Who doesn t enjoy an ice cream cone or popsicle on a hot day? The homeless are not so fortunate. The summer weather brings special challenges to the homeless and those in need. For example, on sultry summer days when the temperature is climbing high and there is no escape from the heat, there is a risk of hyperthermia or heat stroke. Unfortunately, many of those on the street suffer from different mental challenges. The heat can affect the way that various medications react with the human body. Staying hydrated during the heat is difficult for those on the street. Dehydration during the summer is actually a bigger cause of death than exposure to the cold in the winter. The homeless are often on their feet all day long, that can lead to foot problems, which can be avoided by wearing dry shoes and socks. Of course, the mosquitoes, flies and other nuisance insects can cause some health issues. So, what can we do? Number 1, please continue to pray for our sisters and brothers who are homeless and/or in need. Donations of any kind are always appreciated. In the summer, canned food, water bottles, t-shirts (especially sizes large and extra-large), summer hats and visors, socks, sunscreen, bug spray, and flashlights are greatly needed. With your support, our Helping Hands Ministry is always there to serve those in need. Many, many thanks for helping to reach out to God s less fortunate. GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME. ALL THE TIME GOD IS GOOD. ENDOWMENT FUND We appreciate the many who continue to invest in our award-winning school, insuring a strong endowment fund for the future of the school. Each year, whether we have a profit or not, we use $60,000 of the funds to support the operating costs of the school. We are grateful to the following that have showed their support this year: Mary Jane Iacco Marianne Balluh Joseph and Kathleen Sichko Mary and Richard Dilisi Edward B. Niles Jerry and Kathy Kazimir Louisa Hennessey Ed Noar Larry and Judy Strah Nicholas and Ruth Pellecchia Lawrence and Barbara Mlynek Richard and Suzanne Favazzo

4 YOUTH MINISTRY "For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control. 5 FROM THE PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE 15 th Sunday in Ordinary Time: If I were a betting man, I would play the number 15 today! Yet, our Gospel and scripture readings are not about ourselves, but caring for others and being on mission to fulfill the works of the LORD. In Mark s Gospel, Jesus simply calls forth The Twelve and commands them to be clear and unencumbered on the journey. Don t we sometimes get mixed up and worried over nothing? We are still called today to bring peace, comfort, heal and cure. We can do this! Christ is there leading us onward! Part-time Weekend Maintenance: We are still looking for someone 18 or older to put in 10 hours over the weekend to assist with our many set ups, clean ups and more that occur at our busy parish. Please contact our Maintenance Supervisor, Jon, to apply: jondetzel@yahoo.com Revised Name for a Parish Ministry: Julie Parrotta and Angie Perrine have led our MOMS Group over the years. We are grateful to our new team of leaders, Katie Babic and Emily Orlando who continue to organize wonderful activities for our young ones and parents. To better reflect this reality, the leaders proposed a name change and the Pastoral Staff and Pastoral Council, following the protocol of the parish approved the new name change: SPB Young Families Group ministry. This will also better serve our pastoral plan. In Touch With Daily Parish Activities: I m so thankful to most of our parishioners who keep faithful to know what is going on in the parish by faithfully reading the bulletin every week and always mailing in envelopes! For those who want another type of info, like us on Facebook or sign up for Twitter and see our almost daily pictures and highlights of our parish s life. Spring Fling X: The last Sunday of June bulletin had the financial report sharing the news of the great success of Spring Fling 9. We are already to starting to plan for 2019 with the hope for elephant ears/fried dough, hamburgers and hot dogs returning. Want to help organize these very time consuming opportunities? Join with me in flipping burgers! Sign up through our chair, Bob Mastrangelo: bgmastrangelo@gmail.com Evangelization Committee: I had a few folks express an interest in being part of an Evangelization Committee. In the fall, we will look more into organizing something. In the meantime, talking about the parish with others, inviting others to join you here, or bringing folks, seeing our new signage, being on social media or sharing our bulletins with others are the great ways we DO evangelize. Keep on sharing the great news of our parish and we will continue to grow our parish by your nice, kind ways of encouraging others to join in the parish s life and be the church. Liturgy of the Hours: Morning Prayer: Part of our pastoral plan was to have some liturgical catechesis from time to time. Today and next week, I d

