2 My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I cannot begin to express how exited I am to be back in the parish from my summer vacation. Though I do not know if I could call the summer a vacation. (Haha!) It was a vacation from school work, however, I experienced that having three different summer assignments presents some work of it s own! In all three of these assignments Our Lord was drawing me into a deeper relationship with him and with my fellow brothers and sisters. In my chaplain internship and parish assignment, the Lord placed with me a strong desire to be present with his people. In my last assignment, I had the opportunity to run the vocation camps that my diocese has. It was a blessing providing these young people with the tools necessary to help them discern their call from God. After the summer assignments were over at the end of July I gathered with my brothers for our annual seminarian retreat. This year the retreat was given by Father Brett Brannon: a priest from the Diocese of Savanna, Georgia. Father Brannon is the author of To Save a Thousand Souls. His book explains what the seminary is, the formation process, and some testimonies on the priesthood. One of the biggest take a ways I had from this retreat was that the main role of the priest is to pray! He stated that, If you are not praying as a priest, then you should not take your pay check. After the retreat I had a week with my family before I had to be back at the Seminary for a week-long class in rural ministry. This class introduced us to the issues that we might encounter if we are assigned to a rural parish. I returned to St. Paul at the beginning of September to begin my second year of theological studies. This semester we are studying Moral Theology, Ecclesiology (the study of the Church), Canon Law, Homiletics, and the Holy Eucharist. In the future I will have the chance to write about some of the topics we are discussing in these classes for the bulletin. Finally, my focus this year at St. Bernard s and Ascension will be assisting in the Edge program and participating in the Catholic Watch Men on Saturday mornings of teaching parish weekend. Indeed, we as parishes are family. Prayer bonds a family together. The Mass is the most profound family prayer. The rosary prepares us to enter more fully into the Mass as we insert ourselves into the maternal heart of Mary and she introduces us to a deeper relationship with her Son. This October our family rosary is for the healing of our family and all who have been wounded by the clergy sexual abuse scandal.

3 Church of the Ascension Norwood Young America, MN Appalachia Christmas Project 2018 Ascension will be participating in the Appalachia Christmas Project, sponsored by the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women. We will collect new items now through Oct 28. A box will be placed in the church entry for donations. This may be the last year of participating in this project. This is an opportunity to consider other mission outreach projects. For any further information phone Sue at Father on retreat: Fr. If this ring belongs to you, please call the parish office at It s TURKEY BINGO time Ascension's Catholic United Financial is sponsoring our annual Turkey Bingo" on Sunday, Nov. 4 from 1:00-3: games of bingo will be played. 15 games for turkeys and 5 cash games. Drawings will be held between games for prizes. Concessions will be available. Proceeds benefit Ascension's Faith Formation program. Volunteers Needed: Volunteers are needed at Ascension before and after funeral Masses to assist those who may need to use the elevator. We would like to have a list of many volunteers to be able to call on so that we can be assured of having someone assisting at each funeral. Archdiocesan Youth Day 2018 Saturday, October 27, at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium RiverCentre, St. Paul High school youth are invited to AYD18. Teens will have breakout sessions with Sister Bethany Madonna, Sons of Thunder and Nick Redd; participate in a service project, attend Mass, and listen to great music from Sonar. We had great attendance--with many non-parishioners, good fellowship, delicious chili with a chicken chili option along with chicken soup, and Hot Dogs, lots of luscious desserts. Please ascensionusher@gmail.com or call with the dates and times you would be available Men Altar Servers: Beginning in November adult (18 and up) male altar servers will be serving Sunday (Sat. evening) Masses on the 1 st Sunday of each month. We are grateful that we are blessed with women who serve as EMHCs and Readers and other liturgical roles--they do so in numbers greater than men. It is healthy for a parish to also witness laymen leading prayer. Since the men will be wearing server albs and carrying items up and down the sanctuary steps they must have good balance/stability. The training session for both Ascension and St. Bernard men will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27th at 6pm OR Sunday, Oct. 28 th at 11am BOTH AT ASCENSION. Sunday Masses during St. Bernard Beautification Project: St. Bernard Church interior will be undergoing a beautification process Oct.8 through Dec. 14, ALL SUNDAY MASS- ES DURING THIS TIME WILL BE HELD AT ASCEN- SION.
