Novena Services: Miraculous Medal Novena and the Saint Teresa Novena, with veneration of the relic of Saint Teresa, every Monday following the 8:30 am Mass. Baptisms: Every Sunday of the month 1:30 pm following the 12:30 pm Mass. Parents are asked to contact the rectory and schedule an appointment with one of the parish priests to make arrangements for the celebration of the Sacrament and to register for the Baptism preparation class. Marriages: Please contact the rectory at least one year in advance of the wedding to schedule an appointment with one of the parish priests. Participation in the Marriage Preparation Program offered by the Archdiocese of New York, along with Natural Family Planning classes, is required. To register for Marriage Preparation sessions, contact the Family Life / Respect Life website at Parish Membership: New parishioners are warmly welcomed. 3 March 25, 2018 Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, On this Palm Sunday, I want to thank you for your thoughtful generosity throughout the year, and also thank you in advance for your special contribution to our parish on Easter. This has traditionally been the second largest collection of the year for our church, reflecting the historical importance of the Lord's resurrection - and the spiritual importance for us and our families of having a church to worship in. Saint Teresa Parish was begin in 1926 by confident and loyal people with faith and commitment, and it continues to this day thanks to the presence and the support of many good people with those same qualities. We have a few more days of Lent before we can celebrate Easter which is a symbol of our journey through this earthly life towards a longed-for welcome and entrance into the kingdom of heaven. The full official title for today is: Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. We begin each Mass with a reading of the Holy Gospel about the welcome of the city crowds when Jesus arrives in Jerusalem. But then we hear about the suffering of Jesus, and his crucifixion and death on the cross. The crowds were anticipating Jesus being a challenge to the status quo. They were right, but wrong. Jesus is the Messiah - but he is not an earthly king. He is more than that but we need to decide and demonstrate how well we will share his life. A schedule of confessions, Holy Week services and Easter Masses is inside. Please note some highlights: * Tomorrow is RECONCILIATION MONDAY. Everyone knows that my sins turn me away from God and builds walls between me and God, and me and other people. Sin deadens consciences and darkens our view of life. Sin saps our happiness and gets us to doubt our worthiness and forgive-ability. On Monday, strike a blow for freedom and be assured of God's love by confessing your sins and receiving absolution in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We ll be waiting between the hours of 3pm and 9pm. And you have two other chances this week: Good Friday and Holy Saturday, from noon to 1pm each day. * On Holy Thursday night at 7:30pm, we have the Mass of the Lord's Supper with the special element of the washing of feet in commemoration of what Jesus did for the apostles. (We welcome volunteers - men and women and children to take the part of the apostles - so call me early this week if you want to be among the twelve.) And at the end of the Mass, we have a Eucharistic Procession around the church, and the placing of the Blessed Sacrament in a repository for adoration the rest of he night. Our church will be open until 11pm for your private prayers and adoration. * The first highlight of Good Friday is the service at 3pm, when we remember the suffering and death of Jesus by the reading of his holy Passion, and by everyone coming forward to venerate a crucifix. We also have the privilege of receiving Holy Communion at this service. Then at 7:30pm, we will again make the Stations of the Cross in church, followed by a procession to the auditorium to lay a statue of Jesus in a "tomb." * On Easter weekend, our Mass schedule has several changes. On Saturday, there is no 4pm Mass. Come instead at 8pm for the great Easter Vigil and Mass. On Sunday, we have Masses at 7:30am, 10:00, 11:15, and 12:30pm. And we have two Masses at 9:30 and 10:30 at St. Nicholas Chapel. The 11:15 is an extra oppotunity, added for Easter Sunday. 