6 LIFE IN THE EUCHARIST PROGRAM & RETREAT DAY FROM THE PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time: We continue another week in John s Gospel, chapter 6 and the discourse on the Eucharist. Our faith depends on eating and drinking with the LORD and of the LORD. We know we are fed at the Table of the Eucharist and that Christ nourishes us for the journey of life. We pray in a special way for our teachers and students who begin another school year this week that they will rely on the faith and the nourishment of the Eucharist to guide their learning journey. Music and Progressive Solemnity: Now to another Pastoral Plan Bulletin Catechetical Moment, about music and the Mass; first an explanation or two: In one of our liturgical documents, the General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours, [GILH] paragraph 273, a principle of progressive solemnity is outlined to form our liturgical laws for music in services. This concept means we have various degrees of feasts and depending on the celebration and the occasion of specialness, we do more for these occasions in the way of accentuating the rank of a liturgical day. You may notice here that we use incense for the high holy seasons (Advent, Christmas Time, Lent, Easter Time and special solemnities) and not at every Sunday Mass like on the EWTN TV Masses or at cathedrals or the Vatican. Some may remember that there were at one time high Masses and low Masses, Masses with music and incense, and ones without them. Part of the reason for this was that Mass had to be short due to the large crowds coming and going, the Eucharistic fast (for being were starving and needed to get back to work) and other reasons that are off topic. It is hard to believe how loads of people were moved in and out of church like a factory, assembly line getting people in and out in sometimes a half hour. Things changed a bit after Vatican 2 ( ) but some the attitudes and expectations did not. Church practice (for we received a new Order for Mass in 1970) returned to making sure that every Mass was special and not just routine or a race to get people in and out. The way Mass was celebrated, with music, proper proclamation of the scripture, use of time and other elements were returned. Two important elements returned that I m sure you would miss if we cut down the Mass, : the petitions (now called the Universal Prayers) and the Sign of Peace. Also Pope Paul VI dropped the high and low Mass terms and made all Sunday Masses high and a new ranking of celebrations created. You may notice on EWTN or broadcasts of the Vatican Masses how they sing everything and do every rubric (such as incense) because they have time and people and wish to accentuate the solemnest of the Eucharist. Our Liturgical Commission at SPB and the SSS tend to follow the GILH 273 principle of progressive solemnity with the ranking determining how much we will sing or not sing for Mass or other liturgies.

7 FROM THE PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE continued Here is the list of the ranking of church days, the most important to the lower rank: Solemnity Sundays, Triduum, Easter, Christmas, Assumption, patron saints of parishes (like Saints Paschal & Eymard) etc. Feast Apostles, early martyrs like Lawrence Memorials Saints Optional Memorials Saints that are not as well known universally, but may be celebrated at the choice of the presider Ordinary Time/weekdays On the liturgical calendars the funeral homes provide to us each year, you may notice the special colors or typeface to indicate the uniqueness of each day. Many priests, including the SSS, have always indicated the specialness of a day, by the amount of singing we do. Solemnities are meant to have everything sung as noted in the Roman Missal. Not every priest has that gift to sing so they use their other gifts for the purpose of glorifying God in other ways other than during the Mass or delegate musicians to assist in the specialness of a service, either Mass, Liturgy of the Hours, exposition, etc. We pride ourselves at SPB that we have a blessed music bank of talent. Furthermore, I sing a part of the Eucharistic Prayer during the high holy seasons of the year, and not each week, to assist our liturgical calendar, demonstrate the importance of certain days or seasons, and use my gifts to glorify God. We do this together by our participation our presence each week when we gather for the great thanksgiving. Thanks for joining in this praise and worship to God together as the Body of Christ. Sunday 8:00 a.m. Mass: Just a note of thanks to Roberta Modica for her recruitment of Karla and Dick Kramer to sing together in a Trinity of Music for the 8:00 a.m. Mass on Sundays. We appreciate them sharing their gifts, building on the footsteps and legacy of the Kramer musical legacy here at SPB. If you haven t been to the 8:00 a.m. Mass in a while, please enjoy their wonderful harmonies and song that help us together praise God. Thanks 8 a.m. Music Team!! Let us continue to pray for each other! In Christ our Eucharist, Reverend John Thomas J. Lane, SSS, Class of 1979 Pastor STEWARDSHIP REPORT Have you thought of leaving a legacy, especially for our faith, church and school? What an amazing day we had. From hearing Matt Maher, Building 429, MercyMe, to attending the Youth Rally with outdoor Eucharistic Adoration, volunteering, hanging out, eating, and celebrating Mass with 40,000 people, it was a truly blessed day. GET INTO THE BOAT! Remember playing that game, Follow the Leader? What trust we put in our friends whom we were required to imitate in a variety of antics. We are all grown up now and yet, that s exactly what Jesus asked. And He said to them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. (Matthew 19). It is time to get into the boat, put out to sea and do what He asks. We can learn from Pope Francis. How does he lead? And how does he follow? Prior to serving at the Jesuit Retreat House Rick Krivanka served as director of the Pastoral Planning Office for the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland for more than 32 years. In retreats and workshops, Rick has led people to understand their own leadership roles in the Church, building upon the gift of Ignatian spirituality. At this Eymard Gathering, Rick will help us all to reflect and discern our next move as we urge ourselves to get into that boat with Jesus. FOR THIS EYMARD GATHERING ALL ATTENDEES ARE ASKED TO BRING SALADS, SIDES OR MAIN DISHES, ENOUGH TO SERVE 6 TO 8.
