2 The Collect of the Day The people stand or kneel. Priest The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Priest Let us pray. Out of the embrace of mercy and righteousness, you have brought forth joy and dignity for your people, O Holy One of Israel. Remember now your ancient promise: make straight the paths that lead to you, and smooth the rough ways, that in our day we might bring forth your compassion for all humanity. Amen. Malachi 3:1-4 The prophet promises that, as the day of the Lord s judgment nears, God s messenger will be sent to make ready the Lord s way. The priests and temple servants, who say they are waiting for the Lord, need cleansing and purifying most of all. Suddenly the refiner will come to the temple, and then the offering of the people will be pleasing to the Lord. On this day Christians recognize that, with the bringing of the child Jesus to the temple, the time of purifying judgment has begun. See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight-- indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner s fire and like fullers soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 2

3 Canticle 16: The Song of Zechariah Benedictus Dominus Deus Luke 1: A song of thanksgiving and prophecy. The child will be called the prophet of the Most High and will make a way for the Lord. Cantor People Blessed be the God of Israel who comes to set us free and raises up new hope for us: a Branch from David s tree. So have the prophets long declared that with his mighty arm God would turn back our enemies and all that wish us harm. 3

4 Philippians 1:3-11 Paul greets the new disciples in the town of Philippi, gives thanks for their sharing in the gospel, and prays that they may be found without fault on the judgment day of Christ. It is likely that this message of affection and appreciative joy was written toward the latter part of Paul s ministry, perhaps while he was in prison. He expresses great confidence that the work of grace begun by God in his converts will be brought to fruition. I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God s grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. 5 Luke 3:1-6 Luke sets the prophetic ministry of John the Baptist in the context of its time in history. It was customary during this era to date events with reference to the lives of rulers and well-known public figures. Within this history the word of God comes to John as he preaches his baptism of repentance. His ministry is in fulfillment of the words of Isaiah concerning the one who prepares the way of the Lord. Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God. 6 The Nicene Creed All Stand. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. 11 Priest We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The Priest breaks the consecrated bread and distributes it to the altar party. Fraction Anthem The people sing the refrain: Priest The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. All are welcome to receive the Holy Communion. The bread is received in the open palm. The wine, if desired, may be taken from the cup by drinking (guide the chalice gently to your lips by the base) or by dipping the bread. Those who do not wish to receive Communion are welcome to come forward for a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. During this time a prayer leader will be in the back of the church, by the font, to offer healing prayers. If you have a wheat sensitivity, you may ask the priest for a gluten-free wafer. 12

Youth in Action Thanks you for your Generosity Thanks to the hard work of kids in the Youth in Action group and the generosity of the St. Dunstan's community and the public, the YIA group raised $2,360 and purchased and wrapped 212 Christmas gifts for farmworker children over the weekend! The kids will give out the gifts on Friday December 14th in Salinas. Last year this event attracted 300 children and there were not enough gifts to go around. So if you didn't get to donate yet, you can still leave gifts for children ages 3 to 11 in the office until December 11th. If the gifts are wrapped, please write on the outside whether they are for girls or boys and for what age they are appropriate. 16 St. Lucy Day Today! For the finale of our children's advent program, the kids will celebrate the kind and brave saint who is known for wearing a crown of candles to light her way as she carried food and other provisions to Christians hiding from persecution by the Romans. The kids will hear a gentle telling of St. Lucy's story, make and wear crowns of candles, and eat traditional St. Lucia buns. What is Advent Really about? Here we are in the season of Advent, and again preparing for the season of Christmas. Truly, no one has to tell us how to prepare! We know the drill: the tree, cards, gifts, house all magically accomplished by December 24!!! But what does it mean to prepare yourself spiritually? To slow down and just be? To open your heart to something new that God may be calling you to do? Something you never dreamed possible! Indeed, Advent is about the preparation for Christmas. But it s even more. It s about the expectation of Christ being born anew in each of us again and again. It s a miracle! Please join us for discussion at 9 am on Sunday morning in the Outer Office. Light and Love (Ages infant 4 years) 10 am Sundays in the nursery A safe, sunny space where the youngest children can learn and play while parents experience the service. Godly Play (Children 5 9) 10 am Sundays in Carlyle Hall Based on Montessori principles, Godly Play allows children to explore their own innate spirituality through engagement with stories from the bible. Re:form (Tweens and Teens) 11:30 12:45 Sundays in Carlyle Hall Through games, videos and discussion, the kids have fun and develop their critical thinking and faithful reflection. Youth in Action (Tweens and Teens) At least once per month; sites vary A kid-driven volunteer service program through which our youth address social and environmental issues, help others in the community and and have fun! (Smaller children also usually welcome, depending on the project.) Through next Sunday Holiday In-Gathering for Nancy's Project The holidays are a difficult time for our farm worker families. Children are out of school and do not get a school lunch. There is little work in the fields this time of year, and many of the men have gone to the Yuma, Arizona fields to pick, leaving their families here to cope the best they can until they return. Nancy s Project will be doing an in-gathering of non-perishable food for our farm worker families for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We hope you will participate by bringing non-perishable food items to the church for the next several weeks. All food will be distributed in Salinas, Greenfield, San Miguel and San Ardo between now and Christmas. Suggestions include: canned tuna, peanut butter, canned meats, pinto beans, rice, spaghetti, canned fruit, canned tomatoes and vegetables and oatmeal. Baskets will be at the back of the church for your donations. Thank you for making Christmas better for these hard-working people! 17
