2 Thirtieth Sunday In Ordinary Time October 28, 2018 The Hope And Promise Of Redemption The prophet Jeremiah prophesies the end of the Babylonian exile. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so no one stumbles. The Lord's kindness and mercy are on these weak and broken. Here and in Psalm 126, we find the most lovely poetic images of God's love and care for us. "Those that sow in tears/shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weeping, carrying the seed to be sown, they shall come back rejoicing, carrying their sheaves (Psalm 126:5-6). Although God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be joyful again. We can see in this the hope and the promise of our own redemption, gathered from the far corners of the earth into the great banquet of God. All Saints November 1, Holy Day Masses for All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation, will be celebrated Thursday, November 1, 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. All Saints Day, the day on which we Catholics celebrate all the saints, known and unknown, is a surprisingly old feast. It arose out of the Christian tradition of celebrating the martyrdom of saints on the anniversary of their deaths. When martyrdoms increased during the persecutions of the late Roman Empire, local dioceses instituted a common feast day in order to ensure that all martyrs, known and unknown, were properly honored. First Friday November 2 Mass will be celebrated at 8:00 a.m. on First Friday in honor of The Most Blessed Sacrament. At the conclusion of Mass, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament begins and continues until Benediction at 5:00 p.m. Sign-up sheets for Adorers are at church s main entrance. Daylight Savings Time Ends! You are reminded to fall back by setting your clocks back one hour on Saturday, November 3, before going to bed. Offertory Giving After healing the blind man in today s Gospel, Jesus told him to go, to be on his way. But the man chose to follow Jesus. Being a disciple of Jesus is a choice. The stewardship way of life likewise involves a choice, in fact many choices. We choose to be grateful, we choose to live generously and we choose to trust that God will always provide for our needs. These are three choices central to the stewardship way of life. What choices will we make this week that give witness to our decision to follow Jesus Christ? Last Sunday Oct. 21 Envelopes Loose On Line Giving Total Second Collection World Missions $2, , $4, $1, All Souls November 2 A Mass in commemoration of all the faithful departed will be celebrated Friday, November 2, at 8:00 a.m. The envelopes submitted by parishioners which list those they wish remembered in Purgatorial Society Masses throughout the year will be carried to the altar in the processional of the Mass. They will then be placed beside the Tabernacle and remain there until next year. $5,000 Walmart Shopping Spree Raffle As part of our fundraising for the Jazz It Up for Life Soiree, we will be selling raffle tickets for a $5,000 Walmart Shopping Spree. Tickets are only $10.00 each and can be purchased at the Church Office or from Committee Members after various Masses. The drawing will be held on April 6, 2019, the evening of the Soiree. Treasures From Our Tradition Today is the feast of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, the first representative body of many Catholics who died for their faith between 1535 and 1679 to be beatified or canonized. Almost all of them died at Tyburn, a place of public execution near today's Marble Arch in Hyde Park, London. The first to suffer were Carthusian monks who refused to swear an oath supporting Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church in England, and the last was Saint Oliver Plunkett, the Primate Archbishop of Ireland. The method of execution was particularly vile, since the condemned were hanged and their living bodies quartered to be displayed around London as a horrific warning. Today, the tree-like gallows provides the design of a religious symbol, the canopy over the altar of the martyrs in Tyburn Convent. There, at the heart of the bustling city, a monastic community of women practices contemplative prayer and "spiritual hospitality" in the Benedictine tradition. Oddly, the community is French in origin; it was expelled from France a century ago when France outlawed contemplative monastic life. England, where the laws against Catholicism had been lifted, invited the community in. In gratitude to their new homeland, and in honor of those who gave their lives for the Catholic faith, the nuns came to Tyburn. In the public crypt, coats of arms stand for each of the 350 martyrs. Rev. James Field Pope Francis Prayer Intention That consecrated religious men and women may bestir themselves, and be present among the poor, the marginalized and those who have no voice. 5 Sts. Peter and Paul 5 Sts. Simon And Jude, Apostles Oct. 28 Saint Jude, apostle and... Hollywood success story? Indeed! Beyond Simon's being a "Zealot" for Israel's liberation and Jude's question about Jesus revealing Himself (John 14:22), no historic facts are known about either saint. But Saint Jude's wellknown patronage of "lost causes" and "hopeless cases" is largely due to a desperate vow made just before World War II by a struggling entertainer, the son of Arab-American immigrants, Danny Thomas. Unemployed, his wife about to give birth, Danny, attending Mass, impulsively donated his last $7.00 to the collection, promising: "Saint Jude, if you help me find my way in life, I will build a shrine in your honor!" Older Americans remember well Danny's long, successful movie and television career. Grateful parents worldwide know the miracles that have taken place for fifty years at his Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital, where needy children are cared for regardless of race, religion or financial resources, and monumental advances continue in healing and preventing pediatric cancers and catastrophic childhood diseases. A living, life-giving partnership is this "Communion of Saints": Simon, Jude, Danny Thomas us! Peter Scagnell Man Of Many Talents When you think of Jesus, what do you think was His job? Healer of the sick, the lame and the blind, as in today's gospel? Preacher? Teacher? Leader of men? Messiah? The second reading from Hebrews reminds us of His main duty: Priest. It calls Him a High Priest, referring to the Jewish priesthood in which one priest was chosen each year to offer the most important sacrifices and so appeal to God for forgiveness of the people s sins. Now this may sound like primitive religion, but it actually lets us understand Jesus even better. The high priest offered sacrifice for his own sins, as well as the people s. While Jesus did not sin, He experienced temptations just as we do and so can intercede for us as one who knows what it is like to be tempted. He also knows suffering, from His passion and death on the cross. If you ever wonder if you deserve to be forgiven, remember that Jesus died for all sinners, deserving or not. The High Priest was the one to bring the Israelites prayers to God and God's blessings to the people. Jesus also brings our prayers to His Father and shows us the Father's love. Our baptism gives us a share in that priesthood. You do not have to be ordained to pray for your friends and family. You do not have to be a bishop to bring God's love to those around you. When you listen to a friend who is hurting, or forgive someone who hurts you, you are blessing them with God's love. When you encourage them to have faith and trust in the Lord, you are bringing them to God. You are sharing in the priesthood of Christ. Tom Schmidt Broken Today's readings are about those whom society often looks down on, those who are physically disabled, who have been imprisoned. We read about those whose losses are so great that they cannot stop weeping. Hebrews reminds us that even those in the exalted position of priest are themselves beset by weakness. Weakness is at the very heart of the priest's ability to minister to others. Finally, it is a blind man, shouting from the side of the road, shushed by those around him, told not to make a scene, whom Jesus sees. His sight is returned because his faith and his first choice as a sighted person is to follow Jesus. The lesson of today's readings is that God is focused on the marginalized, on the outsiders, on those whom we too often try to silence. God is focused on those parts of ourselves, our weaknesses that we try to hide by turning our attention to anything else. The readings about the less-than-perfect talk about weakness, deep crushing sorrow, brokenness that is part of our humanity and a strength rooted in the love of God for us, despite all of that. Beloved Success is not measured by strength, wholeness, or power. Success is measured by our weakness, by God's embracing of that weakness and our choice to follow God. The priest has power only because of the weakness that is a part of each person. We are the blind, the lame, the sorrowing. We are the ones whom God saves and transforms. The blind man in us cries out when decorum would have us be quiet. Our faith cries out for salvation, for wholeness, for redemption, for sight, and we are heard. Our blindness is transformed into sight. With such vision we see the world as God sees it, broken and beloved.
