2 Twenty-First Sunday In Ordinary Time August 26, 2018 Households In God s Service In the ancient world, "household" was a widereaching concept. When Joshua today speaks of his household serving the Lord, he meant not just those people who lived inside his walls or those related to him by blood or marriage; he meant slaves or servants and their families, and anyone indebted to him in any way. Even his livestock and other possessions would be consecrated to service of God. In our world, we value allowing individuals their freedom to choose how they live, and would not think of offering our pets to the service of God. But, as we discern our vocation as disciples baptized into Christ, we can come to realize how far-ranging the "households" of our lives still are: how we act toward our spouses, children, roommates or anyone we live with; our behavior with neighbors; or in public as we encounter many "strangers" every day in stores or traffic who suddenly are "next door" to us. How can we use our time, our resources or gifts for selfless reasons rather than personal gain? No matter what life our witness to the Good News calls us to, we all have a "household" that must be consecrated to service of the Lord our God. My Own Church Sts. Peter and Paul has a new service called My Own Church, which allows you to register or update your parishioner information at any time and tracks your giving history. Go to our website and click the link to register as a member of our parish through My Own Church. During registration, please select Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Pearl River as your organization. After registering, you will be sent a temporary password to access your account; just remember to write down the password they give you and then the new one you create. Please enter your information as completely and accurately as possible. Offertory Giving In today s Gospel, we hear that a number of Jesus followers left Him because His message was too difficult for them to accept. In essence, they did not believe in Him. He then asked the Twelve if they wished to leave as well. Peter responds by making a profound profession of faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior. The Twelve made a choice and stood by their choice, remaining loyal to their commitment to Jesus. A good question for our reflection might be this: Are we satisfied with the stewardship we exercise over our baptismal commitment? Are we just along for the ride? Are we keeping Christ in front of us as we make decisions about our daily activities, our relationships, our parish, issues in the workplace, issues such as peace and justice? What is the quality of our stewardship? Last Sunday August 19 Envelopes Loose On Line Giving Holy Day Total $2, , $5, Church Office Closed Labor Day The Parish Office will be closed ALL DAY Labor Day, Monday, September 3. It will re-open Tuesday, September 4, at 1:00 p.m. Altar Flowers Donation The beautiful flower arrangements adorning the altar this weekend were donated in memory of Captain Pete Vogt on the anniversary of his death by his loving wife Fay Vogt. Pope Francis Prayer Intention That any far-reaching decisions of economists and politicians may protect the family as one of the treasures of humanity. Occupancy The value of life does not depend upon the place we occupy. It depends upon the way we occupy that place. St. Thérèse of Lisieux

4 Sts. Peter and Paul 4 Treasures From Our Tradition As anyone who has ever been to Rome in the summer knows, no time to visit there! The city is sweltering, and in a pre-air-conditioned world long ago, Romans figured out that they needed a break in the surrounding hills. Even the Pope clears out. His destination is usually Castelgandolfo, a lovely little hill town southeast of Rome, overlooking a tranquil lake. It has been a papal possession since about 1600, and in 1929, when most of the papal states were finally lost, the papal dwelling was given "extraterritorial rights," meaning that it is an extension of Vatican City and not under Italian rule. The Vatican observatory maintained telescopes here for decades, far from the glare of the city lights of Rome, but although the observatory offices remain here year round, the telescopes are in Arizona. Pope Francis spends less time here than his predecessors, though he still slows down his work pace in Rome. Vacations can help us visit friends and relatives, and revive those human contacts that the pace of our lives keeps us from cultivating. The pope needs a break, and so do you. Vacation comes from a word meaning to empty oneself. There's still time to clear the calendar for at least one golden summer day even if you don't have a personal castle in the hills! Rev. James Field Tilting The Scales Louisiana was the first and remains one of only two states to allow dissent in felony trial verdicts. Come join us September 10 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Luke Family Life Center, Rooms B and C, Slidell, as reporters from The Advocate present information about the history of the state s unusual split-verdict law from its start in the Jim Crow era, highlight the findings of the newspaper s year-long investigation into thousands of criminal trial records across the state, and take questions. On November 6, Louisiana voters will be asked whether the state should return, after 120 years, to requiring unanimous verdicts in all felony trials. Mass For God s Special Children The Mass for God s Special Children will be held Sunday, September 9, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, 444 Metairie Road, Metairie. For information, contact Joy Zainey at or visit As For Me And My Household Today's Gospel picks up the thread of the "Bread of Life" discourses in the Gospel of John. Jesus, after performing the miracle of the multiplication of loaves and crossing back over the lake to Capernaum (by walking on the water!), is teaching the people in the synagogue there. Using the example of the manna in the desert, He opens for them the mystery