Eucharistic Adoration: Eucharistic Adoration on the First Friday of the month, beginning with the 8:30 am Mass and concluding with a Divine Mercy Holy Hour and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 3:00 pm. Novena Services: Miraculous Medal Novena and the Saint Teresa Novena, with veneration of the relic of Saint Teresa, every Monday following the 8:30 am Mass. Baptisms: Every Sunday of the month 1:30 pm following the 12:30 pm Mass. Parents are asked to contact the rectory and schedule an appointment with one of the parish priests to make arrangements for the celebration of the Sacrament and to register for the Baptism preparation class. Marriages: Please contact the rectory at least one year in advance of the wedding to schedule an appointment with one of the parish priests. Participation in the Marriage Preparation Program offered by the Archdiocese of New York, along with Natural Family Planning classes, is required. To register for Marriage Preparation sessions, contact the Family Life / Respect Life website at Parish Membership: New parishioners are warmly welcomed. Those already enrolled in the school, CCD Program, sports or other parish activities are not automatically registered in our parish. Please stop by the parish office or call for a membership form. It is important that all parishioners are registered. 3 November 4, 2018 Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, LIVING CITY is an excellent magazine produced by the people of the Focolare - a religious movement begun in Italy during World War II by a dynamic young Catholic woman, Chiara Lubich. Today there are more than five million Focolare people of all ages, nations, and religious backgrounds. Focolare spirituality is based on Jesus' prayer for unity among all people, recorded in the Gospel of Saint John 17:21 - "That they may all be one." You can learn more about the Focolare (which means "hearth" i.e., the center of the home) on the internet. There is a New York community center in Dutchess County named Mariapolis Luminosa that I have been to many times. It is not far from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Presidential Memorial in Hyde Park. In the August/September issue of LIVING CITY, I read an excellent article by college chaplain Msgr. Michael Magee, about the attraction and addiction of pornography. All of us are vulnerable, but young people are especially in danger. So let me offer this to you, and invite you to share this wisdom as you see fit with those whom you love. Msgr. William Belford It is extremely important today for teenagers to have good guidance regarding the effects of pornography, especially on the internet, because they are encountering pornography at ever-younger ages. While pornography is detrimental to anyone, it is especially destructive to children and teenagers. Their emotional life is still developing. They are beginning to be faced with the moral questions that will shape their personal and spiritual identity. The viewing of pornography easily escalates into habit and even addiction, so that people's freedom to love authentically and ability to keep their sexual urges under healthy control can become diminished. Jesus was showing his profound knowledge of human nature, and not being legalistic or prudish, when he warned his disciples that chastity begins not just with physical actions but with what we choose to look at and what we spend time thinking about. "You have hear that it was said: 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart." (Matthew 5:27-28.) One frequently quoted bit of contemporary wisdom expresses it this way: "Watch your thoughts, they become words; watch your words, they become actions; watch your actions, they become habits; watch your habits, they become character; watch your character, because that becomes your destiny." Anyone can understand, and probably has seen, that addiction to drugs or alcohol can destroy relationships, and ruin lives. And in recent years, studies have begun to point out that the viewing of pornography regularly causes the body to release neuro-chemicals (like dopamine, testosterone, oxytocin, endogenous opiates, and serotonin) that can lead to the same kind of dependency that alcohol and drugs can cause. Over time, these can deaden people's senses, so that they no longer experience the same amount of pleasure, and they become enslaved to the search for more and more. As many adults have tragically learned, their ability to enter into and to maintain loving, satisfying relationships is hampered by their experience and use of pornography. Add to these dangers the exploitation and destruction of the lives of the people viewed in pornography. Someone who looks at porn is using these children of God as objects for his or her pleasure. The teenager who falls into this practice does not realize at first that this is harming his or her ability to develop healthy relationships, now or later. The only sure way to prevent this damage to yourself is to understand that viewing any pornography is literally poisonous to a person's mind and heart. Therefore: avoid it altogether. For anyone who has fallen into the bad habit of viewing pornography, healing is needed and possible. All of us should practice loving real people in authentic ways: renew and strengthen healthy relationships, volunteer to serve others in need, participate in church services and in community life. And when necessary, seek the help of professionals or of addiction recovery programs. One can find on the internet useful information and assistance for avoiding porn habits, including software that filters or provides accountability for someone's internet use. We all have to avoid dependency if we can, by warning of real dangers and by adopting good practices in this important part of our lives. There is truth and encouragement in the words of Jesus, recorded in Matthew 5:8, which is part of the Beatitudes: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." - 3

SETON FOUNDATION NEXT WEEK Next weekend parent representatives from The Seton Foundation for Learning a great program begun by Bishop Patrick Ahern for developmentally disabled children and young adults ages 3 to 21 years, will be selling raffle tickets for a $5,000 cash prize. Chances: $10 each or 3 for $25. Please support this worthy program if you can. Our Parish Bereavement Group is a big help for people who are grieving. Next meeting dates are these Saturdays: November 3 & 17, December 1 & 15, 10:30am to 11:45, in our Parish House at 115 Windsor Road at Slosson Av. Newly bereaved are always welcome. This First Sunday of the month after all Masses we will be collecting food and money for hungry people who come for help to our Sister Margaret Mary Food Pantry. All donations will be appreciated.
