank you Father, for all our saints, who offer us a model of the people we strive to be. Through our own brave Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen VOLUNTEER 'LISTENERS' FOR NEW BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP WANTED We are starting a monthly bereavement support group and are still looking to recruit 2-3 more volunteers. The sessions will be facilitated by a Main Leader and we are looking for volunteer Listeners for the group. Our Listeners will help the main leader to facilitate the sessions as well as supporting attendees and serving refreshments. Listeners will receive training to develop listening skills, self-awareness and appropriate safeguarding. We are hoping to hold our first training session 7-9pm Monday 23 rd April at Saltisford Church subject to volunteer availability. The bereavement support group is likely to take place on a weekday daytime or evening starting in May/June. Dates are yet to be decided as the initiative is in the early stages of development and we hope to respond to demand as to when our sessions are held and how many groups we establish. People will be able to attend the support group for 6 sessions (6 months) and if they still need additional support after this we will signpost them to the appropriate services. Please note volunteers who have experienced a bereavement in the past 9 months are ineligible for the role but can but put on a waiting list to take part in future training. Listeners may be appointed subject to interview and references and it would be preferable if you have had previous bereavement awareness training or experience. Come & meet new friends.

6 MESSY CHURCH WOODLOES starts on Sat 12 th May pm at Woodloes Primary School. It will be monthly on the 2 nd Sat of the month (excluding August). Messy Church aims to: a) Mission an unreached area of Warwick; b) Provide an opportunity for whole families to engage with faith. We are looking for people to join our volunteers to fulfil the following roles: Prayer support Welcome & registration team Catering & refreshments team Craft, story and worship leaders & helpers Set up or clear up team Distributing leaflets on the Woodloes estate We are asking volunteers to be available between 9.30am-1pm on the Sat of Messy Church and available for a monthly follow up meeting depending on what role they are undertaking. SUPPORTING THE MUSIC OF ST MARY S We are very proud of the musical tradition at St Mary s. If you would like to support the music-making here we would love to hear from you. It might be sponsoring a service of Choral Evensong in memory of a loved one, or offering a contribution towards the cost of a set of music for the Choir, or sponsoring a concert/recital/something else! Warwick District Foodbank operates from seven Distribution Centres across the Warwick, Leamington and Kenilworth communities. During the last 12 months it has distributed emergency food parcels to over 4,250 people, all of whom have experienced some form of recognised crisis and were referred to Foodbank by a statutory or charitable agency. 21% of Foodbank s clients came from Warwick and of the 372 Foodbank vouchers that were redeemed at the Saltisford Foodbank Centre it resulted in the feeding of 590 adults and 305 children respectively. To aid the work of Foodbank they have recently received some generous gifts from a few different organisations to buy a much needed van. To support the running of the van without draining the charity s resources a new scheme has commenced called Club 50 where Warwick District Foodbank are hoping a minimum of 50 people will club together to each pay 5 a month via direct debit (see poster on the notice board). Can you help? This charity is doing a wonderful work in our town and for only 5 each month you could make a very valuable contribution to this work. For a direct debit form please see noticeboard.

ECCLESIASTICAL INSURANCE celebrates its 130 year anniversary of insuring Anglican churches. They are making a thank you offer to donate 130 to the church each time anyone from the church family clergy, church workers or volunteers take out a home insurance policy with Ecclesiastical during the next year. When an insurance policy is taken out, by quoting Trust 130 & nominating St Mary s, Ecclesiastical will make a 130 donation.
