2 Twenty-Eighth Sunday In Ordinary Time October 14, 2018 Words Of Wisdom The spirit of wisdom, as we discover in today's first reading, comes to those who pray for her. Wisdom, like the word of God, carries a message of consolation as well as of great challenge. The Letter to the Hebrews tells us that the word of God, infused with the wisdom of God, is "sharper than any twoedged sword." We cannot shrink from the wisdom of God, or from the word that has the power to penetrate our hearts and minds. Jesus, the living word of God, the embodiment of wisdom, has strong, deeply penetrating words for the rich young man who comes to Him seeking answers to His most profound questions. Just when the young man thought he had done enough to fulfill God's commands, more was asked of him. This is no less true for us. All Souls November 2 A Mass in commemoration of all the faithful departed will be celebrated Friday, November 2, at 8:00 a.m. The envelopes submitted by parishioners listing those they wish remembered in Purgatorial Society Masses throughout the year will be carried to the altar in the processional of the Mass. They will then be placed beside the Tabernacle and remain there until next year. All Souls Day envelopes are available at the entrances to the Church for remembrance of your beloved deceased family members. Envelopes with names need to be returned by Sunday, October 28. Please print the names clearly. You may place the envelopes in the collection basket, drop in the mailbox outside the Office door or return them to the Church Office during regular office hours. Altar Flowers Donation The beautiful flower arrangements adorning the altar were donated in memory of Mavis Conravey on the occasion of her birthday by her loving daughter Nancy Conravey. Pope Francis Prayer Intention That consecrated religious men and women may bestir themselves, and be present among the poor, the marginalized and those who have no voice. Offertory Giving Jesus offers a hard lesson regarding wealth and possessions in today s Gospel. The rich man He encountered could not part with his possessions as a condition to becoming a disciple of Jesus. Would our response be the same as the rich man? Do we place our trust in our money and possessions instead of trusting in God s generosity? Do we seek security in our possessions? Good stewards realize that their possessions must not possess them, lest those possessions block their relationship with the Lord. Last Sunday Oct. 7 Envelopes Loose On Line Giving Total $3, , $5, World Mission Collection The second collection next weekend will be the World Mission Collection. This annual collection is a unique, global effort for the entire Church to provide for the building up of over one thousand local churches in Asia and Africa, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe. Through the work of these churches, and their witness to Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God s love and mercy, His hope and peace. K.C. Spaghetti Dinner October 14 The Annual Spaghetti and Meatball Dinner, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, will be held in the Parish Hall Sunday, October 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Dinners consist of spaghetti, tomato sauce, meatballs, Italian salad and a roll. Price is still only $5.00. Sodas and desserts will be available for purchase. Coffee and iced tea are free. Proceeds will go to the Scholarship Fund for our worthy graduating high school seniors. The Path People find their way to paradise more by a path of footprints than by a pack of road maps. Anonymous

4 Sts. Peter and Paul 4 Treasures From Our Tradition They say that it is not so much that Columbus discovered America, but rather that after he arrived, the new world "stayed discovered." The sponsorship of Ferdinand and Isabella assured that the news would flash around Europe with an air of authority that other "discoverers" lacked. One of the often-mentioned early visitors is Saint Brendan the Navigator, a sixth-century Irish monk who had trouble staying at home. He is said to have sailed to "the Isle of the Blessed" in a leather-bound boat, and to have been away from his monastery for seven years. Upon his return, the stories of adventures to a new land attracted pilgrims to his monastery in the Blasket Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Columbus is said to have referred to The Voyage of Saint Brendan as a very popular adventure in those days. Only after his American journey is Brendan said to have gone to tamer lands to the east, England and Scotland. In 1976, Tim Severin set out on a two-year voyage to America from Ireland in a leather-bound boat, traveling in summer and hopscotching from the Faroes to Iceland to Newfoundland, and encountering along the way exactly what Saint Brendan describes: icebergs, whales and porpoises. Scholars warn not to dismiss this too quickly: just as the ancient Egyptian monks sought to live in the desert, the Celtic monks exile in a boat was the Irish equivalent. Five centuries after Brendan, other Irish monks may have visited here as a refuge from Viking terror. Rev. James Field Letting Go Who does not strive to be successful? What good person does not want to be able to provide for their family the necessities of life, to assure that they will have the means to feed, clothe, shelter, educate and care for themselves and those they love as well as help their neighbors, strangers and the needy? Is not that what is asked of us, to love God and our neighbor as ourselves? The readings today make clear that even more is required of us. We must do all those things and we must realize that doing so is only the first step to understanding what is at the center our lives. We must realize that our accomplishments are not the measure of our value and worth. However successful or unsuccessful we are, our worth is measured by the truth that Jesus suffered, died and rose for us. To truly know that, we must