Parish Mission Statement St. Barbara Parish carries on the faith tradition established in 1894 by our Slovenian and German ancestors. Like our founders, we are called by Baptism to live as examples of Catholic faith and values, and as witnesses of Christ in the world. Our parish is small in size but great in heart. For more information or to register call A Mini-Ignatian Retreat -- will be offered this year during the season of Lent at the Parish of Saint Louise de Marillac, 320 McMurray Road in Upper Saint Clair Each Tuesday evening, during our weekly Marian Devotions, a series of sermons that will form the retreat presented by guest preachers. We will examine the healing power of Jesus in the Scriptures as we reflect on the healing miracles of Jesus in the Gospel narratives of Saint Matthew. Weekend Retreat for Post-Abortion Healing Rachel s Vineyard, a weekend retreat designed to heal the emotional and spiritual wounds of abortion, will be held on May 5-7, 2017 at Tabor House in Millvale. In a confidential and supportive atmosphere, Rachel s Vineyard demonstrates God s love, forgiveness, and compassion to women (and men) struggling with abortion s aftermath. The Saint Barbara's Knights of Columbus will be running the "Let's Bag Hunger" campaign during Lent to directly benefit the Bridgeville area food bank. The Knights will be handing out brown paper bags with an attached list of several food items after Saturday and Sunday masses. Please consider taking a bag or two and returning it filled with the listed items the following week to the table at the front of the church. Let's Bag Hunger and help our neighbors in need this Lenten season! We are now down to a very few seats still available for our spectacular trip to southern Italy this October. If you would like to join Fr. Dennis and a limited number of fellow Pittsburghers on an unforgettable and customized tour of Rome and southern Italy, you should act quickly! We will spend three days in Rome visiting the Vatican, participating in a papal audience in St. Peter s Square, and touring the ancient sites and grandeur of the eternal city. Other destinations include, but are not limited to, San Giovanni Rotondo (home of St. Padre Pio), Pompeii, Sorrento, the Isle of Capri, the Amalfi Coast, and Naples! 5 DON T BE ANXIOUS People have, it seems, a natural penchant for misplaced emphasis on unimportant things. They can easily get caught up with what they re having for dinner or what they will wear. Often it is a tragedy that helps people to refocus on what is really important. What I shall wear is an irrelevant question when I am facing surgery or chemotherapy. What s for dinner is immaterial to those living through grief or unemployment. In today s Gospel, Jesus tells us not to worry. He doesn t say, Don t eat. Don t cook. Don t buy clothes. He says, Don t worry. Jesus asks us not to relinquish our responsibilities but to let go of our anxiety. Anxiety betrays a lack of trust and Jesus reminds us that Your heavenly Father knows all that you need (Matthew 6:32). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. It s Been a Loooooooong Time Since My Last Confession This Lenten season, each Catholic parish in the Diocese of Pittsburgh will have their doors open and lights on Wednesday, March 15 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. If you have been reluctant to come to the sacrament, have been away for some time or just found it difficult to get to a Saturday afternoon confession time, this is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Christ and His Church. The Light is On for You!, especially if you haven t been to confession in a while. Sing with the St. Barbara Choir on Your Lenten Journey! As we journey to the cross with Jesus, consider joining the choir to praise and honor Our Lord in yet another way, even if just for the Lenten and/or Easter Season! No musical experience needed (honestly!!), and all ages and voice types are welcome and needed. The only requirement is that you should be able to read. Please join us for our Thursday evening rehearsals (7-8:30 pm) and feel free to see Emily at the organ or any choir member for more details! The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of These obligations should not be taken lightly. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful do not have an obligation to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in an authentic sense of penance and are encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age. All members of the Christian faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, wedding rehearsals or receptions, or funeral wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation.
