4 Connections by Joe Lesko Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time The Bread of Life theme from Chapter 6 of John s Gospel is Jesus call to have faith in the mission the Father has given to Him. During the past few Sundays the Gospel passages have been paired with food and water of various narratives from the Old Testament. Today from the Book of Proverbs we hear a meal prepared by Lady Wisdom whose purpose is to lead the foolish (the unlearned ones or the simple ones) to an understanding of life itself. Lady Wisdom has prepared a sumptuous meal and has sent her maidens out to invite all to the meal. The food is appropriate for a feast. She has prepared spiced wine and dressed meat. Her invitation is such that the foolish will stay away. A degree of inherent wisdom is to accept her invitation of correction and teaching which is the symbolic meaning of the meal. To not come she says, Forsake foolishness that you may live; advance in the way of understanding is her urgent cry. We might equate her call to dine with her as the Eucharist in the Heavenly Passover meal which we have joined at the 3 rd cup of the meal and await the fourth cup in the Kingdom of God. The dinner is really a metaphor for the life of salvation. Wisdom ( the food to sustain physical and spiritual life) may be defined as the correct way to live to gain the spirituality needed to gain the eternal world. The Israelite would think of the promised meal eaten at end time (Isaiah 25:6; 55: 1-5). John s description of Jesus Bread of Life discourse where the Eucharist theme has been reached solves the mystery of Jesus discourse. To move backward and forward simultaneously we recall John the Baptist s identifying Jesus as the Lamb of God and the first Passover meal. The lamb to be eaten at this meal gives physical and spiritual life while the blood on the lenil is the mark of God s people to be saved from death. This Passover meal is the beginning of God s promise for the Israelites return to the Promised Land. Even Christ s Crucifixion is a sacramental meal. The focus here is Jesus broken body and spilled blood in order to nourish the world s spirituality for salvation which includes the Eucharist as spiritual nourishment and sustained by Jesus teaching. The Christian must assimilate Jesus action to become the essential fiber of his life to secure salvation. In essence, Jesus is the superior manna which perfects this original gift of God for man s eternal salvation. The passages give us the way to a life that is centered on God as our creator and sustainer of our physical and spiritual lives. He provides food to nourish us physically and gives us the gift of His Son to nourish us spiritually. Both gifts become the means to our salvation to be with God and His Son through eternity, our reward for faith in and of His Son. 10th Annual Mass Honoring Our Lady of Czestochowa And the 100th Anniversary of Polish Independence August 27, :00 PM St. Paul Cathedral, Oakland section of Pittsburgh, PA For more information: or millera@polishheritage.org Annual Pro-Life Prayer Breakfast Oct. 20 at Connare Center The Greensburg Diocesan Council of the National Council of Catholic Women is sponsoring the annual Interfaith Pro-Life Prayer Breakfast Oct. 20 at the Bishop Connare Center. John before his homily as soon as possible. This update will address the delays in completing the Project, any unresolved complications, and what steps are planned to resolve the complications. ST. FLORIAN S INVITE A CATHOLIC BACK TO CHURCH CAMPAIGN is now in the OUT- REACH phase. Between now and the end of the year is the time to pray for enlightenment about how and when to reach out and the right words to use. See the effort and difficulty of this as a measure of your love for the person to whom you reach out, and also as a measure of your love for Christ who desires that person to live in communion with Him. At some point, when its weighing on your heart, the window of opportunity is open, just do it, even if you feel uneasy about doing it! Do it with love and a prayer, and you will not go wrong, even if it seems to go badly. WHAT A WONDERFUL FESTIVAL!!! We praise and thank you, Lord, for the glorious day and for so many good people volunteers, benefactors, patrons who made it so festive and enjoyable. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU ALL!! And GOD BLESS YOU! Watch the bulletin for a Festival Financial Report. Read Fr. John s Homily at under the Parish Life tab.