let go of everything else that roots us in time, space and expectation and be willing to follow eternity. The Punch Line The first reading is supposed to remind us of Solomon, who, when God promised to give him whatever he asked, chose wisdom over wealth or power. Now our modern view of wisdom is usually pictured as the knowledge and experience of an older person. In the scriptures it is God's Wisdom that is desired. More than just the wise sayings of Benjamin Franklin, scriptural wisdom means doing God's will in all things. As Jesus tried to tell the man in the Gospel, knowing and doing God's will is more precious than wealth or even family! So if wisdom is that good, why do so few seek it? Most of us have no problem doing God's will, as long as it is the same as ours. Or we do God's will if it is painless and convenient. I once donated money to a charity by sending a text message. I do not know if I would have done it if I had to write a check and mail it. Sometimes we are like the man in the Gospel, desiring wisdom but not willing to pay for it. Maybe our problem is that we do not trust God enough. The first reading, after praising wisdom more than health, wealth and beauty, ends with a promise of "countless riches" while Jesus promises that the one who gives up everything will receive "a hundred times more." Because the rich man left in sorrow, he missed the punch line. I can think of two ways to interpret that promise. One is that the more we give up for love of the Lord, the more we get back. When someone gives up selfishness and begins to love, he then becomes capable of receiving love. This leads to the second meaning of the promise: When we let God change us by giving up our worldly attachments, we find that we are happier because we experience God's love for us more deeply. So Wisdom is the way to happiness: We outgrow our desire for things that make us feel good and appreciate the joy of accepting God's love and sharing it with others. 5 Sts. Peter and Paul 5 St. Teresa Of Jesus October 15 Let nothing disturb you; let nothing frighten you. Gifted with a passionate spirit, young Teresa dreamed of converting Muslims and becoming a martyr. All things are passing; God never changes. But her mother's death when Teresa was fourteen inspired lifelong devotion to Our Lady, and Teresa entered the Carmelites, Mary's order, despite her father's objections and her own fragile health. Patience gains everything. Initially, she enjoyed her lax convent's sociability and "busyness," but mystical prayer and John of the Cross' collaboration inspired her to reform the Carmelites. Whoever has God lacks nothing. When her ideals encountered resistance and brought suffering, she maintained her peace and humor. Discovering devoured leftovers, she told her mildly scandalized nuns, "When I fast, I fast! When I eat, I eat!" To nuns demanding less work and more prayer in the convent schedule, she retorted: "What we really need around here are fewer starry eyes and more strong arms!" God alone is enough! The italicized sentences here are her "Breviary Bookmark," the simple, profound prayer of Teresa, the first woman Doctor of the Church. Peter Scagnelli St. Luke, Evangelist October 18 Patron of Doctors and Painters St. Luke was born at Antioch, Syria, according to the Church historian Eusebius. He was a Gentile by birth and a physician by profession. According to a legend of the sixth century he was also a painter. He was one of the earliest converts to the Faith and later became the missionary companion of St. Paul, whom he accompanied on part of his second and third missionary journeys, and attended during his Caesarean and Roman captivities. Little is known with certainty of his subsequent life. The unanimous tradition of the Church ascribes the third Gospel to St. Luke. Allusions to the citations from the Gospel are most frequent in early Christian writings, and even heretics made diligent use of this inspired book. The Gospel itself shows that its author was a person of literary powers, a physician, and a companion of St. Paul. Early Christian tradition ascribes the Apostles to about 75 A.D. Little is known with certainty about the place of its composition. Some of the ancient authors suggest Achaia (Greece); some of the manuscripts mention Alexandria or Macedonia; while modern writers also defend Caesarea, Ephesus or Rome. As an artist, St. Luke shows his skill in portraying living characters, and he has remained an inspiration to painters for centuries. As a historian, he is comparable with the great Greek and Latin writers. In his Gospel there is a steady movement of events from Nazareth to Jerusalem, whereas in Acts it is from Jerusalem to Rome. Sts. Isaac Jogues ( ) & John de Brebeuf ( ) & Companions October 19 Their mission was to New France, but the missionaries found in present day New York State and the Province of Ontario are a world wildly different from the homes they left behind. Six Jesuit priests, Fathers Isaac Jogues, John de Brébeuf, Anthony Daniel, Gabriel Lalemant, Charles Garnier, and Noel Chabanel and Jesuit lay volunteers Rene Goupil and John Lalande shared the Gospel with the Native Americans they met, in languages they painstakingly learned, and through images they creatively adapted to the indigenous cultures (for example, John de Brebeuf's " 'Twas in the Moon of Wintertime: the Huron Carol"). But their evangelization was caught up in turmoil beyond their control: a smallpox epidemic, battles between French and English trading interests the traders united only by their willingness to exploit the Native Americans and conflict among the tribes themselves, Huron, Mohawk and Iroquois. The missionaries' perseverance despite exhausting hardships, their steadfast courage in facing unspeakable tortures, and undaunted love even for those who martyred them bore fruit immediately in Kateri Tekakwitha's sanctity, eventually in the Catholicism that still flourishes in the United States and Canada.
