2 500 Years of Living Lutheran followed are often viewed as the start of the Reformations of the Christian Church in Western Europe. As Lutherans in the United States, we join our brothers and sisters in faith around the world as the 500 th anniversary of this beginning is observed. On October 31, Christians are called to love and serve our neighbors. 1517, a Catholic priest It is common for Luther to quote the Bible once or and Bible professor named twice every paragraph throughout an essay. 33 different Martin Luther posted 95 Biblical quotes are part of his 20 page essay, statements that he wanted Whether One May Flee From a Deadly to discuss. That action Plague (1527) Luther wrote in response to a question he and the conversations that received. This I well know, that if it were Christ or At Trinity, the last Sunday of October is noted not only as Reformation Sunday, but also as Confirmation Sunday, when 10 th graders Affirm their Baptisms (are Confirmed). This year is marks the 500 th year since Martin Luther s words sparked the Lutheran Reformation. We ve been observing this anniversary by walking to Wittenberg, hearing Luther Moments in worship, studying Luther s catechism By Heart, and in many other ways noted on pages 8&9. This month, I m highlighting what Living Lutheran looks like as we make ethical decisions. Recently, I ve been re-reading some of Luther s writings. I am continually reminded of how central Luther s reliance on the Bible is as he writes, particularly about ethical issues such as how his mother who were laid low by illness, For by grace you have everybody would be so solicitous and been saved, and this is would gladly become a servant or helper. not your own doing; it is And yet they don t hear what Christ himself the gift of God. says, As you did to one of the least, you Ephesians 2:8 did it to me [Matt. 25:40]. 2 Living Lutheran in ethical decisions includes a deep care and concern for the well-being of neighbors who live nearby and far away. It includes a comprehensive reading of the Bible. This type of writing is found in ELCA Social Statements on a variety of topics: Environment (1993), Health (2003), Race, Ethnicity and Culture (1993), and many more. Biblical references are prevalent in the social statements and root ethical decision-making in Christian faith and life. (To read more go to elca.org then search faith and society, social statements.) As we join in the observance of the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation, we are part of a legacy of Living Lutheran in how we love and serve our neighbors. In Peace, Pastor Kristi Weber

Sunday, October 15 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. Trinity's second set of goals of the Connect Share Grow campaign enhances mission and ministry by donating 10% of gifts received. Trinity s first recipient of a grant is ELCA Disability Ministries. These ministries include intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental illness, deaf and visual impairment ministries. In August our congregation gave $25,000 to ELCA Disability Ministries. This doubled their fundraising for the current 5 year campaign. We helped them Grow! To learn how they'll use the money attend the services on October 15 when Pastor Ron Glusenkamp, Director of Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA, will share a message about the impact your giving. If you have driven or walked in the alley east of the Church, you may have noticed a fresh coat of stain has been applied to the wood fence. Thank you to the Men of Trinity for purchasing the stain and to the volunteers who helped with this project. The volunteers were: Mark Olson, Tom Olson, Clint Tompt, Laurel Haroldson, Bob and Laine Toso, Jon and Peggy Schlenker, and Randy and Colleen Lebahn. The fence looks great! 7 GOD Squad GOD Squad is High School spiritual development time that happens in the Youth Room on Sundays. All high schoolers are invited to attend. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God. ~Ephesians 2:8 Grace is a foundational and distinctive piece of our faith. This gift, undeserved and freely given, changes lives and perspectives as people realize they are enough because of what Christ has done and that they are called into the world to serve their neighbor and share the good news. This changes Everything! Our Youth desire: Someone to become Somewhere to belong and Something to do [that changes the world] Ultimately, we want our youth to understand the fierce love that God has for them, just as they are, and that by grace, through faith, they have been saved. When young people (or really any age person!) truly claim this reality, it indeed changes everything. We look forward to diving deeply into this theme with you in the months to come! NOTES; GOD Squad begins October 8. No GOD Squad October 22 due to Confirmation Banquet PULSE Sunday mornings 9:30-10:30 Youth Room Sunday Morning programming for 6th-9th graders. This year s theme, This Changes Everything, will help us focus on the gift of GRACE and the fierce love that God has for each of us. In September we had great conversations about Grace and Forgiveness. We learned how a single set of events, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, changed mankind for all time. As we observe the 500 th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation in October, the youth and I will be talking and learning more about Martin Luther. Martin Luther was a German monk who began the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, becoming one of the most influential and controversial figures in Christian history. Note: No PULSE on Sunday October 22 Youth Night Out Friday October 27, 6:00 pm Jamestown High School Blue Jays vs Dickinson Join us at JHS at 6:00 to support the Blue Jay Volleyball Team.
