Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. (Isaiah 11:6) Second Sunday of Advent, Cycle A December 8, 2013

First Reading: Isaiah 11: A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. 2 The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. 3 His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; 4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. 5 Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins. 6 The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. 7 The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8 The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder's den. 9 They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. 10 On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious. 11 On that day the Lord will extend his hand yet a second time to recover the remnant that is left of his people, from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Ethiopia, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the coastlands of the sea. Responsorial Psalm 72:1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17 Lector: 1 Give the king your justice, O God, All: and your righteousness to a king s son. Lector: 2 May he judge your people with righteousness, All: and your poor with justice. Lector: 7 In his days may righteousness flourish All: and peace abound, until the moon is no more. Lector: 8 May he have dominion from sea to sea, All: and from the River to the ends of the earth. Lector: 12 For he delivers the needy when they call, All: the poor and those who have no helper. Lector: 13 He has pity on the weak and the needy, All: and saves the lives of the needy.

Lector: 17 May his name endure forever, All: his fame continue as long as the sun. Lector: May all nations be blessed in him; All: may they pronounce him happy. Second Reading: Romans 15:4-9 4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. 5 May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, 6 so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. 8 For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised on behalf of the truth of God in order that he might confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, 9 and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, "Therefore I will confess you among the Gentiles, and sing praises to your name"; Gospel Reading: Matthew 3: In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, 2 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." 3 This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: "Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.' " 4 Now John wore clothing of camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, 6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 7 But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruit worthy of repentance. 9 Do not presume to say to yourselves, "We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 10 Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 "I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

Homily The longings of our souls cry out, like John the Baptist. We are invited to repentance, or in the Greek, metanoia -- opening ourselves to knowledge above our own knowledge, or a turning of direction and a changing of our minds. Our deep longings nudge us toward awareness of the coming of a gift that is already being given to us but which we ourselves have not yet recognized. This week, stay attuned to these longings and listen to the questions which emerge in your mind. It is good to ask questions and to ask them in a spirit of openness to hear. Our willingness to hear and not to prejudge will take us into deeper levels of consciousness which can bring us to the brink of transformation. It sometimes seems that there are huge mountains or deep chasms that separate us from recognizing the truest parts of ourselves as well as from one another. First we deal with all the mind chatter, struggling to push it aside for a moment more easily said than done. And it seems to be worse this time of year. There is the incessant music and commercialization of the season. We may name some of the perceived barriers but if we are too quick to name them, even our labels may separate us from knowing. We may stop before we can really know. Do we have expectations of what should happen, or do we make assumptions, or do we project these mental attitudes on others? What habits rear their heads to interfere with holy silence? Do we name tasks or obligations that stand in our path? Are there people with whom we have unfinished business, resentment, or whom we feel will somehow fill the holes that we feel if only we can get their attention? Is it the time in our lives that we feel we must somehow get through before we can take the time to attend to God s Presence? Do we have to get to the next thing to be accomplished? When this is over, then I can think about it. Next year, for sure, with the New Year, it will be a goal to set aside quiet time. But there is a highway opening for the Adventing Presence today, if we will only stop where we are and go there. Each day as you pray Bless your eyes that you and the human race may see who you are and the hope that the universe holds for you. Bless your ears that you and the human race may hear the call to transformation. Bless your mind that you may be opened to new insights on how to reflect God in this world.

Bless your heart that Deep Heart within you, may be opened to birth the Adventing Presence. The season of Advent continues. Four thousand years of waiting for the Messiah are commemorated by the lighting of four candles. We join with a hopeful throng in the lighting of the Advent candles, symbols of our faith and signs of God s love. We are a people of hope. Last Sunday, at First Advent, the frail light of a single candle was lit which dared to pierce through the darkness of desolation. Hope lives in us and will abide in us. At Second Advent, we light the candle of peace. This light, too, must brave great darkness. In an age when people so seldom find peace within themselves, and when all the earth stands under the threat of total annihilation, we light a fire called peace. Peace that is not merely the absence of war and conflict, but peace that is the fullness of blessing for all. Shalom that is the peace for which we dare to hope a well-being, a completeness, a wholeness, and true meeting with one another. Christ comes to bring Shalom to those who have been separated from God and from one another. In the name of that Child born so long ago, we light the candle of peace. Next Sunday, we will light the third candle, which is one of joy and anticipation. Pray this week to allow anticipation and to prepare for the way of the Lord.
