2 Your Word is a Lamp to My Feet Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105 Boxes of Bibles arrive in the church office this time of year. Bibles for 7 th graders beginning confirmation class, Bibles for 3 rd graders, First Bibles with thick board book pages and colorful pictures to be given to infants and toddlers when they are baptized. Why so many Bibles? Because we want children and teens and adults to read them. We want that board book Bible to be read and loved so much that by the time a child is ready for preschool, she is eager to see the big story Bible we have in the preschool classrooms. And by the time a child can read confidently, he has a Bible he can read for himself at home. And when they start confirmation, they can have a study Bible that helps them dig deeper into the stories of the Bible to find ways the Bible connects with their own lives. And for adults, reading the Bible can be a life-long journey. I recently talked with a friend who announced, I m reading Zephaniah. I knew that she began her journey through the Old Testament many months ago. One, two, three chapters a day. She s been working her way through. Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and last is Malachi. She thinks by the end of the next week, she ll have finished reading the Old Testament and will be ready for the New. What happens when my friend and I finish reading the whole Bible? We ll probably read it again. The beauty of the Bible is it can be a life-long companion. As Psalm 119 verse 105 says, Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. I appreciate the light God s Word shines on my path. I want to read more. I want to think about how the Bible connects with my life. This fall, there are a few ways you can be intentional about letting the Word of God shine on your life path. At the 10:45 worship service, we plan to include a series of children s messages that connect the stories of the Old Testament with the images in the windows in the sanctuary. Later in November, you are invited to participate in a Walk through the Old Testament. This is a way to learn a hand motion and a short phrase to help you remember the people and events of the Old Testament. This half-day retreat will be at Trinity and is open to everyone 3 rd grade and older. We ll ask you to register later in September so we know how many to expect. There will be a fee to cover expenses and we ll have scholarships available so everyone who wants to attend can participate. Or follow the lead of my friend and I and pick a book of the Bible that interests you and start reading. A chapter or two a day and before long, you ll have developed a good habit of daily Bible reading walking along the path that God s Word lights for you. In Peace, Pastor Kristi Weber My approach is a bit different. I started more than a year ago with the Prophets, then Psalms, then Proverbs and the other wisdom books. Then I jumped to the Gospels and Letters. Back to History. Now I m reading the first 5 books of the Old Testament. I m slowed down in Leviticus for now, but because I know I ve read most of the rest of the Bible, I m going to stick with it. 2

3 Report on CAR, Our Companion Synod Though sporadic violence is still a danger, normalcy is returning to the Central African Republic, according to Willie and Ann Langdji, long term missionaries in Africa who spoke at Our Savior s Lutheran in Valley City, one of their sponsoring churches. Accompanied by its ELCA partners and World Hunger, the Lutheran Church of the CAR is making a great impact in education, health, food, clean water, and housing. During the conflict, homes had been destroyed, schools and fields abandoned, and medical clinics largely dysfunctional. The Langdjis are regional missionary supervisors of the ELCA mission work in Madagascar and several countries in western and central Africa where the ELCA accompanies local Lutheran churches. All that is currently needed are: blunt school scissors 70-sheet notebooks (8x 10½). Roof Report Trinity s roof and steeple sustained wind damage earlier this summer. An insurance claim was filed and proceeds from the settlement will be used to replace the sanctuary roof and steeple in the coming weeks. While the workers are here, repairs will be made to the two flat roofs. Funds from the Roof Repair Fund will be used to pay for those repairs. The estimate for a total replacement of the flat roof over the education wing on the southeast part of the building exceeded $27,000. For now, essential repairs to this section of the roof will be made. Expect that requests for funds will be part of financial planning for 2019 so that a more lasting replacement of this roof can be completed next year. Thank you for your patience and support as these projects take place. Save the Date... Trinity Fall Bazaar Saturday, Oct. 13 5

Trinity Connection Close-Up Boy Scouts + Computer Upgrades = A New Computer Lab for Faith Quest Ten years ago, Dillon Shaffer was a preschooler as Trinity began a shift to a rotation based model for Sunday School. Younger children like Dillon heard Bible stories in the newly decorated Stepping Stones Play Center and were invited to play and make crafts that connected with the story of the day. As Dillon got older, he was able to interact with the same Bible story for several weeks in a row. One week, he d make and eat food in the kitchen classroom. Another week, he d put on a costume and act out the story. And he loved when it was his turn to go to the computer lab and learn about the lesson with the computers. Ten years is a long time in the life of a young boy and even longer in the life of a computer. Dillon is now in high school and is working on his Eagle Scout project. This has been a perfect match. Dillon s project is to update the Faith Quest computer lab to continue inspiring the children who are in elementary school. The new computers are set up. Soon new tables and benches, just the right size for 1 st -5 th graders, will be in place. Funding for this project came from gifts to the Connect Share Grow campaign and from memorial gifts given in memory of Darold Schmuhl, a beloved IT staff member in the Jamestown Public Schools.
