1 Sixth Sunday Of Easter May 6, 2018 Gospel Refection Jesus gives us a command in today s gospel that supersedes all others: love one another. How much easier would it be to maintain a checklist, such as, going to church, celebrating the sacraments, and fasting on certain days. But the command to love knows no bounds, and thus Jesus invites us to an adult spirituality. Love is based on a personal relationship that is not transactional but self-giving. As Jesus says in the gospel, his love for his friends reaches the point of laying down his own life for them. First Holy Communion In preparation for this Sacrament, a First Communion Practice will be in the Church at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, May 12. Please arrive with your child at least 15 minutes prior to practice. At least one parent is required to remain with their child at all times. Besides providing instruction to the children, parents are given directions on seating, cameras at Mass and the reception. First Eucharist will take place at 8:30 a.m. Mass on May 13, Mother s Day. The children will also honor Mary with a May Crowning and placement of flowers on Mary s statue. Following the Mass, a reception will take place in the Parish for first communicants, parents and their special guests. If you regularly attend 8:30 a.m. Mass, but do not have a first communicant in your family, you may consider attending another Mass to accommodate extra seating for families who attend. Office Closure The parish office will close on Thursday, May 10, at 2 p.m. and will reopen on Friday, May 11, at 8:30 a.m. Pope Francis Prayer Intention That the lay-faithful may fulfill their specific mission, by responding with creativity to the challenges that face the world today. Parish Picnic TODAY Offertory Giving Jesus calls his disciples his friends and commands them to love one another as he has loved them. We are called to be stewards of this friendship; to love one another as Jesus loves us. Do we give serious attention to what this love requires of us? Does this require us to actively seek the welfare of others? What is the price of this friendship with the Lord? Order Of St. Louis IX Award Our parishioners Michael and Cynthia Ripoll, Jr. will be honored by Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond for their outstanding devotion to the work of the Catholic Church with the Order of St. Louis IX Medallion. Michael and Cynthia will receive the award at St. Joseph s Church on Sunday, May 6, at 3:00 p.m. The ceremony includes a prayer service and presentation of the medals. The Order of St. Louis IX Award was established nearly 40 years ago to honor the members of the laity who have contributed their time and talents to the Church. Congratulations to Michael and Cynthia for their devotion and dedication to the music ministry at Sts. Peter and Paul Church. In collaboration with Catholic Charities Counseling services and the six SAM group leaders in the Archdiocese, we have begun a year-long Community Forum Education Series called, You Are Not Alone responding to the opioid crisis in our communities. Addiction causes dysfunction and separation in the family. Most people do not seek help because they do not understand their addiction, or because they are too ashamed to seek information. On May 9, the second series of You Are Not Alone sessions will be hosted by St. Margaret Mary parish in the Evangelization Building. The presentation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The forum is free and light refreshments will be served. Please join us in our effort to bring information and awareness about addiction. This will be a time to come away with God, our Creator, to allow the One who loved each of us into being, to show each of us who we are created to be. This is an opportunity for high school students to give back to the community and achieve the service hours required by many parochial high schools. Sessions run for three weeks with options to earn hours. SERVE sites include a homeless shelter, adult day healthcare center and a food bank. Students must be incoming freshman through seniors.
