CATHOLICS RETURNING HOME SERIES: Begins Tuesday, October 14, 7:30 p.m. in the Parlor (Rectory Offices park in horseshoe lot on Wilson Mills). Invite those who you feel might benefit from this opportunity to renew their faith or heal in a non-judging environment that is safe, welcoming and loving. OKTOBERFEST: Saturday, October 18 TRUNK OR TREAT: Sunday, October 26 WEEKDAY MASS NOTES Due to the priests schedule in the Hillcrest area, there will be only one Mass October 1-10, but the regular Mass times on October 6 & 7. The national liturgy convention is being held in Chicago and the Diocese of Cleveland Priests convocation during these times. Thank you for understanding. If you would like to change your Mass intention or reschedule during this time, please let us know. At these meetings, the priests will also be praying for us and the intentions that are offered here. The SSS will be away at their "chapter" meeting, planning and voting for their future. There will be only one weekday Mass the week of November 10-14, at 9 a.m. and visiting priests on Sunday, November 9. As they prepare for their chapter, let us pray, with the Holy Spirit, for their discernment process.

Burke, Frank Mahne HELPING HANDS AND CLOWN MINISTRIES I am writing to clarify my position as a Deacon. First of all I am a religious of the Blessed Sacrament Oder which ministers here at Saint Paschal Baylon. I was a brother for 20 years and my provincial asked me to consider becoming a permanent deacon since our order is made up of priests, deacons and brothers. After four years of studying I became the first religious brother to become a permanent deacon within the United States. Since my ordination I have been in New York City, Houston, TX, and now here at St. Paschal Baylon for almost 16 years. Thank God for allowing me to baptize, officiate at weddings and other religious duties as a permanent deacon. I have been blessed here at St. Paschal Baylon for having so many generous and loving people that help support our Helping Hands and Clown Ministry. Speaking of our ministry, we could use more unexpired canned goods and peanut butter since we have been serving more people. 4 YOUTH MINISTRY "Your grace abounds in deepest waters, Your sovereign hand will be my guide, where feet may fail and fear surrounds me... You've never failed, and You won't start now." -Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) by Hillsong United Last week s Gospel reading is one of my favorite stories of Peter. How often do we find ourselves calling out to Jesus, asking Him for help? We get out of the boat, focus on Christ, and we are walking on water! Then our focus is thrown off. We begin to look around, take our eyes off of Jesus, distracted by the winds all around us and we begin to sink. Had we just kept our eyes on Him, we wouldn't have fear, stress, or anxiety! I pray we each keep our focus on the Lord as we begin this new school year and this new chapter in Youth Ministry! Thank you to the seven teens that helped with Children s Games at the Parish Picnic last Sunday. I appreciate your time and effort. We hope everyone had fun at our picnic! *** Upcoming Youth Group Events *** August 31st ~ Meetings begin: First official meeting for the new school year! Grades 6-8: will meet at 5:30, everyone will attend The Teen Mass at 7:00, and Grades 9-12: will meet from 8:00-9:30. No need to RSVP! Just show up when you can! FAITH AND VALUES APPEAL FOR EDUCATION As summer vacations come to a close, we look forward to the beginning of another school year in our Catholic Schools across the diocese. A special parish appeal, the Faith and Values Appeal for Education, will be held next weekend (Aug. 24) to provide tuition support for needy students and their families right here in our diocese. Please be generous in your support of the Catholic school students. Envelopes for this special appeal are included with your parish envelopes.