12:30 is the last Mass of Easter for us; there is no 5:00pm Mass. I hope that everyone will try to experience these great days of Holy Week. If you have to pick and choose, and want to be at the most important, come to the 7:30 Mass on Holy Thursday, the 3pm Service on Good Friday, and the 8pm Mass on Holy Saturday. Finally, you really might want to make time to go see the new movie PAUL THE APOSTLE. I saw it on Tuesday with other priests and a large crowd of Staten Islanders at the Regal theater on Forest Avenue, where it continues to play. 4 Church of Saint Teresa of the Infant Jesus and St. Nicholas Chapel Staten Island, NY MONDAY MARCH 26 IS RECONCILIATION MONDAY COME FOR CONFESSION FROM 3PM TO 9PM PRIESTS WILL BE WAITING FOR YOU This Monday March 26, we priests will be in church from 3pm to 9pm to help everyone who wants to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confession is good for the soul and for peace of mind. We will have helpful papers and copies of the Act of Contrition for easy use. Confessions are offered every Saturday from 12 to 1 and this week on Good Friday and Holy Saturday from 12 to 1. - GOOD FRIDAY FAST AND ABSTINENCE To call to mind and to consciously share in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross, all of us 14 and older should abstain from meat on Good Friday, and also reduce the amount of food we eat on that solemn day. St. Teresa s Religious Education Program is looking for more good people who would be interested in serving God by volunteering to teach in our Religious Education Program. Classes are held on Tuesdays from 4PM-5:30PM September through May. You will get lots of satisfaction and support! Suggested donation of $15. We will display the names of all prominently on Easter on the bulletin boards at both our church and chapel. To have the list made on time, we need to receive your name and offering by Monday noontime. PRAYER FOR THIS HOLY WEEK That we will try to make each day this week special and inspiring, by coming to church and sharing the ceremonies that commemorate the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, let us pray... We have been informed by the Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese that Governor Cuomo included a radical bill, called S.7511, in his state budget that would allow abortions for any reason during all nine months of pregnancy. His plan eliminates virtually all limitations on abortion of babies in the womb. It would empower non-doctors to do abortions, and even permit a baby born alive after an abortion to die of neglect and starvation. We know that all this sounds incredible, but it is really being pushed in Albany. The key is the State Senate. The budget is supposed to be settled by April 1. If you want to express your opinion you can call Governor Cuomo s office at Our Senator Andrew Lanza strongly opposes this expansion of abortion. 5 Church of Saint Teresa of the Infant Jesus and St. Nicholas Chapel Staten Island, NY 2018 HOLY WEEK SCHEDULE AT SAINT TERESA CHURCH RECONCILIATION MONDAY Priests will be hearing confessions from 3:00pm to 9:00pm in St. Teresa Church so that many people will have the chance to go to confession during Holy Week HOLY THURSDAY At 8:30am, everyone is invited to MORNING PRAYER OF THE CHURCH. At 12 Noon, a Mass without music will be offered for those who cannot come to the main celebration which is the Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper at 7:30pm Lent ends and the great Three Days of the Death and Resurrection of the Lord begin with the Mass of the Lord's Supper at 7:30pm. This Mass includes the Washing of Feet of twelve persons, and a procession around the church carrying the Blessed Sacrament. The church will be open until 11PM for adoration. GOOD FRIDAY At 8:30am, everyone is invited to MORNING PRAYER OF THE CHURCH. From 12 noon to 1pm, confessions will be heard. At 1pm, we have Stations of the Cross. At 3pm, we begin the day's most important and solemn service: the Commemoration of the Lord's Passion and Death. including veneration of the cross and distribution of Holy Communion. At 7:30pm, we will have Stations of the Cross and a solemn candlelight procession from the church to a "tomb" in Conran Hall HOLY SATURDAY At 8:30am, everyone is invited to MORNING PRAYER OF THE CHURCH. From 12 noon to 1:00, confessions will be heard. No Mass is allowed to be said on Holy Saturday until dark, so there is no 4pm Mass. At 8pm, we begin the Mass of Masses - the Solemn Vigil Mass of the Lord's Resurrection which includes the Lighting of the Easter Candle and the celebration of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion EASTER SUNDAY - APRIL 1 Masses will be offered in St. Teresa Church at 7:30, 10:00, 11:15, 12:30. Masses at St. Nicholas Chapel will be offered at 9:30 and 10:30. (Please note: we are adding a Mass at 11:15. Our last Easter Mass is 12:30.) - 5
