Parish Mission Statement St. Barbara Parish carries on the faith tradition established in 1894 by our Slovenian and German ancestors. Like our founders, we are called by Baptism to live as examples of Catholic faith and values, and as witnesses of Christ in the world. Our parish is small in size but great in heart. We are a diverse community who together seek to strengthen faith through liturgy and education, and through service to community in charity. We strive to love God with all our hearts and minds. We invite you to join us in celebration of God s holy sacraments, to serve His One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, and to spread His Gospel, the Word of Jesus Christ. Please pray for the repose of the soul of Lois Reppar who was buried from St. Barbara Church. May she rest in peace. May her family and friends know the fullness of Christ s love. The Bridgeville Community Food bank thanks us for our continuing generosity. During the July 16th distribution, 89 families were assisted which included 45 children, 79 adults and 55 of the elderly. 4 St. Barbara Helping Hands Upcoming events/meetings: Aug. 10 Project Bologna Sandwich 10:00 AM in the parish hall. If possible, please bring a box of sandwich baggies. If anyone would like to contribute mustard or sandwich bags and can't make it to the event, just leave them in a grocery bag in the back of the church. In July, we made over 600 sandwiches and ran out of baggies! August Helping Hands meeting is cancelled. We will see everyone at the September 15th meeting at 6:30pm. There is always plenty to do so bring the family! Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Thanks to all who donated to Helping Hands to aid the victims of domestic violence. Your generosity was deeply appreciated. End of August and early September: "Walk A Mile in My Shoes" project will begin. This project will benefit the needy and homeless of our area with providing shoes and boots for the upcoming school year and winter season. Men's, women's and children's gently worn shoes and boots will be collected and distributed. (please no sandals or open toed footwear). Collection dates will be forthcoming. South Fayette and Collier Police Departments in partnership with Saint Barbara Knights of Columbus have begun to organize a teddy bear drive for the officers of those departments to give to children involved in traumatic incidents a teddy bear for comfort. Saint Barbara Knights of Columbus will have a box in the main entrance after all Mases in August to collect new or gently used teddy bears. Monetary donations will also be accepted. Saint Barbara Knights of Columbus thanks you in advance for your generosity. Registration for next year's CCD classes will be held on Wednesday, August 17th from 7-8 p.m.; Sundays, August 21st and 28th from 9-11 a.m., and Wednesday, August 31st from 7-8 p.m. All registrations will be held in the Parish Hall. Next year's classes for Grades K thru 7 will begin on Sunday, September 25th from 9:15-10:15 a.m., and for 8th grade on Monday, Sept. 19th from 7-8:15 p.m. 9th graders who will be returning for the Sacrament of Confirmation will receive their class information once the date for Confirmation has been set by the Bishop's Office. 9th grade students do not need to register this year. Help area patients, give blood on September 4, 2016 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at St. Barbara Social Hall. If you know someone who has cancer, been in an accident, had surgery or has been burned, then you probably already know someone who has used blood. Please give blood and help ensure that it is there when members of our community need it. Please give blood. The Diocese of Pittsburgh is once again planning its annual Golden Wedding Celebration for couples who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in This year s event will begin with Mass at St. Paul Cathedral on Sunday, October 2nd, at 2:30 p.m. Bishop Zubik will be the main celebrant and a light reception will follow in the Cathedral hall. If you are a couple celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary any time in 2016 and would like to receive an invitation to this event, please call the rectory or drop a note in the collection basket no later than Monday, August 15. Weekend Retreat for Post-Abortion Healing Rachel s Vineyard, a weekend retreat designed to heal the emotional and spiritual wounds of abortion, will be held September 16-18, 2016 at the Spiritan Center in Bethel Park. In a confidential and supportive atmosphere, Rachel s Vineyard demonstrates God s love, forgiveness, and compassion to women (and men) struggling with abortion s aftermath. 5 OUR FATHER IN FAITH The Letter to the Hebrews today sings a hymn of praise to Abraham and to his faith, upon which are founded the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Abraham is called father in faith by more people on earth than anybody else, numerous as the sands of the seashore or the stars of the heavens. Hebrews tells us it was this foundational faith that led Abraham to obey God s call when he heard it, though he was called to journey to a land he did not know and told he would father a mighty race through a marriage he thought was barren. But Abraham s faith, the author of Hebrews tells us, was his realization of what he hoped for, and the evidence of what he could not see. How often are we, in simple daily events of our own Christian vocation, called to an unfamiliar place or told we are to do something we do not believe we can? Pontian and Hippolytus; Blessed Virgin Mary Jubilee Year of Mercy Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Last Sunday's "Parable of the rich fool" delivered a compelling reason to do the right thing--now: "You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you" (Luke 12:20). Today, Jesus warns us: "You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come" (12:40). Though we do not know when our Master will come, we do know what our Master expects to find. Jesus expects us to be vigilant (12:37) and diligent (12:42) in our work for the kingdom, but also filled with reverent mercy toward our fellow servants and ourselves. Hopefully, Jesus' warning not to get drunk and beat each other up (12:45) does not apply to us literally!