of the gift of His body and blood. Startled, as one can imagine, by the starkness of this teaching, many, even among His disciples, begin to drift away, finding the teaching "hard." It is a moment of decision for everyone. Like Joshua in the desert of Sinai, Jesus asks His people to choose whom they will serve, the One God or something else. Like Joshua, Peter speaks on behalf of his "household" and sides with the Lord. Peter's declaration of faith, "you are the Holy One of God," is preceded by a simple rhetorical question: "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (John 6:68, 69). We Will Serve The Lord To make the choice of whom to serve, whom to believe in and trust, it is necessary sometimes to come to a moment of crisis. The concept of the Eucharist was so difficult that many who followed Jesus could not accept it. But those who had an intimate relationship with Jesus, not one based on signs and miracles but based on love, knew that their lives had been forever changed. There was no going back; there were no other "gods" to serve. There was the One, and everything depended on that fact. It is love that makes the choices clearer. We do not completely understand this mystery, or many mysteries of life. But in the intimate relationship of faith, we believe and trust in the One who is faithful. We have been given a great gift, and we cannot possibly understand it fully. But we know we have been loved, that we love in return, and "we have come to believe." It makes all the difference. As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. (Joshua 24:15b) Please Support Our Sponsors Donald J. Belson, CLU Slidell

5 Sts. Peter and Paul 5 Saint Monica August 27 She had smiles for the neighbors, though her husband Patricius, found her religion and the charity it inspired annoying. She made tearful prayers in private for a son, outwardly self-assured but, as his mother knew, inwardly restless, and whose girlfriend of a dozen years had bore his child out of wedlock. Though not the first or last such mother and son, Monica and Augustine are the Church's most famous, so we keep their feast days back to back, with Monica's, fittingly, first. To Rome she followed Augustine, then to Milan, where years of prayer and nagging finally bore fruit in his conversion by Saint Ambrose. For six months, mother and son enjoyed the blessing of rediscovering each other. Just in time! On the way home to North Africa, Monica took sick and died near Rome. No child who has mourned a parent can read, unmoved, Augustine's tender account, in his Confessions, of Monica's last days. At this time of the year, when parents watch apprehensively as children leave for school, may Monica's perseverance and Augustine's longprayed-for conversion ease anxiety and kindle hope. Peter Scagnelli St. Raymond Nonnatus August 31 If his surname, Nonnatus, seems strange, it is because in Latin it means not born. In 1204, in the town of Portell, Spain, Raymond s father brought him into the world with a dagger, opening the womb of his mother, who had died in labor. Raymond s father owned several farms and he wanted his son to manage one of them. Raymond, however, was drawn to the religious life. Nearby was the ancient chapel of St. Nicholas and he would often go there to pray and meditate. Eventually, his father realized that Raymond was not meant to be a farmer and gave in to the boy s wishes to join the Mercedarians, in Barcelona. St. Peter Nolasco, the founder of the Mercedarians, presented Raymond with the Order s habit. In addition to the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, their members take a special fourth vow to give up their own selves for others whose faith is in danger. Father Raymond began his first redemption journey in 1224 to Valencia, which had been conquered by the Moors, who imprisoned Christians. He managed to gain the freedom of 233 captive Christians. Two years later, he traveled to Algiers, in Northern Africa, offering to become a prisoner in order to free another 140 captives. Three years later he went back to Algiers again. St. Raymond s last redemption was in Again, he went to Algiers, but this time he ran out of money and offered himself in exchange for Christian prisoners. In the dungeons, his captors heard him preaching and flipped out. To keep him quiet, the Moors used a searing iron to bore holes through his upper and lower lips. Then they put a padlock through the holes and locked his lips shut. The padlocks remained in place for eight months, until money arrived to ransom him. He returned to Spain in A year later, Raymond died. He was 36 years old. Tradition has it that the villagers, a local count, and the friars all claimed his body. Since nobody could agree on where the body should go, they placed it on the back of a blind mule. Then they watched as the mule ambled slowly to the chapel where Raymond Nonnatus had prayed so frequently as a teenager. He was buried at that chapel. St. Raymond Nonnatus was canonized a saint by Pope Alexander VII in He is the patron saint of childbirth, children and pregnant women. He is also patron for priests defending the seal of confession. St. Augustine August 28 St. Augustine of Hippo is one of the four great Latin Fathers of the Church. Augustine was born in North Africa in present-day Algeria. His mother was St. Monica and his father, Patricius, a pagan. Augustine showed early promise as a scholar, but he disappointed his mother by espousing Maniceism, gnostic religion and leading a hedonistic life (a life devoted solely to pleasure), even living with a mistress with whom he had a child. Eventually, due to Monica s prayers, he decided to become a Christian and was baptized by St. Ambrose in Milan. He became a priest, and later, the bishop of Hippo. Augustine was a prolific writer and is credited with writing one of the first autobiographies, his Confession. His books, homilies and letters are a rich source of theological insight still mined today by students of every Christian denomination or ecclesial community.
