2 Fourteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time July 8, 2018 Vol. XXXIV, No. 27 Obstacles The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today's scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are "[h]ard of face and obstinate of heart" (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a "thorn in the flesh" (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that "[he] was amazed at their lack of faith" (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). Antonians Christmas In July Yes, Christmas will be coming early for the clients of the Pregnancy Help Center in Slidell, Safe Harbor, Inc. the Battered Women s Shelter in Mandeville and Free Indeed Home in Covington, a shelter for underage victims of human trafficking, sponsored by the Antonians. Please choose a tag from the Christmas tree set up in the Church, which will identify the needed donations. Donations should be dropped off in the boxes at the church entrance and at the Church Office before July 29. PLEASE DO NOT WRAP THE GIFTS. New CD s On Display Saint John Paul the Great New cd s have been placed in the display at the entrance to the church. Featured this week is the story of Saint John Paul the Great. Discover the five great loves of Pope Saint John Paul II as Jason Evert shares remarkable stories about this saint s life from those who knew him, including bishops, students whom he taught and Swiss Guards who interacted with him daily. Jason presents a wealth of insights about this holy man who promoted devotion to Divine Mercy and Marian consecration, helped defeat Communism in Europe, wrote the Theology of the Body and embraced young people like no other. Offertory Giving Putting the Eucharist into Action What we learn from Christian stewardship is that we have an openness to change and respond, to let ourselves be new persons. As stewards, we recognize that all is gift, all is grace, and all things manifest the mystery of God s presence. Once we come to this conclusion, then we are more fully able to live the rest of our days in gratitude by celebrating and becoming Eucharistic people. Our work of stewardship is ultimately our way of saying thanks to God; our way of putting the Eucharist into action. Financial Report Due to the early deadline for the Fourth of July holiday, the financial information for July 8, 2018, will be published in next weekend s bulletin. Black And Indian Mission Collection Next Sunday s second collection will be the Black and Indian Mission Collection. Your support of this collection provides the presence of missionaries here in African-American, Native American and Alaska Native missions, schools and religious education programs Your partnership places Bibles and catechetical materials in the hands of priest, consecrated women and men and lay leaders in Black Catholic communities. Your sacrifice addresses the need to train catechists, permanent deacons and seminarians for future generations here in many of our neighborhoods and backyards. Thank you for your prayerful support of this collection. Altar Flowers Donation The beautiful flower arrangements adorning the altar this weekend were donated in memory of George Schaefer, Sr., by members of his loving family. Pope Francis Prayer Intention That priests, who experience fatigue and loneliness in their pastoral work, may find help and comfort in their intimacy with the Lord and in their friendship with their brother priests.

The Altar Server s ministry is unique in the Catholic Church. Other than priests and deacons, no one else is allowed to so closely play a part in the preparation of the Holy Eucharist. Your participation as an Altar Server is special. When you serve the priests and deacons, you serve the people of God, and above all, you serve Christ. The qualifications for being an Altar Server are: *Must have made First Holy Communion * Must be in the fourth grade or higher. *Must have a desire to serve reverently If you fit these qualifications, please attend our Altar Server meeting Saturday, July 14, at 9:00 a.m. in the Church to join or get more information. We look forward to seeing you! Living As a Christian Steward TIME Giving of time for Christian stewards includes time spent in prayer and worship, in sharing our love with family and friends, and in volunteering for church and community activities that help others and promote justice. TALENT We share our talents by using the unique gifts God has given us to praise the Lord, spread the Gospel message and help those less fortunate. TREASURE We give our treasure unconditionally, without any expectation of return, in proportion to our giftedness and is an expression of thanksgiving.

