3 CLOWN/HELPING HANDS MINISTRY On Memorial Day, we remember those who have given their life for our country. The Clown and Helping Hands Ministry has been blessed to serve many veterans who are homeless, serving them a meal and providing clothing. To listen to some of these veterans tell of the horrors they have witnessed shows us how we cannot judge them for who they are today. I had a vet tell of how he let his pride stand in the way of apologizing to his mother for a disagreement. When he came to his senses and went to her to tell his mother how sorry he was, she had passed away. The vet said he was haunted for many years by this, but has sought out God s forgiveness. We all make mistakes, including myself, but God is a loving Forgiving God. Our hearts go out to these veterans who have given so much. I have to say that our Knight Riders who encounter these men and women on a weekly basis show them much love, compassion and sometimes forgiveness. If you see a veteran be sure to thank them for their service to our country. Las week at our Spring Fling Festival, I was so taken by the family spirit among our Helping Hands Ministry as they worked together. Our ministry serves the Lord not just as social workers but as social ministers. GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME. ALL THE TIME GOD IS GOOD. STEWARDSHIP We thank you for being part of this Body of Christ and for serving God here with us and out Pastoral Staff, and the hundreds of volunteers who serve daily at SPB. Our First Collection supports our Pastoral Staff, their salaries, benefits and the many activities that occur at SPB. Our Helping Hands Bake Sale netted $2,345! Thanks for your generosity to this important outreach ministry Please note: The project to replace the hammers of the piano will be this week of June We will hear the organ as our primary music instrument for a weekend! ONLINE DONATION PROGRAM We invite you to join the MyEoffering program. We are grateful to everyone who has already signed up for this online donation program. The advantages to you with our new MyEoffering program are the option to use credit cards to make donations and all the second collections can receive money through your online donations. The link for enrolling in the donation program is available through the parish website, Look on the church side of the website for the icon that is printed with this article. That will take you to the MyEoffering website. PROVIDE A MEANINGFUL LEGACY GIFT Consider naming St. Paschal Baylon Parish as the beneficiary of your whole life insurance policy, IRA, 401(k) plan or another employee benefit plan. Insurance policy premium payments are considered a charitable gift and can potentially provide a tax deduction. Call the Advancement Office at ext. 112 to discuss various types of whole life insurance policies that can support your parish community and school.

I want to sincerely thank our Core Team which made it all possible; Barb DiTurno, Jim Bartel, Diana Mitchell, Karen & Don DiLillo, Bob Horvath, Michelle Mazza, Don LoPresti, Mike Majernik, John Margevicius, Kris Martinson, Kathy Pohlhammer, Greg Sutyak and last but not least, the Leader of the Pack Fr. J.T. Lane, SSS. We began meeting last September to put all of the pieces in place to make this year s Festival a success. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge and thank all of our volunteers, sponsors, raffle supporters and Festival attendees who celebrated with us. The Festival financials will be available shortly once all the bills are in. We may meet and possibly beat last year s totals in spite of the weather not cooperating on 2 festival days. Looking ahead, it is T minus 347 days till the start of the 2018 Festival, May 17 th 20 th. We want to continue to improve and grow each year. We need your help in evaluating, Festival length, Festival layout, entertainment, food menu, food vendors, raffles, casino, etc. Your comments on the following questions will be greatly appreciated and help us with our improvement goals. What did you like about the Festival? Suggested improvements? Are we adequately addressing the needs of the different age groups? Adequate entertainment options? Food offerings including outside vendors? Would you be willing to work on the core committee? Any other applicable comments. Please your comments to Bob Mastrangelo at bgmastrangelo@gmail.com. In closing, Nadia Geddit, from NPR s Car Talk, contacted me about my lame attempt at humor in the weekly updates. I promise improvement next year.

