4 Dear friends Pastoral Letter Jacky and I attended the Diocesan Clergy Conference last week and we thought you may like to here just a little of what went on. Jacky - Intially the idea of a conference with 300+ clergy was a daunting one but when I arrived, it dawned on me oh yes, I am one of them! so the conference as a whole did serve to further strengthen and confirm my identity as an ordained minister. Of the talks that I went to, I was particularly struck by the clarity of Rachel Mash. She spoke about how we have lost the theology of creation, and that its been over taken by a focus on the theology of redemption. Rachel pointed out the first commandment was actually to take care of the Earth and a lovely phrase she used was that nature contains God s fingerprints. Each morning, Bishop Steven discussed a different passage from the book of Colossians. This was very instructive as this is a letter I wasn t particularly familiar with. There is a focus on thanksgiving in this letter and the Bishop pointed out that to live a truly Eucharistic life is to live a life of thanksgiving, that this is what we are called to do before anything else. And from that attitude of gratitude, God s grace can then flow to and through us. Maggie - This was a week absolutely crammed with stimulating talks, workshops and worship, all focussing on +Steven s 3 Cs: contemplation, courage and compassion. For all of us, we ll be taking away some ideas for our parishes and also things for our own personal development. Rachel Mash spoke passionately about creation and for a Parish that s aiming to be green and eco-friendly, it was affirming to hear an expert speaking on the very things we discuss and implement at Chinnor Churches Go Wild, but more than that, she described global warming in metaphorical terms as the Titanic. The earth is heading for an iceberg (she estimates within 5 years) and we ll either scrape the sides of the ship or steer directly into disaster. We have to make a response at the individual and corporate level and we have to do it now. Archbishop Angaelos (of the Coptic Church) spoke about raising awareness of the persecuted Church. This can often pass us by because we don t experience this in extreme form in this country. He is a quiet and humble man and by the end of the session, most of us were ready to have a cross tatooed on our wrists in solidarity with our brothers and sisters who fear even the walk to church. Loretta Minghella challenged us to be more compassionate. With so, so much to concern us in a suffering world, and with so much on our doorstep, I for one can feel overwhelmed and unsure of even how to pray for every situation where suffering is reported. With television showing us suffering on a daily basis, we perhaps become 3
5 hardened and immune to it. Loretta spoke so calmly and courageously about her own stories of suffering and several others which she had found herself working with, that the sound in the room wasn t that of being able to hear a pin drop, rather it was the sound of the stifled sobs of 320 clergy. All 320 preferences of worship seemed to be catered for. The mix was high and low, Taize, plainchant, worship songs, traditional hymns, pointed psalms, metrical psalms. We sang in English, Setswana and Latin and sat alongside delegates not just from Oxford, but also from the link dioceses of Kimberley and Kuruman, Växjö and Southern India. Our prayer groups reflected the breadth of the Anglican Communion and with senior clergy also participating, there was a refreshing lack of clericalism. At a personal level, some were challenged to learn circus skills, some abseilled, some had improvised music played for them, some learnt how to laugh more. God really did seem to be speaking to us all through that was on offer, through all the chance encounters with old friends and new and through the times of quiet on prayer walks, in the chapel and in the labyrinth. No doubt our experiences will gradually unfold in our sermons, our small groups and in our conversations with all of you. Every blessing Maggie PS: One outcome of the clergy conference is that Jacky & I are regularly saying the General Thanksgiving together, if you would like to join us from your own home here it is: Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you most humble and hearty thanks for all your goodness and loving kindness, We bless you for our creation, preservation and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And give us, we pray, such a sense of all your mercies that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but with our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, for ever and ever. Amen 4

11 Parish News So that s what happens at a Wine Tasting! As relative newcomers to Chinnor and St. Andrew s, I saw with interest the advertisement for the Wine Tasting evening at the Rectory, last month. My husband Bob and I set off at the specified time, with Bob on his Mobility Scooter, to get used to riding it to the area of Chinnor Village Centre (we ve found lunches there are great but parking a challenge!), whilst I got some, much needed, exercise, and trotted along behind him. Maggie welcomed us as we arrived and it was lovely to be shown into the spacious kitchen laid out with Mysterious wine bottles all wrapped in brown paper, but also inviting bowls and plates of nibbles! Maggie introduced us to Richard, and our lovely curate Jackie who was also there, but most of the rest of those attending were new names and faces to us. We all introduced ourselves around the room and it became a How long have you lived in Chinnor? exercise, with us at 6 months, the newest, and the longest was over 50 years! Can I apologise now to all those people I met whose names I can no longer remember. If you meet me in Church or in the village please remind me we shared Mystery wine together! Once the introductions were over Grace and Maggie explained the format of the evening. We were all served a small amount of an unknown red wine then Maggie, Grace and Richard each read out three different descriptions of a wine. We then tasted our wine (some very expertly regular Wine Club members while we just sipped and looked at the colour!) and using our judgement (or guesswork!) we then had decide which description actually applied to the Mystery wine. The three descriptions were repeated to allow us another chance to think and then we wrote down the number on our Answer Sheet. We were regularly reminded which nibbles went best with that type of wine I didn t know chocolate went well with red wine until Maggie told us perfect combination to my mind! Having done Red 1 we went on and repeated the process with Red 2, then after a break for chat with others that we were getting to know, and sampling more nibbles. We then had another chance to buy raffle tickets before we went onto repeat the process for White 1 and White 2. Finally, whilst we were drinking more of whichever wine we preferred or just drinking more as it seemed a waste not to drink it! Grace gave us the correct answers for each wine. There was a tie for first prize so Grace organised a Tie Breaker and a prize was presented. Maggie then organised the drawing of raffle tickets for which the prizes were all wine related. Many thanks to Grace who organised the evening and to Maggie and Richard for hosting us. 10

14 Parish News Lent Appeal The Giving Group are pleased to announce that a final total of has now been sent to Crisis for the Oxford Centre, which is a really great result; there will be some Gift Aid to add but I don't have an amount for that. I have had a letter acknowledging our donation of which the following is an extract: "In Oxfordshire, significant cuts to services, a lack of affordable housing, ever increasing rents, and recent benefit changes are all contributing to rising homelessness. Every year we are seeing more people at our Skylight service and the devastating impact that homelessness can have on people's lives. Thank you so much for your support." Thank you to everyone who has returned collection boxes - I am aware they were not the most robust we've been given and caused some difficulties but nevertheless it has been a really great response. Chris Foote Chair of the Giving Group Shirley and Ken s Coffee Morning A big, big thank you to everyone who supported our Coffee Morning, on Saturday 12 th May. We raised a staggering 515. It is an amazing amount of money raised by the generosity of our friends and family and we are truly grateful. Many thanks, Shirley and Ken Munday 13
