2 The season of Lent challenges us to walk the road to Jerusalem alongside Jesus. To walk the road that will eventually lead to his crucifixion and death. In these forty days we walk through the valley of the shadow of death beside our savior and contemplate what it means that God would come to die for our sake. Along the way we contemplate our own sin, our own brokenness. Christ calls us to follow him down this dark road. It is a part of our calling as Disciples. In January and February, as a part of our desire to engage in Discipleship, the congregation was invited to articipate in a book discussion of Robert Schnase s Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations. Fruitful Congregations, Schnase tells us, engage in passionate worship, intentional faith development, radical hospitality, risk-taking mission and service, and extravagant generosity. As we enter into the season of Lent, we will focus on these five practices to help us engage with the Gospel readings we hear each Sunday. Walking with Jesus On Sunday mornings we will hear the Gospel reading and a sermon that unpacks the way that Gospel demonstrates one of the five practices. On Wednesday nights our 9 th Grade Confirmation students will present a dramatization of the same Gospel. Then our Confirmation students, their mentors, and anyone else who would like to join the conversation (that means you are Invited!), will dig deeper into the Gospel reading for the week and think about the practice of the week. We invite you to come and be inspired by the stories of everyday people encountering Jesus. Come and think about how it changed their lives. Come and contemplate how Jesus has changed your life. Come and wonder together how Christ might be challenging Trinity to: worship more passionately, develop our faith with intentionality, extend radical hospitality to everyone who comes to this place, take risks in regard to mission and service, and be extravagant in our generosity. May this season of contemplation lead us all to more faithful discipleship and deepen our engagement together in conversations of faith. Blessings, Pastor Susan Community Lenten Services Jesus is Lord March 8 March 15 March 22 March 29 April 5 Lunch at 11:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran, th Ave SE Service at 12:15 p.m. at St. Paul s United Methodist Church, th Ave NE at First Church of the Nazarene, th Ave SE at First Congregational Church, UCC, nd St SE at St. James Basilica, 622 1st Ave S Good Friday (April 13) at United Presbyterian, 302 2nd Ave SE at NOON, no lunch served A free-will donation will be accepted for the cost of the lunch with the remaining monies being donated to the local Homeless Coalition Committee. We have studied such topics as: Who is our Neighbor? ThanksGIVING, 1000 Things Went Right Today and What Does Love Look Like? Along with these lessons and others we have been practicing the art of service and the blessing of benevolence. Because you, our Trinity family, encourage, love and support us in so many ways, we have been able to put these lessons into action. Not only have we learned about, wrestled with and discussed making a difference, we have done so. Since August, the Youth have logged countless service hours and have given away every penny earned and tithed. We have earned funds through pancake breakfasts, lefse sales, catering jobs and more. On Sundays, during PULSE and GODSquad times, an offering is also taken. These funds have allowed us to give globally and locally. So far this school year, we haven given to ELCA World Hunger and in Jamestown to Community Action. Through Community Action, 154 families were fed with money raised by our young people. 154!! Praise be to GOD! Our annual Christmas servant event is another way that we gave back this year. We have also made tie quilts for Trinity members in nursing homes and made and sent Valentines with personal messages of encouragement and love. We are seeing God at work through and in our young people. Thank You for being a part of all of this; a part of our learning, our giving, our serving, and of our growing. May Peace be Yours. Love, Kirstie 3

5 Young at Heart s favorite activity of gathering to share a meal and conversation will continue at Grizzly s Wood-Fired Grill at 11:30 Monday, March 13. The order-off-the-menu gathering is open to all seniors. Anyone needing a ride is asked to call the church office by 10 a.m. 90 Hearts for Red Willow Included with the thank you note WELCA received from Red Willow was information that Richard Solberg of Fargo has pledged to match any and all donations of $900 or less received by Red Willow in 2017, including the donation Trinity WELCA sent. Baskets of Promise Lenten Project Trinity is participating in Lutheran World Relief s Baskets of Promise Lenten drive to collect new personal care items and assemble Personal Care Kits for persons in need around the world. The drive will begin March 1 and continue the 6 weeks of Lent. Items needed for each kit are one light weight bath towel (between 20" x 40" and 52" x 27"), dark color preferred*; 2 or 3 bath size bars of soap equaling 8 to 9 oz., any brand, in original wrapping; one adult-size toothbrush in original wrapping; one sturdy comb; and one metal nail clipper. A box will be in the Gathering Space to receive donated items. *Be sure to shop for light to medium weight towels, which are easier for Kit recipients to hand wash and air dry, take up less space and are less expensive to ship. Thanks for the generosity of Trinity in providing for this worldwide need in addition to the more local Faith Quest collection of somewhat similar items for Blessing Bags for the homeless during their Good Samaritan rotation and the collection of funds for Project Ignite Light in the drink offering and the Monday evening offering in February. Quilters Needed Quilting continues in March and help is needed tying quilts beginning at 9:30 am until 3 p.m. (or any part of that time) Friday, March 10 and Monday, March 20. If you re staying through noon, plan to bring a sack lunch. Donations of fabric, including larger pieces or colored sheets for backings as well as for quilt squares, which could be smaller pieces. A working sewing machine is also needed. Baby Care Kits Saved After Hurricane Matthew Baby Care Kits provided by Lutheran World Relief were pre-positioned in Haiti when Hurricane Matthew ripped through the country, affecting more than 1.4 million people. Though the kits were stored safely and securely, the storm blew the roofs off most of the buildings in the storage compound and many of the Baby Care Kits were soaked by the rain. Generous community members opened up all the kits and meticulously washed all the baby clothing, blankets, and diapers and laid them out to dry. They reassembled the kits, which were then distributed in some of the hardest hit areas in the country. 9 In January, Trinity members participated in a survey and individual interviews and focus groups facilitated by Pastor Jana Swenson from Kairos and Associates. A detailed review of the combined responses from the congregation was shared with Trinity s Council and other leaders on January 28.