5 FROM THE PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE 20 th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: Today we hear again of the great cry of the Canaanite woman in the Gospel and her extraordinary faith. She and Jesus have an incredible dialog that deepens the perspective of the Lord. Our prayer life is constantly being challenged, yet we have a wonderful gift, a relationship with the Lord that calls us to pray for healing. We come to this holy house of prayer to acknowledge our faith, deepen our love and praise of God. We will never be turned away! PATIO PARTY FOR LYNDHURST/RIDGEBURY NEIGHBORS: We have another family that wants to host a gathering, a block party at her backyard patio! SPECIAL PRAYER FOR PEACE & BLESSED SCHOOL YEAR: Church leaders around the world, but especially Pope Francis and the Patriarch of Iraq Louis Rafael are calling for a special day of peace this day, August 17. Here is a special prayer for all of us to say: PATRIARCH SAKO S PRAYER FOR PEACE IN IRAQ Lord, The plight of our country is deep and the suffering of Christians is severe and frightening. Therefore, we ask you Lord to spare our lives, and to grant us patience, and courage to continue our witness of Christian values with trust and hope. Lord, peace is the foundation of life: Grant us the peace and stability that will enable us to live with each other without fear and anxiety, and with dignity and joy. As our students go back to school this week, and we keep them in prayer, let us also make a special effort to fast for peace. Let us remember that this Friday and every Friday are still voluntary days of fasting for special causes. Perhaps this week we could fast for peace. PARISH PICNIC THANKS: Thank God for the beautiful weather, the great turn out and those who brought food to share! We especially appreciate all the hard work of the Gilmour Council of the Knights of Columbus, George Zagar, Deacon Joe, the Parrottas, Polhammers and Andersons for their assistance with putting the Mass together. 6 FINANCE REPORT In a few weeks (for the 61 st anniversary of the parish) a finance report will be mailed to your home, sharing the past fiscal year budget and the projected budget for this current fiscal year. Your constant generosity and tithing support the many ministries and financial commitments of the parish s life, especially the school. Thank you for your commitment to our parish family and community. This is on the largest boat of Cleveland and is a relaxing time with great views of our great downtown. After looking into it, the bus, meal and tip included it is $50, leaving from SPB on a bus at 10:15, for lunch at 11, cruising from 12 Noon - 2 p.m. We would return to SPB around 3:15 p.m. (after touring more, on the bus) other sites along the way back. PARISH ACTIVITIES COMMUNITY AT PRAYER- ADORATION All of the Sacraments give grace, but the Most Blessed Sacrament contains the "AUTHOR OF ALL GRACE, JESUS CHRIST!" (Fr. John Hardon) We all need grace to give us strength to do the Will of God. Just sitting in the Presence of the Lord in Adoration gives grace to us. Come meet the Author of all Grace. Join us for our monthly game night at St. Pascal's Life Center. This is one of our best attended events and is good for old and new members. UNIFORM EXCHANGE PROGRAM As a PTO service to the SPB Community, the uniform exchange sale will be set up in the vestibule of the Family Life Center from August 1st through August 23rd. This is a great way to make a little extra money and get uniform items for a great price! This program is not a money maker for the PTO. It allows our families to "pay it forward' and support the SPB community in another way. 8 EDUCATION continued PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION (PSR) NEWS: PSR Registration: If you haven t yet gotten a chance to register for PSR, registration forms are available in the parish office or online at psr.saintpaschal.com. Tuition rates for this year are $95 for 1 child, $170 for 2 children, and $255 for 3 or more children. Scholarships are available. Additionally, our registration form this year also serves as the emergency medical form as well as the media release form for your convenience. Special note: Two years of sacramental preparation is required. If you have a child entering 1 st grade or 7 th grade and are interested in them receiving their sacraments in 2 nd and 8 th grades the following year, please make sure to enroll them in PSR for this coming school year. Help Needed: We are in need of a volunteer to be a 4 th grade classroom aide. We are also in need of volunteers to be classroom aides in grades 6-8. If you are available Monday evenings from 6:30-8pm starting in September, please contact George and Anna Peko at ext ST. PASCHAL BAYLON CATHOLIC SCHOOL NEWS School hasn t officially started but we already have some great news concerning some of our 4th and 5th grade students. Mrs. Perrine is happy to announce that seven Saint Paschal Baylon students were accepted into the Ohio All State Children's Chorus and will sing on October 18th at Capitol University. The students are Lauren Barnes (Gr. 5), Sophia Boes (Gr. 4), Maggie Bonfiglio (Gr. 4), James Ciofani (Gr. 5), Erin Dickens (Gr. 5), Leann Dulzer (Gr. 5), and Eleanor Fleming (Gr. 4). What an honor for these Green Knights! Thank you, Mrs. Perrine, for preparing our students for this wonderful experience. Here are some great things happening this week: Our annual Meet Your Teacher night for Grades K - 8 takes place on Tuesday, August 19th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Drop in any time between those hours. Class lists, bus lists, gym clothes, yearbooks, and other supplies will be available that evening. Our first day of school for Grades 1-8 is Thursday, August 21. Please remember that our starting time has been moved up 10 minutes this year. Students MUST arrive by 8:05 to be considered on time. Our day begins at 8:10 am. Our dismissal time has NOT changed. 9 AROUND THE DIOCESE BENEFIT FOR HOLY ROSARY CHURCH Join the St. Anthony Women s Society for a Clambake on September 14, 2014 from 12-4 pm in the Holy Rosary Church Hall. Tickets are $ A WALK TO REMEMBER The Catholic Cemeteries Association invites you to attend our 2 nd Annual Walk to Remember, Sunday, September 28th, 2:00 4:00 pm. A Walk to Remember is an event to ensure that bereaved families do not walk their journey alone by focusing on fellowship, bereavement care resources and prayerful support for those touched by all types of loss. The Walk to Remember will take place at: All Souls Cemetery, Chardon, All Saints Cemetery in Northfield, Holy Cross Cemetery, Brook Park, Calvary Cemetery, Lorain and Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron. The Walk to Remember includes a 1-mile walking Rosary followed by a candle lighting service. For those who cannot walk the mile the Rosary will be recited in the Mausoleum. BIRTHRIGHT NEEDS A FEW GOOD VOLUNTEERS: Birthright is a pregnancy service that helps women and their babies.
