The first year, we looked in at Trinity s ministry and internal workings as a congregation. We determined that calling an Associate Pastor I will keep watch to see what the LORD will say to me. was mission critical for the congregation we expect Trinity to be. Trinity chose a Call Committee and discerned what kind of Associate Pastor Then the LORD answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. would serve the congregation well. Nearly a year into that process, Pastor Susan Haukaas was called to serve as Trinity s next Associate Pastor. We then began a search For there is still a vision for the appointed time (Habakkuk :b-) for a Director of Music Ministries. Robert Murphy will begin his ministry with Trinity in February, joining a staff team that is excited The words are still fresh in our ears. An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. [Matthew :0-] And again, The angel said to Mary, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; about the mission and ministry that lies ahead for Trinity. The second year, we looked out at Trinity s mission and how Trinity relates to the community. My biggest observation from this year of looking out was to recognize that Trinity members hold significant leadership roles in many aspects of community life. Through our members, Trinity is involved in local and state government, education, community safety, health care, grief support, therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. [Luke :5] Angels, messengers of God, speaking and giving clear direction about what is to come. If only everything in our life of faith was that clear. More often than not, my experience THE Bond is published monthly by Trinity Lutheran Church 5 4 th Ave. SE, Jamestown, ND 5840 Telephone (70) 5-84 Fax ( ) trinitylutheranjmst@q.com Web site: has been that a time of preparation and prayerful listening is more likely to lead to a sense of spirit-led direction than just sitting around waiting to see if an angel will appear with something to say. 3 Proposed Amendment to the Constitution regarding Nominating Committee In accordance with the Constitution of Trinity Lutheran Church which states in C7.0 that Amendments to this constitution may be proposed by at least 0 percent of the voting members or by the Congregation Council, the Council recommends the following amendment to the Constitution affecting section C.0 regarding a Nominating Committee: Resolution recommended by Council: Whereas the Nominating Committee and Council have found that continuity from year to year is an asset to the nominating process, and Whereas for several years, the Nominating Committee, Council and Congregation have been operating by electing Nominating Committee members for two year terms, Be it resolved that the Congregation Council recommend that the Constitution of Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, North Dakota, be amended in C.0 to state: A Nominations and Resolutions Committee shall be composed of six voting members of this congregation, two of whom shall be outgoing members of the Congregation Council. These two members shall be elected by the Council and serve for a one year term. Two members shall be elected at the annual meeting and serve for a term of two years. The final two members shall be nominated at the annual meeting on alternate years and serve for a term of two years. The Senior Pastor shall serve as convener. Be it further resolved that this amendment shall become effective February, 07. This Constitutional Amendment will be voted upon at the January 4, 06 Annual Meeting and if approved by a majority, will be placed for a second vote to be ratified without change at the 07 Annual Meeting on a date yet to be determined. Current Constitutional Language: C.0 A Nominating Committee of six voting members of this congregation, two of whom shall be outgoing members of the Congregation Council, shall be elected at the annual meeting for a term of one year. Members of the Nominating Committee are not eligible for consecutive reelection. Before all else fails In Too Busy Not to Pray (InterVarsity Press), Bill Hybels cites reasons that prayers may seem to go unanswered (unconfessed sin, selfishness and so on). The most common cause, though, is prayerlessness: People often tell me how they have attempted to address a pressing need, Hybels writes. They have gone to counselors, read self-help books, claimed biblical promises, practiced self-discipline, confided in Christian friends, practiced assertiveness or submission or self-denial or positive thinking, even read books about prayer and their need is still not met. But when asked if they ve prayed fervently and regularly about the matter, the answer is usually no. James 4: says, You do not have because you do not ask God. So instead of thinking When all else fails, pray, try this: Pray before all else fails. mental health, feeding people, housing, construction, youth and adult sports, music, recreation, visual arts, dance, business development, transportation, communication and so much more. Nearly every aspect of community life is impacted by one or more Trinity members. This year, the preparation and prayerful listening will get legs as we participate more actively in planning for Trinity s future. The Council has recommended that Trinity work with Pastor Keith Zeh from the Eastern North Dakota Synod to engage in a strategic planning process. The formal process will explore the questions: *What is Trinity s purpose in God s mission? *What is Trinity s story? *Who are our neighbors? *Who are we? * How is God calling us to respond? By the end of May, the outcomes we anticipate include: * Articulation of a vision for mission purpose statement for the next two to five years. * - goals that are SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely) and provide steps for living out Trinity s vision and purpose. * Concrete plans which describe how the vision will be actualized and the goals accomplished. * Broad congregational ownership of the vision and action plan. The process will include times for individual and group reflection. A congregational Discovery Team will guide the process and ensure that the congregation has opportunities for active participation. The first step of the process begins in January with a Ministry Site Review. Please plan to attend a Congregational Forum on Sunday, January 7 from 9:45-0:40 am in the Fellowship Hall. Guests from the synod will be at Trinity to listen and to ask questions about Trinity s mission and ministry. The guests are part of a trained Ministry Review Team. The team will also meet with community leaders and get a tour of the community while they are in Jamestown. Later that evening from 6:00-7:0 pm, the congregation is invited to return for a supper and an opportunity to hear preliminary recommendations from the Review Team. A formal written report will be provided to the Council in the weeks following the review day. The report will be a preliminary building block of the strategic planning process that will follow. Preparation. Prayerful listening. Participation in a planning process. May the Holy Spirit reveal through these steps a vision for Trinity for the appointed time ahead. A vision that is, in the words of Habakkuk, plain - so that a runner may read it. A vision that has integrity for Trinity with goals that guide mission and ministry in Jesus name. In Peace, Pastor Kristi Weber 4

My Lord, God and Savior, Immanuel, He; My Prophet, Priest, Sacrifice, Altar and Lamb: Judge, Advocate, Surety and Witness, I AM; My Peace and my Life, my Truth and my Way; My Leader, my Teacher, my Hope and my Stay; Redeemer and Ransom, Atonement and Friend; He s Alpha, Omega, Beginning and End. Rev. John H. Sammis Helping Opportunity Do you know of someone in our church community or broader Jamestown community who could use a pick-me-up in the form of a casserole brought in? Whatever the need, whether illness, bed rest, new baby, loss of job, just out of hospital, or other stress, there are prepared casseroles in the church freezer for just such a need. Just sign them out! Because Trinity already had Trinity Takeout for just such usage, the Transition House offered to supply casseroles (one large or small) each week that school is in session. Supervised preparation of food is one of the life skills training provided at the Transition House and they needed a benevolent outlet for their prepared food. Trinity has both an opportunity and a responsibility to distribute these casseroles to families in stress. 5
