4 Connections by Joe Lesko Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time The connection for our readings this Sunday is a theme of sending out. Amaziah is ousting the prophet Amos from Bethel for spreading God s word, while Jesus is sending out the disciples on their first evangelistic mission to preach the Gospel. The Book of Amos is the oldest of the prophetic literature. He is a layman with no special training for the religious ministry. He writes during a time of peace and prosperity. It is also a time of social and religious corruption. He reminds the people that God has acknowledged Israel as His covenant people but they have abused the privilege associated with His covenant. Since they have ignored the Covenant dictates, the curses associated for ignoring the covenantal agreement shall come to them. Amos directs his words at the leadership the king, the priests and the upper class people. In the preceding verses before today s reading, the priest of Bethel has sent a message to King Jeroboam II to report what Amos has said that this king will die by the sword and Israel will go into exile from their native land. The priest is Amaziah. Jeroboan I has set a golden calf at several locations and has installed priests who are not Levites. Amaziah is not a priest of Yahweh. The passage begins with Amaziah ordering Amos out of Bethel. He calls Amos a visionary, a contemptuous name for prophet. He is labeling Amos a foreigner, for Amos is a Judahite (a citizen of the Southern Kingdom) and Bethel is on the southern border of the Northern Kingdom. Amos is interfering in Israel s religious and political affairs in speaking what Yawhew has directed him to do. Amos cites his credentials claiming he is not a professional prophet or connected with other prophets. He is a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores. (The sycamore is a fruit related to the fig but smaller. It is a food of the poor. At a ceratin stage in its development, the dresser has to puncture the fruit so it will grow large enough to be eaten.) Amos is a prophet not by choice, inheritance, nor training. He is a prophet by the intervention of Yawhew. The Gospel reading follows last week s where we heard how Jesus has been rejected by His own people. The reading ended He was amazed at their lack of faith. The Gospel begins with Jesus organizing the twelve into pairs for their first evangelical mission. The pairs are not just for safety. Two witnesses are required in any life and death situation (Deuteronomy 19:6). Preaching the Gospel of Jesus the Christ is preaching about spiritual life and death. The sending of the Apostles is an extension of Jesus ministry of teaching, healing and exorcizing. They are to do what He has been teaching them. Jesus requires them to be free of any form of attachment. A disciple, who has the mission of bringing the Kingdom of God to souls through preaching, should not rely on human resources but on the providence of God. They are dependent on local hospitality. The washing of a traveler s feet on arrival is a sign of welcome. When hospitality like this is not offered, they are to leave quietly. Mark is the only evangelist who speaks of anointing with oil. Oil is often used for treating wounds. The Apostles also use it for the miraculous cure of physical illness by the authority given them by Jesus. This anointing is the suggestion of the sacrament of the sick. Anointing cures the wounds of the soul and bodily diseases as well. The first reading has Amos being sent away to get rid of him and his teaching of God s word. Jesus sending is an extension of His public ministry in preparing the Apostles to take charge of His Church after His ascension. They will be teaching God s word not hindering it.
