Parish Mission Statement St. Barbara Parish carries on the faith tradition established in 1894 by our Slovenian and German ancestors. Like our founders, we are called by Baptism to live as examples of Catholic faith and values, and as witnesses of Christ in the world. Our parish is small in size but great in heart. We are a diverse community who together seek to strengthen faith through liturgy and education, and through service to community in charity. We strive to love God with all our hearts and minds. 4 ST. BARBARA'S ANNUAL CHRISTMAS CAROL SING-A-LONG Mark your calendars! Our annual Carol sing-a-long will take place in the parish hall at 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 18th! Invite your friends, relatives and neighbors too, and join us for refreshments and Christmas Carols! We will begin with Evening Prayer in the church at 6:30 p.m., followed by singing in the hall at 7 p.m. Free fun evening open to all ages! No need to have a ticket or reservation - just come and join us! COOKIE DONATIONS NEEDED FOR DECEMBER 18TH CAROL SING Cookies and hot chocolate will be served at our Christmas sing-a-long on Sunday, December 18th, and we are asking for donations of cookies from willing parishioners! Any kind; any amount will be welcomed and appreciated. Donations may be brought to the parish hall on Saturday, December 17th after the 4 p.m. Mass, or on Sunday, December 18th anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 11 a.m. Thank you in advance for your generosity! WARM CLOTHING DRIVE The CCD classes will be sponsoring their annual "Warm Clothing Drive" beginning on Sunday, December 4th, and continuing through Sunday, January 4th. Warm socks, gloves, hats, boots, coats, sweatshirts and sweaters that are either new or gently used will be gratefully appreciated by those who are helped by our local St. Vincent depaul Society. All sizes - children and adults - are needed. Donations may be placed in the bins that are located at the doors to the church, or they may be brought to the parish hall during the regular Sunday CCD time, which is 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Our parish CCD students and teachers thank you for your help! Our Angel Tree is now in the Church. We hope that you will participate in this project, giving your family a chance to help those in need during the holidays! Please note that all gifts must be returned by Sunday, December 11th in order for us to have time to distribute them in time for Christmas! When returning the gift, please place it in a gift bag with the angel tree tag attached so that we know where to take the gift. This year we will be collecting gifts for Angel s Place, Women s Care Clinic of Pittsburgh (formerly Pregnancy Resource Center), Family Promise, Serenity Pines, and Washington Commons. A special Thank you to Adele Marinacci and St. Barbara Helping Hands for helping with this project! Since the onset of Helping Hands, the Joseph Kimutis Memorial Fund has donated $2,000 to help support our efforts in helping those less fortunate in our community. Joseph's family annually hosts the Joseph Kimutis Memorial Spaghetti Dinner to honor his memory. Please help support this annual event by attending dinner on Saturday, December 10th from 4 to 7 pm at Our Lady of Grace School Cafeteria, Scott Township. Tickets may be purchased at the door. Oplatki Sharing of the oplatek is the most ancient and beloved of all Polish Christmas traditions. Oplatek is a thin wafer made of flour and water, similar in taste to the hosts that are used for communion during Mass. The Christmas wafer is shared before Wigilia, the Christmas Eve supper. The head of the household usually starts by breaking the wafer with his wife and then continues to share it with everyone at the table. Wishes for peace and prosperity are exchanged and even the pets and farm animals are given a piece of oplatek on Christmas Eve. Legend has it that if animals eat oplatek on Christmas Eve, they will be able to speak in human voices at midnight, but only those who are pure of spirit will be able to hear them. Oplatki wafers are available at the back of the church for a donation of $2.00 per envelope.

5 PREPARE THE WAY Saint John the Baptist appears on the scene today as Advent enters its second week. The mysterious consumer of locusts and wild honey, John echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah as he calls for repentance in the face of the nearness of the kingdom of heaven. The rhythms of the Christian life are often confounding. Each year we meet the Baptist and hear his calls for repentance. Each year we see him pointing to the one who is coming after him, the Lord Jesus. Yet each year the words and actions of John the Baptist echo anew in our hearts, because we have fallen into old sinful traps again and again. Advent gives us the opportunity once again to turn away from our sinful ways and embrace the gospel way of life. This position is a parttime, paid position during school hours. Applicants should have a passion for teenagers and be comfortable as a public speaker. It s Been a Loooooooong Time Since My Last Confession --This Advent season, each Catholic parish in the Diocese of Pittsburgh will have their doors open and lights on Wednesday, December 14 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. If you have been reluctant to come to the sacrament, have been away for some time or just found it difficult to get to a Saturday afternoon confession time, this is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Christ and His Church. The Light is On for You!, especially if you haven t been to confession in a while.