4 Sts. Peter and Paul 4 Vol. XXXIV, No. 27 Thank You VBS Volunteers Many thanks to all our generous parishioners who assisted in Vacation Bible School. The success of this summer s program was due to the dedicated and creative leadership of our Coordinator of Religious Education, Mary Kittel, and a multitude of parishioners (Youth Helpers through adult as well as the refreshment committee) who gave so generously of their time and talents. Without them, VBS would not be the powerful instrument of faith that it is. Their enthusiasm, their interaction with the children, and their modeling of a true Christian attitude made Vacation Bible School an important component of the faith formation of these young people. Thank you also to those who donated money and those who brought food and desserts for the Saturday evening celebration of VBS. Remember Jesus rescues. God s blessings upon each of you. Young Adult Ministry Of Slidell Are you a Catholic young adult living in the East St. Tammany region (Slidell, Lacombe, Pearl River and Bogalusa)? Do you want to be part of a community of faith and great friendships with other young adults who share the same values with you? Slidell Catholic Young Adults is for you! It is a great opportunity to just get to know others for dinners, socials, faith formation and services. Feel free to contact Fr. Francis Offia, Parochial Vicar at St. Luke the Evangelist by phone at or FrFrancis@stlukeslidell.org Weakness And Strength The opposite of strong faith may not be weakness, but rather misplacing faith by relying on ourselves, our material possessions or others. When we think we can do things on our own, we leave little room for God in our lives. When we develop a false sense of security rooted in material things, our trust in Jesus is quite shallow. Growing in faith calls us to rely on God s great goodness above all things. When we open our minds and hearts and allow ourselves to be astonished at the love and life found in Jesus Christ, we realize that we do not need to rely on ourselves. Saint Paul teaches us a very important lesson about this in his second letter to the Corinthians, in which we hear, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. Preached Silent Ignatian Retreat Join us at Rosaryville Retreat Center in Ponchatoula for a Women s Ignatian Silent Retreat from August focused on the Ignatian Exercises. Stop and enjoy a weekend of reflection, rediscovery and refreshment. The Spiritual Exercises are a compilation of meditations, prayers and contemplative practices developed by St. Ignatius Loyola to help people deepen their relationship with God. The cost of a double shared room is $325.00, or single private room $ Visit upcoming-events for more details and registration information. Many Who Heard Him Is your faith weak or strong? Most of us have moments in which our answer could simply be Yes! Faith is not a once-and-for-all thing. Our faith ebbs and flows, along with changes in life circumstances, as we mature and grow in relationship with Christ and with one another. Pope Francis speaks to this in The Joy of the Gospel, when he encourages us to be open to an encounter with God s love daily. In these encounters, like the one that the people in the synagogue had with Jesus in today s Gospel, we may be astonished at God s love and are invited to accept it. Weakness in faith is not always the result of some failure on our part. We may simply be at a crossroads, at which we cannot clearly see or understand what comes next. It is such a time that we step out in blind faith with the assurance that God s love awaits us in every moment. 5 Sts. Peter and Paul 5 Vol. XXXIV, No. 27 Treasures From Our Tradition Last week's Treasure mentioned the "Nuns of the Battlefield," religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti- Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and singleminded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the "Nuns of the Battlefield" stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: "They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty." Rev. James Field 120 Martyrs Honored July 9 Today the 120 martyrs honored today died between 1648 and Most of them (eighty-seven) were born in China and were children, parents, catechists or laborers, ranging from nine years of age to seventy-two. This group included four Chinese priests. The thirty-three foreign-born martyrs were mostly priests or women religious, especially from the Order of Preachers (including St. Francis Capillas January 15, 1648, protomartyr of China), the Paris Foreign Mission Society, the Friars Minor, Jesuits, Salesians and Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. Augustine Zhao Rong was a Chinese soldier who accompanied the prisoner Bishop John Gabriel Taurin Dufresse (Paris Foreign Mission Society) to his baptism and not long after was ordained a diocesan priest. He was martyred in Beatified in groups at various times, 120 martyrs were canonized October 1, 2000, by Pope John II. St. Benedict, Abbot July 11 Saddened by the immoral state of society, St. Benedict of Nursia left to live as a hermit at Subiaco. In time, more and more men were attracted to his charismatic personality as well as to his way of life. He eventually moved a group of monks to Monte Cassino, near Naples, where he completed