5 FROM THE PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE 13 th Sunday in Ordinary Time: This weekend we hear in the Lord s Day Gospel about two healing stories in Mark s Gospel. Healing is an important part of Gospel living; we hear continuous testimony in our Sacred Scripture; we know of the miracles that happen around us each day. May we continue to be Christ for others, touching them and giving them hope. Bishop s Scholarship for Excellence: One of our students, Carson Konyecsni, wrote an essay and won a scholarship from the Catholic Education Endowment Trust for the coming year. We are so happy for you Carson! Scholarship for Continuing Education: We are very grateful for a parishioner s anonymous donation of $11,000 to insure $500 in continuing education for our teachers here at SPB. We are blessed that our teachers continue their education, but many of the certificates they are required to obtain they have to pay for on their own and they are expensive. They have a salary lower than our public school teacher friends and this can be a difficulty for many of them with the amount of recertification that needs to occur. Kudos and thanks to a parishioner for recognizing this and assisting the teachers in the coming year, especially with their religious education recertification program. Endowment Fund: This week the Finance Council recommended and placed in our accounts the $75,000 amount for the operation of the school from our Endowment Fund that is around $1.1 million. This roughly supports students for $200 and keeps their tuition that amount lower. Thank you for your support right now of the Endowment Fund, building up this fund for future grants to our school. If you have not received a letter from Mrs. Jansky or me, please let me know and we will send you this important annual support letter to increase the Endowment Fund and invest in the future of our Catholic education. Counseling Services of Fr. Dennis Ruane, SSS: One of our Blessed Sacrament priests has recently got settled in our SSS Community and is now available for counseling services. After being ordained in 1959, Fr. Dennis has served in seminary education for 9 years, 15 years in East Africa, 15 years back to the states for degrees in counseling, especially licensed as an alcohol and drug counselor and a doctorate in addiction therapy. He has been counseling for 25 years and is happy to help here at SPB. Just call to make an appointment with him and he will meet you in the front office counseling room/parlor that we have set up for this. Welcome and thank you Fr. Dennis! Pray for the safety and timely completion of our school office project, those who are traveling on vacation and let us continue to pray for each other! I ll be on vacation the next two weeks and resume my regular bulletin column on Sunday, July 26. Between now and then, however, note all the summer news, for it s never dull here at SPB and as the saying goes, Miss a week, you miss a lot! In Christ our Eucharist, Reverend John Thomas J. Lane, SSS, Class of 1979 Pastor

6 PARISH ACTIVITIES SAINT PASCHAL TRAVELERS Come join the fun on Tuesday, July 28 as we tour Lakeview Cemetery, Terminal Tower Observation Deck, Tower City Center and the Horseshoe Casino (with $15.00 free play). We will be in the Tower City complex so you can visit the casino, shop or see a movie of your choice. You can also eat lunch at the casino or at a restaurant in Tower City. Sign up and pay at the parish office. PASTORAL COUNCIL CORNER Many of us on Pastoral Council won t admit it, but the real reason we serve is to be able to go to the annual picnic and Christmas dinner hosted by Donna and Don Pirc. Food is a great incentive. We gathered on June 15th, 2015 to eat, enjoy fellowship and to share our thoughts over the year and to look ahead. Members were heartened by the impact of the Strategic Plan. Members took notice of the ways everyone communicated with each other and members were grateful to have the experience of working for the people of Saint Paschal Baylon. What a wonderful ministry! And so, we look ahead to the continuous implementation of the Strategic Plan; we look ahead to help enrich the lives of our faith community and to reach out to those in need. We say 'Goodbye' to Samantha Rufo who is going off to college and to Keith Kerver whose term is ending. He gets to spend his time with family and helping our parish in other ministries. We thank them both for their time and their voices at the table. We welcome the newest member of Council, John Mugnano who will be signing on beginning in August. We continue to seek out those who can contribute their voices to this ministry. Please talk to Fr. Lane or any member of Council or myself if interested. 8 PARISH ACTIVITIES continued CLOWN AND HELPING HANDS MINISTRY I have been asked by some people about the ministry of the Clown and Helping Hands. Just to answer those who asked this past week, not only do we do the regular Wednesday Knight Riders run, which is started in the afternoon by three generous cooks who come every week to cook a very good hot meal. Then we have other volunteers who prepare the van, those who travel into the city to seek out the homeless. On Thursday there is another group of volunteers who separate the clothing and prepare the van for the Saturday run. This past Saturday we went to St. Vitus to feed the needy and homeless, around 190 people. That same morning a group of women cooked over 200 chickens to go to a church. That afternoon a group of our volunteers loaded food and clothing and went downtown to take care of the needy. The Clown Ministry went to entertain that night in Mayfield at the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. I hope that gives you an answer about how generous our people are with their time and talents. This parish has been blessed like no other parish in having so many people who give so much of their time, love and concern. We can only do the work of this ministry because of the great generosity of this parish. Truly when Pope Francis said those who reach out to those in need are truly People of Eucharistic tenderness, he was talking about parishes like St. Paschal. God is good all the time, all the time God is good. God bless you all and thank you! Deacon Joe PS There is an inner-city group that is looking for used bicycles, for children ages They want to form a bicycle club to keep the children busy. For more information or to schedule an interview, please call the Pastoral Care Office at MARRYING A NON-CHRISTIAN By Paul Turner A Catholic may marry a non-christian if the proper approvals have been given. Even a catechumen may marry a non-christian in a Catholic ceremony. The liturgy is simplified out of respect for the partner who is not a follower of Christ and for that person's family and friends. The priest or deacon who presides goes to the place where the couple are standing and greets them kindly. Then all go to the seats prepared for them. This need not resemble a procession, though it may. The presider begins without the sign of the cross or the greeting ("The Lord be with you") but simply welcomes everyone, announces that God is love, and invites the couple to listen to the word of God and pray humbly. All of this may be omitted. The entire liturgy may simply begin with readings from Scripture. The Liturgy of the Word is the same as at a wedding between Christians, but the number of readings is reduced to two or even one. The celebration of marriage is also the same as at other weddings, though the presider's introduction avoids any reference to sacraments. This wedding is valid but is not a sacrament, because at least one party is unbaptized. When the couple exchanges rings, they may say the usual words that include the sign of the cross, or they may keep silent, or the Catholic party alone may speak. The universal prayer (prayer of the faithful) takes place, and then the presider invites those who are Christian to pray the Lord's Prayer. The nuptial blessing follows, but it may be omitted and replaced with a simple prayer asking God to preserve this couple's union. The presider blesses the people, and all may sing a hymn.

11 PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY The Prayer Shawl Ministry combines the love of knitting and crocheting with compassion for those in need of comfort and healing. The shawl maker begins with prayers for the recipient and continues the intentions throughout the making of the shawl, ending with a final blessing when the shawl is completed. Knitters and crocheters are invited to join this prayerful ministry. Shawl makers meet once a month (on the third Thursday) or can be involved at home. Our ministry has shawls available now for parishioners who would like to request one for family or friends. Request forms are available at the parish office. You will be contacted to come to SPB to choose a shawl. Each shawl is presented with a prayer tag attached. There is no charge for the shawls as it is the mission of the Prayer Shawl Ministry to provide prayerful comfort and remembrance to those in need. Contact Kay at or Patty at with any questions.
