2 We should not stay away from our assembly, as is the custom of some, but encourage one another Hebrews 10:25 Dear Parishioners, The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary is December 8 th. This is a Holy Day of Obligation, which means that attendance at Mass is obligatory for all those who are physically able to attend. Missing Mass on a Holy Day of Obligation, including Sunday (which is AL- WAYS a day of obligation), is a serious matter, and to deliberately miss Mass on such a day without a truly compelling reason is seriously sinful. We will have Mass Friday, December 7 th at 6:45pm and Saturday, December 8 th at 9am-both at Ascension. The rules regarding Holy Days of Obligation can be confusing. Here in the United States, the following days are ALWAYS Holy Days of Obligation December 8 (our Patronal Feast Day as a Nation), December 25, and every Sunday. The following days are Holy Days of Obligation when they do not fall on Saturday or Monday: January 1 (The Mother of God), August 15 (Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary), and November 1 (All Saints). When these dates DO fall on a Saturday or Monday, there is no need to attend Mass those days, though every Christian is encouraged to do so regardless. Why in the world does the Church, our mother, care so much about gathering her children for Mass on days other than Sunday? First of all, the Church desires to bring her children into contact with the saving mysteries of salvation as often as possible. On the natural level, it s akin to our mother telling us to get enough sleep, eat our vegetables and to shower. Attending and participating in Mass is simply good for us. But there is also the fact that when we gather to celebrate the Mass, we are gathering as family. And just as in natural families there are days and times set aside to celebrate and to gather, most notably on birthdays or important anniversaries, as well as major holidays like Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving, so too in the Church there are days set aside to be together as a spiritual household, and to gather around the Table of the Lord to receive the Bread from Heaven. Frankly, it s not always easy or pleasant to gather with family. Sometimes it stretches us and demands something of us. But this does not mean it is not good to gather. We had a well announced (at Mass & in bulletins) Reader training Sept. 18th and an EMHC training Sept. 25th for both new and current ministers. Disappointingly, this resulted in no new EMHC at either parish and only 2 new Readers at one parish. Is God calling you to one of these ministries? If you think so, Ascension Parishioners can call Jean Schmitz and St. Bernard Parishioners can call Victoria Arnst for EMHC and Fr. Gregory for Readers. Unburden Yourself We will be offering an Evening of Reconciliation for both parishes at St. Bernard Church on Wednesday, December 12 th from 5-8:00pm. Three priests (2 plus Fr. Gregory) will be available for the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation for our faith formation students and families and parishioners. The students will begin coming about 6:40pm. Encounter the JOY OF GOD S MERCY in this sacrament

3 Church of the Ascension Norwood Young America, MN November is Food Shelf Drive month. During November, we are promoting donations to the West Carver Food shelf. Let s make it a great month of donations for those in need for the Holidays! Every item is greatly appreciated. (non-perishable foods, paper products, diapers, etc.) Donations can be dropped off in the church entry at Ascension. Thank you. STEWARDSHIP - Ascension & St. Bernard's In THANKSGIVING to God for all His gifts to us. In THANKSGIVING to All who volunteer their participation, generosity and prayer to our parishes. Immaculate Conception Masses: Masses for our Holy Day of Opportunity will be held on Fri, Dec 7 th at 6:45 pm at Ascension. There will be no morning Mass that that day. And on Sat., Dec 8 th at 9 am at Ascension hosted by St. Bernard. Thank You!! Thank you for expressing your missionary spirit by offering gifts of support during World Mission Sunday. Ascension collected $1065 to help bring good news to small, young and often poor mission dioceses worldwide Witnessing Faith through the Hearts of the Youth. Thank you also for your generosity in helping those who have been impacted by the hurricanes and other natural disasters throughout our country. Ascension collected $335 for the Archdiocese s special collection for the 2018 Disasters request. Gifts for Baby Jesus: The Respect for Life group will be collecting Gifts for Baby Jesus during Advent again this year. Items especially needed include baby items, diapers, socks, and winter clothing (can be gently used) for infants and toddlers up to 18 mo. Items can be brought to Ascension and left by the Mary altar. Thank you to all who contributed to Ascension s Thanksgiving display. A special thanks goes to Gemma Floral for the fresh floral arrangements on the high altar, the Jerome Pieper family for the straw and the Robert Schmitt family for the pumpkins. Your generosity has added a special blessing to our worship experience. Knights of Columbus Breakfast: The KC s will be serving breakfast on Sunday, Dec. 2 nd from 8am to noon in the Ascension Social Hall. Yum, yum...ham, sausage, French toast, pancakes and applesauce. Please join us for a wonderful fellowship and good food. Proceeds will go to support the St. Bernard and Ascension Faith Formation program. ALL WEEKDAY MASSES ARE IN THE NAR- THEX. ADORATION IN THE ST. ANNE S ROOM. West Carver County Food Shelf As you are doing your Christmas grocery shopping keep in mind the Food Shelf. The following items are needed: Peanut Butter, tuna, Canned meats, Canned Vegetables especially peas and canned fruits, Canned soups, Meal-in-one dinners, Jell-O, Laundry soap, dish soap, Hand soap, Shampoo, conditioner, tooth paste, tooth brushes, toilet paper, paper towels, & Kleenex. Items can be put in the box to the right of the church entrance. Cologne Area Senior Citizens The 2018 Holiday Luncheon is being held on Tuesday, December 4th at the Cologne Community Center.