the final version of his rule, now known as the Rule of St. Benedict, on the fundamentals of monastic life, including the day-to-day operation of a monastery. The rule asserts that the primary occupation of the monk is to pray the Divine Office in tandem with a vowed life of stability, obedience and conversion. The whole of the monastic vocation can be summarized in the opening life of his rule, Listen carefully. St. Benedict is considered the father of Western monasticism. St. Kateri Tekakwitha July 14 Though the New York State Thruway runs close by the North American Martyrs' Shrine, traffic's roar never pierces the peace enveloping Auriesville--Ossernon to Native Americans-- in the lovely Mohawk Valley, where Kateri Tekakwitha was born barely ten years after the martyrdom of Isaac Jogues and his Jesuit and lay companions. Daughter of a Christian Algonquin mother and non-christian Mohawk chief, Kateri's parents died in a smallpox epidemic widely blamed on the missionaries. Moreover, many Native Americans had experienced exploitation at the hands of "Christian" traders and trappers, further discrediting the faith Kateri embraced in baptism, then pledged to live even more intensely in vowed virginity. Misunderstanding led to harassment, prompting her move to a Christian village farther north along the Saint Lawrence River. Despite this, Kateri's faith remained undaunted, her selfless charity undiminished. Both before and after her death at twenty-four, this young "Lily of the Mohawks" drew countless converts to Christ by the fragrance of her goodness. Through us, does "the aroma of Christ" (2 Corinthians 2:15), attract others to the beauty of his gospel? Peter Scagnelli

6 Sts. Peter and Paul 6 Vol. XXXIV, No. 27 For Those Who Live Alone I live alone, Dear Lord, stay by my side, In all my daily needs be Thou my guide, Grant me good health, for that indeed I pray, To carry on my work from day to day. Keep pure my mind, my thoughts, my every deed, Let me be kind, unselfish in my neighbor s need. Spare me from fire, from flood, malicious tongues, From thieves, from fear and evil ones. If sickness or an accident befall, Then humble Lord, I pray hear Thou my call. And when I am feeling low or in despair, Lift up my heart and help me in my prayer. I live alone, Dear Lord, yet I have no fear, Because I feel Your presence ever near. Amen. This Day I will never see this day again the seconds or the hours Now is the time to take the time to stop and smell the flowers. Today is the day to give that smile and happiness away That you were saving for a friend some rainy, gloomy day; This day is golden, priceless God made this day for you The deed you do for someone else may just come back to you. So tough a heart, hold a hand; call that lonely friend. Do not postpone the love you have. This day will not come again. Do Not Support Violence Violence is a lie, for it goes against the truth of our faith, the truth of our humanity. Violence destroys what it claims to defend: the dignity, the life, the freedom of human beings. Violence is a crime against humanity, for it destroys the very fabric of society To all of you who are listening I say: Do not believe in violence; do not support violence. It is not the Christian way. It is not the way of the Catholic Church. Believe in peace and forgiveness and love, for they are of Christ. Pope Joh Paul II Life Life is fragile handle with prayer. To Let Go Takes Love To let go does not mean to stop caring, it means I cannot do it for someone else. To let go is not to cut myself off, it is the realization I can not control another. To let go is not to enable, but to allow learning from natural consequences. To let go is to admit powerlessness, which means the outcome is not in my hands. To let go is not to try to change or blame another, it is to make the most of myself. To let go is not to care for, but to care about. To let go is not to fix, but to be supportive. To let go is not to judge, but to allow another to be a human being. To let go is not to be in the middle of arranging all the outcomes but to allow others to affect their own destinies. To let go is not to be protective, it is to permit another to face reality. To let go is not to deny, but to accept. To let go is not to nag, scold, or argue, but instead to search out my own shortcomings and to correct them. To let go is not to adjust everything to my desires but to take each day as it comes, and to cherish myself in it. To let go is not to criticize and regulate anybody but to try to become what I dream I can be. To let go is to not regret the past, but to grow and to live for the future. To let go is to fear less and to love more. Is He Honored? The journey of faith begins at home. Our children watch us with innocent eyes, to see if the faith we proclaim is portrayed in our deeds. Carefully, these little hearts observe to see if we truly believe in this Almighty God they have preached so loudly. And what will we show them? Do we trust Him to provide for our needs? Do we invite Him to participate in our family life? Do we spend time with Him daily? What evidence of our faith can our children see on the six days a week we are not in church? Before another day goes by, ask yourself this vital question: Jesus found He was not honored in His own home is He honored in yours?
