Parish Mission Statement St. Barbara Parish carries on the faith tradition established in 1894 by our Slovenian and German ancestors. Like our founders, we are called by Baptism to live as examples of Catholic faith and values, and as witnesses of Christ in the world. Our parish is small in size but great in heart. We are a diverse community who together seek to strengthen faith through liturgy and education, and through service to community in charity. We strive to love God with all our hearts and minds. 4 WE ARE THE BODY OF CHRIST, and are called to share our gifts in service to the Church. Through the diocesan-wide planning initiative, On Mission for The Church Alive!, Bishop Zubik is asking for our help as we enter into parish consultations. The dates of two sessions here at St. Barbara Parish are listed on this week s On Mission bulletin insert. Be the hands, the feet, and the heart of Christ by getting involved. See you there! All High School Youth are invited to come to our fall kickoff youth group event. We will be going bowling at Sports Haven on October 2nd from 2:00 to 4:00 PM with the Our Lady of Grace Youth Group. Bring a friend and $10 and enjoy an afternoon of bowling! There will be cash prizes to the best guy and girl bowler. Other upcoming events planned for this year are: November 6 - Youth Mass 6pm with fellowship from 7:00-8:00 PM in the Church Hall November Fall Retreat December 16 - Christmas Party More information will be provided in upcoming bulletins! The Society of St. Vincent de Paul The Society is a worldwide lay Catholic organiza on dedicated to serving those in need regardless of race, religion, or economic status. The Conferences operate under the auspices of the Bishop and are independent from the parishes in which they serve. YOUR St. Vincent de Paul Conference operates out of Holy Child Parish and is therefore called the Holy Child Conference, but we serve Collier Township, South Faye e, Bridgeville, and Cecil. The Conference is badly in need of new ac ve members if we are going to con nue our call to serve the less fortunate. If the Holy Spirit is calling you to more ac vely live out your faith, please take one of the brochures at the back of the church read it, pray about it, and call Holy Child to be put in touch with one of our members for more details. Mark your calendars! On Saturday, October 1st, St. Vincent de Paul will be hos ng their Fall Clothing Drive and Bake Sale in the Holy Child church parking lot from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This is your opportunity to clean out your closets and drawers of all unwanted clothes and accessories. You ll see a big St. Vincent de Paul truck in the parking lot and you will be tempted to take home some of the homemade bake goods that will be available. Hope to see you there. October 20th 1 Year Anniversary Celebration/Meeting: 6:30 pm in the parish social hall. To all who have participated or who would just like to join in for an evening, we are going to have a potluck supper to help us celebrate our first year anniversary. To all those who have donated, driven, bagged, boxed, sewn and put in hundreds of selfless hours to help those in need in our local and Pittsburgh communities, thank you and may God bless. October 28, Friday, Family Promise. A big THANK YOU from Peggy, Family Promise Coordinator at Bethany Presbyterian's program! St. Barbara's Helping Hands group provided 3 very large family-style dinners on January 8, March 25, and August 26, We also provided overnight staff, stay-n-play volunteers for evening activities with the children and parents, and dinner set up and clean up, for a yearly total of 72 volunteer hours. Our NEXT Family Promise night is Friday, October 28. Please consider any one of the four volunteer opportunities listed above, the families would be most grateful! Because of the generosity of so many people in our area, approximately $ worth of products and "feel good" items were put into these packs. 5 LOOKING BEYOND OURSELVES The message found in today s readings is an oft-told story. Citizen Kane, Daddy Warbucks, and King Midas are only a few of the familiar fictional characters who thought enormous wealth could buy happiness and fulfillment. Daddy Warbucks admitted stepping on a few people in his climb to the top. Kane tried to buy the printed word and stardom for his young wife, while King Midas conjured immense wealth and tragedy by his very touch. We learn clearly in today s readings that none of this is really possible. True happiness comes from caring for someone other than ourselves. It comes from the pursuit of the virtues Paul described to Timothy: faith, love, gentleness, godliness, righteousness, and endurance. The Gospel reminds us that we dare not ignore the needs of others, acting as though we don t notice their suffering. God s call to us is much too clear to disregard for even one more day. Cosmas and Damian St. Vincent de Paul Wednesday: St. Lawrence Ruiz and Companions; St. Wenceslaus Thursday: Jubilee Year of Mercy Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Jubilee for Catechists Amos castigates religious people who, "comfortably complacent" (6:1, 5), ignore the unfolding collapse of culture, nation, religion (6:6). In Jesus' parable, such complacency becomes the rich man's undoing. He neither hurt nor harmed Lazarus, neither denied him leftovers nor ordered him removed. That is Jesus' devastating point. The rich man did nothing wrong to Lazarus; he just did nothing at all good for him. Only in death, separated by "a great chasm" (Luke 16:26), could the rich man finally see Lazarus, whom he had failed to see in life, right before his eyes. Like the rich man's "five brothers still in my father's house" (16:27-28), we who are alive in the Church still have time to see that same Someone, Jesus, lying neglected right at our door--and time to do something.