6 like to share a little bit about the prayer of the church, the Liturgy of the Hours. After the Second Vatican Council ( ) [V2], the church totally revived the liturgy and called for more active participation from the laity. The second most important style or type of ritual prayer (after the Eucharist or Mass) had always been the Divine Office but now after V2 called the Liturgy of the Hours. These liturgies highlight the times of the day that our sacred. Jesus, being a good Jew, would participate in praying and praising God. And we Christians would keep that model of living, with the two hinges of the day, namely Morning and Evening Prayer, being the times when the community would gather together to pray. Here s the outline of the structure for Morning Prayer: Invitatory (getting us into the prayers, recalling scripture and here with a religious community, sharing a bit of our necrology, our Rule of Life and calling about the saints to guide our day) Hymn Psalms & Canticle (two psalms are proclaimed, in choir style, that is reciting or singing on two sides of the chapel. Again, because Jesus proclaimed the psalms, we continue this tradition today, with the psalms reminding us of the joy of a new day) Reading from the Word of God Responsory (a chance for us to respond to God s word) Canticle of Zechariah (from the praise of Zechariah when his mouth was freed to speak again and share the glory of the new day that is rising, as we, like John the Baptist, proclaim and witness to Christ Intercessions (some are prepared, and we add our own for the needs of our world and family) The LORD s Prayer Closing Prayer Dismissal This prayer lasts about minutes; and why is it important? Liturgical prayer is an important rhythm in our life for worshiping God, for acknowledging our needs and starting our day with a pledge and witness to faithfully serve God. As I ve said too many, who have the time, Try it, you might like it! For those who are not able to be present in the church, we know you pray in your car, home or wherever. We are in communion in our prayer as we grow in holiness. Thankfully the church offers this opportunity. Saint Ann Triduum: Another opportunity for growing in holiness is our annual Saint Ann Triduum, highlighting our grandparents in faith and in life who witness to Christ even today. The schedule appears elsewhere in the bulletin, so please join us for the sacraments and sacramentals that deepen our life and growth in the LORD and community. NE Ohio Best Place to Work: Christ is leading our parish onward too! While we may have just received this auspicious award from The Plain Dealer & Cleveland.com, we know that we could be better and want to always make sure that we are building the kingdom of God. This is why our theme tagline for the year ahead is Forward in Faith, Hope & Love. We will use this in our education, formation and as part of our growing in our stewardship. We are grateful for the honor of being such a great parish

7 let us continue to work to keep making it a great place. Let us continue to pray for each other! In Christ our Eucharist, Reverend John Thomas Lane, SSS 8 th Pastor P.S. Next weekend, you are able to sign up for a liturgical ministry again, as communion minister or usher, by texting me! Ask me for more details! STEWARDSHIP We are a stewardship parish: we recognize that as God s stewards, we cannot help but give thanks to God for our many blessings and gifts. We demonstrate this by sharing our time, talent and treasure to build up God s reign. We do this because there are a lot of joys and blessings, expenses and duties for living and running a parish family. Collection for June 30 and July 1: $19, Collection for July 7 and 8: $17, Catholic Charities Appeal: Each year we are asked to support the many ministries of the Diocese of Cleveland, especially its outreach ministries. Thanks for helping our parish make our goal of $153,000. You are doing it for me when you make your pledge, payment and support the 400,000 people we serve in Northeast Ohio. Donors from our parish: 366 (19% of the parishioners) Pledged amount: $146, Paid: $101, (69% fulfillment) Goal set by diocese: $152, (96% percent to goal) Bills we paid this week: Fixing the handicap church door $75.00 Garage internet service (monthly) $ Sewer district (monthly) $ Tree service $1, Unemployment compensation $1, Workers compensation $7, Forward in Faith, Hope & Love: those parishioners who have already filled out the commitment card to share their prayer-filled tithing increase for our parish s life next year edify me. Thank you for sharing your time, talent and treasure to build up our parish s life. We ask all parishioners to please fill out a card, even if you are keeping your tithing about the same for next year. This commitment is an important witness! We are grateful for those who mail or drop off their envelope or are now doing online giving to assist us with our regular financial needs.
