Divine Mercy Chaplet A new practice has begun in our parish and ALL are welcome to join us as individuals pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet AFTER our 8:00 am morning Mass on Tuesdays and Fridays. The prayer takes no longer than minutes and is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on God s mercy and love for us. This week s passage: from Divine Mercy Explained - Keys to the Message & Devotion by Fr. Michael Gaitley The Message of Divine Mercy So how do we get the great graces of Divine Mercy in our time? All you need is one little word F-I-N-C-H This stands for Feast, Image, Novena, Chaplet and Hour. Over the next several weeks we will explain the importance of each word as it relates to the importance of understanding God s Divine Mercy for us at this time in our world. This week s word highlight will be FEAST! We begin this week to focus on the third letter of FINCH the letter N which is for NOVENA A novena is basically nine days of prayer in a row. Jesus taught St. Faustina a novena that he wanted her to pray and that we can all pray. Each, he asked that a different group of people be entrusted to him. The novena can be prayed at any time but the most special time of day leads to Divine Mercy Sunday, the Sunday after Easter. The novena is begun on Good Friday and ends 9 days later on the Sunday after Easter. Jesus promises By this novena, I will grant every possible grace to souls. Adult Education Opportunities Many thanks to the children who took part in our Christmas Eve Mass and to our Youth who created the Live Nativity. 4 Connections by Joe Lesko Feast of The Holy Family The two passages of scripture are well suited to illustrate the cause and example for the Church s establishing this feast day to honor the Holy Family. Sirach sets the fidelity to the fourth commandment while Luke reveals a young Jesus fulfilling His mission given to Him from the Father to be among the people. Sirach establishes and Jesus presents the example of honoring one s parents. Sirach gives instruction what a father is to do as a parent before he begins the lesson of how children are to honor their father. Note that twice in the nine verses Sirach states, He who honors his father atones his sins (v 6) and For kindness to a father will not be forgotten, firmly planted against the debt of your sins... (v 14). Fidelity to the fourth commandment atones for sins. The relationship to our earthly parents must mirror or echo our relationship to our heavenly Father. Luke s narrative concerns the Holy Family on a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem. The Law prescribes the pilgrimage for 3 major feasts: Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles; however custom excuses those who live a distance from all but the Passover. The rabbis are not in agreement whether or not women and children are required to make the pilgrimages. Males aged 12 and over are required to make it. The distance the Holy Family will have to travel from Nazareth to Jerusalem is about 60 miles as an arrow flies but 85 miles by the highway. Jesus is now 12, the age when a boy officially reaches manhood. Thus, he travels with His parents for this feast. They stay an entire week to celebrate the Passover meal of the unleavened bread. Entire villagers usually join in the trek, breaking into two groups, one of men and the other of women. Children can join either group. Mary and Joseph thinking Jesus is with one or the other at first do not miss Him. After a day s walk they discover that He is missing and return to Jerusalem where they find Him in the Temple after a three-day search. Remember that in Hebrew numerology three is number of completeness, Jesus accepting the Father s mission. (This is a possible reference to the three days Jesus will spend in the tomb.) In one of the outer courts of the Temple, which is the place where the teachers taught, listeners would sit at their feet, occasionally questioning and responding to the teachers. This is what the young Jesus was doing. His questions and answers drew the attention of the teachers, for Jesus spoke wisely and well informed. These details suggest that Jesus has come to the center much like a teacher. Now the teachers have become the students. He display great knowledge of the Torah and its interpretation. Imagine the thoughts of Mary and Joseph when they realize that they had lost the Son of God, a fact they knew since the Annunciation, and had been placed in their care by God Himself. Jesus abrupt response to Mary s concern implies the close relationship between Jesus and His Father, a closeness much like Sirach s instruction of fidelity a child shall show to his parents. Mary and Joseph realize that His reply held a deeper meaning which they did not understand the full implication of what divine Sonship involved, that His relationship to God takes precedence over His relationship to them. The conclusion establishes the obedience Jesus has held for his earthily parents. He had lived like any other Nazarite. He has worked the same trade as Joseph and has earned His living by the sweat of His brow. This is the last reference of Joseph in the Gospels. Obedient to Joseph and his guidance, Jesus grows to perfect manhood in all ways physically, intellectually, emotionally, spiritually for the mission that lay ahead of Him. Sirach proposes that he who honors the father and shows fidelity receives atonement for sin. Luke presents Jesus accepting the mission from His Father to teach salvation. At an age of entering manhood Jesus displays the honor to be given His Father. Our readings balance what is taught in the Old Testament and followed in the New Testament. Prayers for Joseph Emanuel and Helen Rylander who died recently. May we continue to pray for them and their families during this time of sorrow. MEMORIAL GIFTS With deepest gratitude we acknowledge the following gifts: To St. Florian Church In memory of Joseph Emanuele By: MP Cares Staff of the Mt.
