Each year the Church renews its understanding of itself and its world in the process, the story, of the Christian Year. Above all, in Holy Week and Easter, it takes us inexorably through a series of changing relationships, shifting perspectives, that cannot be rushed: it leads us through the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus, which is the centre and wellspring of what we are. We can t do this with selected highlights, saving time; this is a contemplation, a feeding, that requires our flesh and blood, our patience, our passion. Music has been offered in worship since Biblical times; this offering of the Faure Requiem by the choir during this liturgy for Good Friday is of vital importance, for music has the ability to transcend words; it can inspire, excite, soothe, and heal; it can unite people of different backgrounds and nationalities, it can speak to people of all faiths and of none, and it can point the way to God. May this wonderful masterpiece be such an offering. THE TRIDUUM THE GREAT THREE DAYS Meaning of the Triduum Welcome to All Saint s! The orders of service give the shape and texts for our liturgies, but the heart and soul of our worship will come from your participation and from your approach to God. These liturgies are amongst the most profound and moving of all services. If you find yourself connected to deep feeling, deep thought and deep affection, then you have entered into the story, and you are blessed. Let yourself hear the words as if for the first time. Find a part of the story and let it touch you.

6 Maundy Thursday is the day we remember the last supper that Jesus had with his friends. We recall in words and actions that amongst his last acts was to wash his disciples feet, an act of servanthood. We remember the Garden of Gethsemane and ask ourselves, Can we not pray but one hour? We strip the altar area of all cloths and ornaments. And we leave in silence. Good Friday is the day we remember the death of Jesus. All is sparse. The music and readings set the tone. The liturgy is simple, even stark. We are invited to behold the wood of the cross, and to stand before it for a moment. We stand together as a family gathers at the time of death, in sadness, in grief, in community. The Festival of the Resurrection (Easter Vigil and Easter Day) is the journey from darkness to light. As we gather on Easter Morning we recall the women in the gospel story who gathered in the dark before dawn the start of the next day in Jewish reckoning. We light a new fire, tell the stories of our ancestors which are our foundational narrative of God s saving love, sing out the news of the new life in Christ, and celebrate with thanksgiving God s gift of resurrection in Christ. Throughout all of these services may you know, in a new powerful way, the presence of the God who is with us in our suffering and our joy, and who forever and eternally brings new life and hope to the world.
