2 Dear Parishioners, May 13 th has been a mysterious day. We do not need to believe in reported apparitions of Mary. The Catholic Church proclaims a very small percentage of them worthy of belief. Fatima is one such apparition. May 13, Shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal Francisco and his sister Jacinta and their cousin Lucia (who became a Carmelite Religious Sister)-- reported seeing a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary which occurred monthly on that date through October 13, May 13, 1981 Mehmet Ali Agca, a Turkish assassin fired 4 shots at Pope John Paul II as he pass through St. Peter s Square greeting pilgrims in an open car. One shot hit the pope in the abdomen, narrowly missing vital organs while another hit his left hand. May 13, 1982 Pope John Paul II returns to Fatima 1 year after the assignation attempt on his life. The pope credits the Virgin Mary with protecting his life in the 1981 shooting. December 27, 1983 Pope John Paul II visited Mehmet Ali Agca in prison offering his forgiveness to his would -be assailant May, Pope John Paul II makes his 3 rd trip to Fatima, beatifying Francisco & Jancita. The Vatican reveals that the third of the 3 secrets entrusted to the Fatima children visionaries foretold the 1981 attempt on the pope s life. May 13, 2017 Pope Francis will be in Fatima Portugal to canonize the Francisco & Jancita who died at the age of 11 and 10, respectively, the youngest non-martyr canonized saints. At Fatima Mary calls us to penance, prayers & devotion to her Immaculate Heart (rosary-center.org): PENANCE: "Many persons,"sr. Lucia explained, "feeling that the word penance implies great austerities, and not feeling that they have the strength for great sacrifices, become discouraged and continue a life of lukewarmness and sin."then she said Our Lord explained to her: "The sacrifice required of every person is the fulfillment of his duties in life and the observance of My law. So central is the Rosary to the Fatima message that Our Lady chose to identify herself as "The Lady of the Rosary."In each of the six apparitions she asked for the daily Rosary, and especially as an instrument of world peace. Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary: In the second apparition the following year (June 13) Our Lady let the children know that "Jesus wishes to establish throughout the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart."Several times in the June and July apparitions Our Lady spoke of this devotion, as we shall see; and soon there began to burn in their hearts (especially Jacinta's) a deep love for the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
