If necessary, you are welcome to sit for those parts of the liturgy when it is normal to stand. Please stand. PROCESSIONAL HYMN During which, there will be a station at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. Sing to him in whom creation found its shape and origin; Spirit, moving on the waters, troubled by the God within; source of breath to all things breathing, life in whom all lives begin. 4

GREETING Please remain standing. Sing to God, the close companion of our inmost thoughts and ways; who, in showing us his wonders, is himself the power to gaze; and his will, to those who listen, by a still small voice conveys. Holy men, both priest and prophet, caught his accents, spoke his word; his the truth behind the wisdoms which as yet know not our Lord; he the love of God eternal, which in Christ was seen and heard. Tell of how the ascended Jesus armed a people for his own; how a hundred men and women turned the known world upside down, to its dark and furthest corners by the Wind of Whitsun blown. Pray we then, O Lord the Spirit, on our lives descend in might; let thy flame break out within us, fire our hearts and clear our sight, till, white-hot in thy possession, we, too, set the world alight. Praise, O praise the Holy Spirit, praise the Father, praise the Word, Source, and Truth, and Inspiration, Trinity in deep accord: through thy Voice which speaks within us we thy creatures own thee Lord. Amen. Words: Michael Hewlett (b. 1916) Music: WESTMINSTER ABBEY, H. Purcell [NEH 205] The Rector welcomes the congregation and acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land. I acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora nation who, under God, are the traditional custodians of this land on which we worship, and pay respect to their elders both past and present. 5

The Celebrant continues, This past National Reconciliation Week has marked the 50th anniversary of the referendum that gave voting rights to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is also the 25th anniversary of the historic Mabo decision in the High Court. We therefore take this opportunity to acknowledge our indigenous brothers and sisters and pray for justice, equity and reconciliation for all Australians. Celebrant In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The Lord be with you. And also with you. KYRIE Please remain standing as the Choirs sings and the altar is censed. CHILCOTT A LITTLE JAZZ MASS GREEK TEXT PRAYER BOOK TEXT Lord, have mercy Christ, have mercy Lord, have mercy Deacon Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. Jesus said: This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself. The Spirit of truth comes to convict of sin, of righteousness, and of judgement. A silence for self-examination follows. Celebrant Let us pray, Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith, pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 6

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS Sung by the Choir CHILCOTT A LITTLE JAZZ MASS LATIN TEXT Gloria in excelsis Deo et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te. Benedicimus te. Adoramus te. Glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe. Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris, Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus. Tu solus Dominus. Tu solus Altissimus, Jesu Christe. Cum Sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. PRAYER BOOK TEXT Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, at the feast of Pentecost you sent your Holy Spirit to the disciples, filling them with joy and boldness to preach the gospel: empower us with that same Spirit to witness to your redeeming love and draw all people to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 7

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THE CHILDREN Celebrant And now I invite all children who are going to Kids@Church, with their parents if they wish, to come forward. The children, parents and Kids@Church leaders come forward and stand at the chancel steps. Celebrant Children of God, we acknowledge you and now we send you forth to Kids@Church. May the Scriptures light your way, may God s love fill your hearts with love, and may your lives be marked by hope and joy. Children We go on our way in the strength of Christ. Amen. The children walk in procession to the west porch and the congregation sings Please sit. Father welcomes all his children to his family through the Son; Father giving his salvation, life for ever has been won. In the water, in the word in his promise, be assured: those who are baptised and believe shall be born again. Father welcomes all his children to his family through the Son; Father giving his salvation, life for ever has been won. FIRST READING A reading from the Acts of the Apostles 2: 1 21 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. of them were filled with the 8

Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs in our own languages we hear them speaking about God s deeds of power. were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? But others sneered and said, They are filled with new wine. But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. A short silence is observed. Reader For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. PSALM 104: Sung by the Choir. Chant: Plainsong O Lord, how manifold are thy works: in wisdom hast thou made them all; the earth is full of thy riches. So is the great and wide sea also: wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts. There go the ships, and there is that Leviathan: whom thou hast made to take his pastime therein. These wait all upon thee: that thou mayest give them meat in due season. 9

When thou givest it them they gather it: and when thou openest thy hand they are filled with good. When thou hidest thy face they are troubled: when thou takest away their breath they die, and are turned again to their dust. When thou lettest thy breath go forth they shall be made: and thou shalt renew the face of the earth. The glorious Majesty of the Lord shall endure for ever: the Lord shall rejoice in his works. The earth shall tremble at the look of him: if he do but touch the hills, they shall smoke. I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live: I will praise my God while I have my being. And so shall my words please him: my joy shall be in the Lord. SECOND READING A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 12: 1 13 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says Let Jesus be cursed! and no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptised into one body Jews or Greeks, slaves or free and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. A short silence is observed. Reader For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. 10

Please stand. HYMN O Thou who camest from above, the pure celestial fire to impart, kindle a flame of sacred love on the mean altar of my heart. There let it for thy glory burn with inextinguishable blaze, and trembling to its source return in humble prayer, and fervent praise. Jesus confirm my heart s desire to work, and speak, and think for thee; still let me guard the holy fire, and still stir up thy gift in me. Ready for all thy perfect will, my acts of faith and love repeat, till death thy endless mercies seal, and make my sacrifice complete. Words: Charles Wesley ( ) Music: HEREFORD Samuel Sebastian Wesley ( ) [NEH 431] Please remain standing and turn to face the Gospel reader. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Cantor Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. eluia! 11

HOLY GOSPEL JOHN 20:19 23 Deacon The Lord be with you. And also with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St John. It was evening on the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. Deacon For the Gospel of the Lord, SERMON The Reverend John Stewart Associate Rector A silence for reflection follows the sermon. 12

CREDO Please stand. 13

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Deacon Let us pray for the world and for the church. Please kneel or sit. The bidding and response at the end of each prayer is Intercessor Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. The bidding and response at the end of the Prayers of the People is Deacon Please stand. Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. GREETING OF PEACE Celebrant Christ has reconciled us to God in one body by the cross. We meet in his name and share his peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. We greet one another in the name of the Lord. OFFERTORY HYMN DURING WHICH A COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH S MINISTRY WILL BE RECEIVED Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. 14

O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing; true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling. Words: Bianco da Siena (d.1434) trans R.F. Littledale ( ) Music: DOWN AMPNEY R. Vaughan Williams ( ) [NEH 137] Descant: Walter Sutcliffe When the Gifts have been prepared, they are presented. Celebrant SURSUM CORDA Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts of bread and wine to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever! 15

GREAT THANKSGIVING Celebrant glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. Today we give you thanks that in fulfilment of your promise you pour forth your Spirit upon us filling us, with gifts and leading us into all truth. You give us power to proclaim your gospel to all nations and to serve you as a royal priesthood. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: SANCTUS AND BENEDICTUS Sung by the Choir LATIN TEXT Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Osanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Osanna in excelsis. CHILCOTT A LITTLE JAZZ MASS PRAYER BOOK TEXT Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Celebrant Deacon Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ s body and blood. On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: 16

Celebrant Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise: The bell is rung, a silence is kept and the people remain standing as the Thanksgiving continues. LORD S PRAYER Celebrant As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray: 17

BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND INVITATION TO COMMUNION The Celebrant breaks the Eucharistic Bread and says: As this broken bread was once many grains, which have been gathered together and made one bread: so may your Church be gathered from the ends of the earth into your kingdom. AGNUS DEI Sung by the Choir LATIN TEXT Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem. CHILCOTT A LITTLE JAZZ MASS PRAYER BOOK TEXT Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us your peace. Deacon Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. During Communion, the Choir will sing the following motet: 18