5 FROM THE PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE Due to the Memorial Day holiday schedule, production of this bulletin and column was May 22. Pentecost: Our annual remembrance of the gift of the Holy Spirit with the first apostles and with us in our own times is a wonderful chance for us to praise this aspect of the Trinity and remember the life we all share in God. The Holy Spirit continues to be alive and active especially in our lives when we trust God and allow that Spirit to motivate our lives and help us share our talents and gifts. This aspect of our faith life is not shared enough. We allow our fears, doubts or religious fervor to be held hostage by a combination of elements. We worry about being a holy roller or televangelist personality that will turn off people. God just wants us to be us! Be yourself and share the gifts of the Holy Spirit talk about what you do to live your life in faith, in God. It s natural to share a conversation about so many things; share your experiences of church - worship, ministry and service that you do, to be a faithful steward of our God. The Joy of Spring Fling: We are still on the parish festival high! I keep meeting people who stop me either at the parish or in our community, thanking me for the great event and how much they enjoyed the food, music and fellowship. It is great being the first parish festival in the diocese a chance for everyone to come out and enjoy themselves. Even more important, it s so great that we bring neighbors and friends to join in the festivities. I am so grateful to the many volunteers who help promote this event --- especially the behind the scenes folks who work in the kitchen and the maintenance. A complete report about the festival is coming. I am grateful to all who purchased raffle tickets (it was great to know everyone who won!), sponsored the event and attended. We are starting our work for the 9 th Spring Fling, next May 17 20, 2018 in honor of our patron saint, Paschal Baylon. Community at Prayer Needs are Strong! How about being part of this great ministry here at church and praying in the Holy Spirit? Here are our crucial hours where no one signs up and are needed: Monday: 2:00 p.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday: 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Should we continue Tuesdays? Wednesday: 3:00-4:00 p.m. Thursday: 10:00-11:00 a.m. I know many are away at times please let us know through the buddy system or with Dick Kramer, the leader of C@P: rkram@aol.com Altar Server Training in August: We had our First Communion recently and that s always the first requirement for Altar Serving. The second is being able to carry the candles. We will try an afternoon altar serving camp on Tuesday, August 15, after the holy day Mass at 1:15 p.m. in church. Training will conclude at 4:00 p.m. (I welcome senior servers to be present to help in the training times in small groups in and outside of the church. All new 3 rd graders and up (yes, even high school and adults) are welcome to join in this ministry and training. The first steps are to watch the training videos, online at our website.

6 Ramadan Dinner: Our friends with the Turkish American Community would like to continue a tradition that is part of the faith, sharing a meal with those not part of their faith or mosque. This year, they will bring all the food and share a meal with us on Monday, June 12 at 8:30 p.m. The reason for the later hour is due to the setting of the sun. Please come and share fellowship in the Eymard Room Remembering Those Who Serve in the Military: As we prepare for the 4 th of July in a month, we wish to remind you that we like to know of parishioners who are serving in the military so that we may have their picture, display it in the Fickel Narthex and pray for the family. Please turn in these items to Kathy Pohlhammer, Communication Director or Fr. John. Thanks for the prayers you are offering for the SSS General Chapter the international leadership meeting for our order being held in Mundelein, IL. Let us continue to pray for each other. In Christ our Eucharist, Reverend John Thomas Lane, SSS, 79 Pastor PARISH NEWS July 11 12:15 p.m. Mass Tuesday Returns! After a consultation with the Liturgy Commission and the Quarterly (our regular leaders meeting), we are updating and creating a more consistent Weekday Mass schedule. There will be no more 6:30 a.m. Mass on Tuesday. Instead, we will have Mass Monday through Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. With the 4 th of July holiday, the updated weekday schedule returns Monday, July 10 with July 11 having a 12:15 Mass on Tuesdays again. Flags & Our Scouts: As usual, around Flag Day, June 14, our scouts take old flags and properly retire them for us. During this month, please bring your old flags to the ushers/narthexes and we will have our scouts take care of them. Preparing for the Body & Blood of Christ: Each parish organization has a member process with a banner in the annual Body & Blood of Christ Procession, telling the world, or at least our neighborhood, that the Real Presence of Christ is in our midst and ministries. Please see Vince or Labeeb in our maintenance department to acquire your organization banner and refresh it. We will use them again Sunday, June 18 at the Noon Mass. We are so blessed to have a guest preacher that entire weekend, Blessed Sacrament Father George Dunne. Please also note the following schedule: 1:30 p.m. 3:00 p.m. Silent Prayer with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament 3:00 p.m. Talk with Fr. Roger Bourgeois, SSS during exposition 4:00 p.m. Talk with Fr. Paul Bernier, SSS during exposition 4:45 p.m. Evening Prayer and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament From our Respect LIFE Committee: Baby Bottles for Birthright: For the 3 rd year in a row, Linda & Jim Peters lead us in a special campaign for Birthright. Please take a baby bottle, save your change, and on Father s Day bring the filled baby bottle back to church. This baby bottle campaign is the only fundraiser carried out by Birthright. The East 185 office (there are two others) has several SPB parishioners who are volunteering to support moms and their babies those who have chosen to give life! Thanks for beginning to save your change for this volunteer-driven organization.
