Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the Na onal Shrine On Saturday, September 15, 2018, Bishop David Zubik will be leading a pilgrimage to our Na onal Shrine in Washington, DC. This year s pilgrimage will be special in that it will mark the 175 th anniversary of the Diocese of Pi sburgh. Highlights of the day include mass with Bishop Zubik, Holy Hour, concert of sacred music by the Pi sburgh Diocesan Choir, and a tour of the Shrine! Designated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops as a Na onal Sanctuary of Prayer and Pilgrimage, the Basilica is the na on s preeminent Marian shrine. We are hoping that we will be able to send at least one bus-load of people from St. Barbara, St. Mary, and Holy Child parishes. The bus will leave Bridgeville (exact loca on to be determined) at approximately 6 AM, and will return to the same loca on at approximately 11 PM that day. If you are interested in going on the bus, the cost will be $65.00 per person. 5 ALL ARE SENT Fifty days after Easter Sunday we celebrate the fulfillment of all God s promises in the feast of Pentecost, a feast that has sometimes been called the birthday of the church. One last time we are reminded that we Christians have received the Holy Spirit, not for our own benefit, but to enable us to follow our Christian vocation. The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost is the account in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for this Sunday help us to understand what it means to live out our Christian vocation. Paul s letter shows us the gifts and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to us. John s Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all his disciples to share his forgiveness and peace, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. For them, Pentecost was the fiftieth day after Passover, a feast of the first fruits of the harvest. It was the second most important feast of the year. Today, Jews gather on the eve of the feast to study scripture and the law, and after the feast begins at sundown, spend the day in joyful social gatherings. The meaning of the celebration is the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, so for Christians the connection to the gifts of the Holy Spirit is obvious. In Sicily and in the Pantheon in Rome, today the descent of the Holy Spirit is enacted with a stunning ritual. Some churches there have an eye in the roof open to the sky, called an oculus. After the Gospel today, thousands of rose petals fall from the oculus onto the assembly. Receive the Holy Spirit After his resurrection from the dead Jesus appears to his anxious Apostles and, knowing their fear and uncertainty, pours forth the Holy Spirit upon them and bestows the gift of peace. For the next forty days he promises that he will be with them always and that he will send the Advocate to be with them as they will be called to continue his work in the world. Finally, after ascending to heaven, Jesus sends forth his Spirit at Pentecost to fill the Apostles with confidence and courage in order to go out to all the world to tell the good news and grow the Church. As the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative continues to unfold we are called to prayer for a new Pentecost in the Church of Pittsburgh. This new outpouring of the Holy Spirit can bestow the peace we seek in the midst of change and planning for the future. God s Spirit can also fill us with the confidence and courage that all of us clergy and faithful alike will need to do our part to build up the Church and make it ever more alive!
