3 Pastoral Letter Dear friends Although Lent is liturgically the time the Church prepares for the great celebration of Christ s triumph over death, traditionally it s the time for giving something up. Even for those who don t regularly attend church, we often hear, I ve given up this, that, or the other for Lent whether it be chocolate, crisps, cheese or wine. It s intended to be a penance for our conscious or unconscious propensity to go our own way rather than God s, but it can become a tag for just going on a diet, putting right all the wrong choices and late night snacks we vowed we wouldn t fall prey to in our New Year s resolutions. Some people prefer to take something on instead of giving something up. That can mean anything from going to the gym or reading a good book every week. It might even mean reading a devotional book. You ll have to make up your own mind what you want to give up or take on, but here are some suggestions for making a real difference, spiritually. Eating healthily, exercising moderately and reading instead of watching TV are only going to make a difference to your shape and concentration. One year I took up reading a particularly challenging book. I remember little about it except for one thing: the suggestion to give up complaining. When we give up chocolate, what s the first thing we crave? Yes, it s chocolate, of course. The same applied to complaining, and I soon realised just how much I was doing it! How about forsaking gossiping or being dismissive? If you d rather take something on, then how about reading the Bible or attending our Lent course? Short on time? Well then, my latest discovery for busy people is the App, Pray as you go. It s free and lasts for about 10 minutes. There s no reading, just a few moments to reflect with some helpful pointers and beautifully chosen music. Or maybe you need some help with your spiritual journey? This is what I m here for. How about taking an hour out of the 6 weeks of Lent and chatting about where you are, spiritually? How about taking up the challenge and doing Lent a little differently for the sake of your soul? Every blessing for a fruitful and fulfilling Lent. Maggie 2

5 Letter from our new curate, Dr. Jacky Barr To the United Parish of Chinnor New adventures often begin with a mixture of excitement and a little nervous anticipation, and that is how I m feeling about serving my curacy with you. As the studying part of my ordination training is coming to an end, I am looking forward to being able to enact and embody my calling to serve Christ, and his Church, by serving you. One of the things that attracted me to Chinnor is the range of different services that are undertaken across the parish this is a situation I m used to as I ve always split my worship between two churches in Newbury, and I find it easy, and interesting, to move between different styles of church service. I think I will gain an almost unique breadth of experience by coming to you. Its also reassuring for me that Maggie also trained at Cuddesdon, and I m sure that we will find even more common ground than we have done already. I m really looking forward to the on-the-job practical training beginning. Becoming a priest is not something that I could have predicted for myself! My first career was as a research scientist for the Medical Research Council at Harwell. Then having the children necessitated a career break and after that, I didn t go back to science, I became a gym instructor working with people referred by the GP to the gym for specific health reasons. It was in this work that I realised how fascinated I am by other people s stories. Fourteen years ago I started to practise yoga and then became a yoga teacher and that has been my main job for the last 10 years. I ve specialised in teaching children (the youngest being 3 years old) and the more senior end of the spectrum (the oldest person I ve taught was 98!). The yoga was actually the start of my spiritual journey that eventually led to Christ. And here I am now, looking forward to being ordained on 1 st July! A big part of who I am is being mother to my three daughters. As I arrive in Chinnor, I will be in the new and slightly odd situation of all of them being half in, half out of the nest. The eldest, Heather, is already at university and will be beginning her third year, Zoe will be heading to University for her first year in October, and Abbey will be finishing her last year of sixth form in Newbury during the week, and spending the weekends and holidays with me. I m looking forward to meeting you all and getting this exciting curacy underway. With Love and Light Jacky 4

16 Parish News LENT APPEAL 2017: WATERAID Jars of Change URGENT NEWSFLASH! From 1 st March you will have to fetch all your water from Kingston Blount and you must walk there to collect it! This is the daily walk which millions of people in some of the World s poorest countries face in order to live. The nearest experience we have had to this was when, recently, we had a burst water main in Kingston Blount and many people in the area woke up to just a trickle of water from their taps one morning. This was an inconvenience but we were quickly reassured that it was only temporary and the supply was restored the same day. Thames Water even called to test our tap water on two occasions to ensure it was fully back to normal quality. Imagine if we had actually had to fetch all the water we needed for even a few days. Imagine that the water wasn t even clean and could easily make us seriously ill The Giving Committee is asking you to support WaterAid through our Lent Appeal this year WaterAid s appeal aims to help bring clean, safe water to rural communities in some of the world s poorest countries such as Madagascar, where children like 8-year-old Neny, from Tsarafangitra village, have to make long and difficult journeys to fetch unsafe water from a pond up to four times a day. What are we asking you to do? We would like all your small change please!(and larger change too if you can) From the beginning of Lent you will find jam jars available in all of the churches, together with Jars of Change sleeves and leaflets. Just help yourself to a jar (or please use one you have at home). During Lent just fill up your jar with all your spare change the more the better - it couldn t be easier. After Easter, ideally please count the money you have raised and return a cheque (made payable to WaterAid) for this amount to the Church Office or to Chris Foote, 33 Mill Lane please Gift Aid your donation using the slip printed on the back of the sleeve. If you can t do this, then please return your filled jar to Chris or to the Church Office. Last year we raised an amazing for Toilet Twinning we can beat that total this year with your help! Thank you Chris Foote & the Giving Group (Chris tel no or chrisfoote33@btinternet.com) 15
