Divine Mercy Chaplet A new practice has begun in our parish and ALL are welcome to join us as individuals pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet AFTER our 8:00 am morning Mass on Tuesdays and Fridays. The prayer takes no longer than minutes and is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on God s mercy and love for us. This week s passage: from Divine Mercy Explained - Keys to the Message & Devotion by Fr. Michael Gaitley The Message of Divine Mercy So how do we get the great graces of Divine Mercy in our time? All you need is one little word F-I-N-C-H This stands for Feast, Image, Novena, Chaplet and Hour. Over the next several weeks we will explain the importance of each word as it relates to the importance of understanding God s Divine Mercy for us at this time in our world. This week s word highlight will be FEAST! We continue this week to focus on the fourth letter of FINCH the letter C which is for CHAPLET Additional words told by Jesus to Faustina who pray the chaplet: The souls that say this chaplet will be embraced by My mercy during their lifetime and especially at the hour of their death. Oh what great graces I will grant to souls who say this chaplet; the very depths of My tender mercy are stirred for the sake of those who say the chaplet. My daughter, encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given to you. It pleases Me to grant everything they ask of Me by saying the chaplet. When hardened sinners say it, I will their souls with peace, and the hour of their death will be a happy one. INVITING ALL MEMBERS OF THE PARISH: DO YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE LIFE OF ST. 4 Connections Second Sunday of Ordinary Time by Joe Lesko Our concerns from the two passages are presented as marriage feasts. Both point to a future for the faithful in the new Zion, a new Jerusalem. The words Zion and Jerusalem are same references. The city of Jerusalem is built on Mount Zion and the Temple sets on Mount Moriah. They are used as interchangeable place names. Isaiah begins with a prophecy of greatness to come to God s people in their return from exile. He refuses to remain silent and declares a period of vindication. The Lord Himself will proclaim the City as My Delight and Espoused. The prophet continues describing the new glory to come as the Lord holds the city as a diadem (a crown worn as a sign of royalty). This image refers to the ancient practice of showing the local deity wearing a crown. The crown itself is fashioned after the city walls. The Lord holds His crown in His hands for Jerusalem is His possession. The passage concludes to a restored Israel when she was youthful and innocent. She is the Lord s virgin spouse. For the Lord delights in you and makes your land his spouse. This marriage theme calls thoughts of thoughts of the marriage feast at Cana, the Gospel passage for today. The Church, which Christ comes to establish as the new Israel, is His bride. Like His Father in Isaiah s passage, Christ builds a new people much like a young man marries a virgin. As the purveyor of hope, Isaiah is describing a time of Israel s glorious return to their beloved land. The present is a time of great afflictions which have fallen on the people of Judah and Jerusalem and which have come by their own sinfulness. Their wickedness has drawn the wrath of Yawhew. An outward show of prosperity hides their greed, extortion, oppression of the poor, wanton luxury, debauchery, and glaring immorality. Isaiah seeks to startle the nation into repentance and reform by predicting the doom that Yawhew is preparing for it, if it continues in its wickedness. Isaiah is not just a prophet of doom. He is also a prophet of hope. The role of a prophet is not one of a soothsayer; he does not predict the future. His role is to monitor the adherence to the Mosaic Covent, to warn of God s curses that shall come if the Covenant is not kept, and to point to the blessings which come from obedience. The connector theme for the Old Testament and the Gospel is a theme of marriage. The concluding verses of the first reading contain words that reference marriage. Each metaphorically refer to Yawhew as the groom and the nation of Israel as His bride.. Yawhew loves and protects her as a husband protects his wife. The Gospel of John suggests that Jesus, complying with His Mother s request, shows that He is the long awaited Messiah. The nuptial from the Isaiah reading has a marriage consummated in Jesus through His passion and death. He is the groom and His Church is His bride. John s Gospel begins with a mention to on the third day. Marriage feasts generally lasted seven days. The third day, the day of Christ s Resurrection, occurs on the seventh day of Genesis imagery that John patterns for the beginning of his Gospel. The third day is also the day of Covenant when God s new creation Jesus manifests His glory. Mary s observation to her Son of the shortage of wine is not a request for a miracle. She is counting on His resourcefulness. Her concern is to avoid embarrassment for her close relatives. She, Jesus, and His disciples have been invited to the feast. Their invitation suggests that they are related to either the groom or the bride. No where in the Bible does Jesus address Mary as Mother. In Jesus time to address her as woman is not disrespectful. It is similar to calling her madam in a formal situation. Eve is called woman before the fall when she is sinless and pure in God s eyes. Mary is the new Eve conceived without sin and without sin her entire life. These water jars hold approximately 20 gallon of water. Filled to the brim indicates the abundance of the riches of redemption that Jesus shall administer. The feast has 121 to 180 gallons of quality wine. The word sign appears in the final verse and John repeats it frequently in the first half of his Gospel. Among these are Christ s miracles. Johns cites just seven. Sign works to encourage witnesses to believe. They further signify Christ for who He is. Both passages signal the wait for salvation and redemption. Isaiah offers hope for the glory that will come with the restoration of the people in their homeland. Christ s miracle manifests who He is for His disciples begin to believe in Him. Prayers for Mary Ann Mizikar, John Herb Walton, Mary Therese Beers, Edith Melago and Ellona Pendrick who died recently. May we continue to pray for them and their families during this time of sorrow.
