Novena Services: Miraculous Medal Novena and the Saint Teresa Novena, with veneration of the relic of Saint Teresa, every Monday following the 8:30 am Mass. Baptisms: Every Sunday of the month 1:30 pm following the 12:30 pm Mass. Parents are asked to contact the rectory and schedule an appointment with one of the parish priests to make arrangements for the celebration of the Sacrament and to register for the Baptism preparation class. Marriages: Please contact the rectory at least one year in advance of the wedding to schedule an appointment with one of the parish priests. Participation in the Marriage Preparation Program offered by the Archdiocese of New York, along with Natural Family Planning classes, is required. To register for Marriage Preparation sessions, contact the Family Life / Respect Life website at Parish Membership: New parishioners are warmly welcomed. Those already enrolled in the school, CCD Program, sports or other parish activities are not automatically registered in our parish. Please stop by the parish office or call for a membership form. 3 September 23, 2018 Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, On Monday afternoon, September 17, Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan came to Staten Island to meet with priests and deacons. He is going to several parts of the archdiocese and visiting with clergy to talk and listen. We appreciated his visit, and we needed it. The Cardinal knows that many of you, our parishioners, also need to hear from him. He is trying to reach out by writing in Catholic New York and on Flocknotes and agreeing to be interviewed by the media. He deserves recognition for his leadership in facing this crisis, and he knows that our Church has very important and difficult work to do as we try to assist victims, be accountable, and repair sins of omission and commission in order to go forward. Cardinal began his meeting with us by saying that he is united with us in sorrow, embarrassment, confusion and anger at the scandals that we are confronting now. He listed three terrible scandals in his September 13 column in Catholic New York. Then, after considering the role of Satan, he asked us to turn to prayer to a particular Saint - Saint Michael the Archangel. In case you did not see it, let me quote the Cardinal s message - Confronting Satan With Prayer - and affirm that at every Mass this week we will make this intercession for ourselves and our Church. "At first I thought it was just me. All summer, with news of the stinging scandals Theodore McCarrick, Pennsylvania Grand Jury, Archbishop Vigano s controversial letter one right after the other, I began to wonder about the power of Satan, the prince of darkness. While we Catholics were sad, the Devil was laughing. Now, don t get me wrong. I m not taking blame away from predator priests (and Cardinals) or negligent bishops of the past. I m not claiming, as did the comedian Flip Wilson decades ago, The devil made me do it! Deacons, priests, bishops were responsible. All I was wondering was whether or not Satan was as well. Was it just me? Apparently not...i just finished listening to Bishop Robert Barron on YouTube, a scholar and a wonderful preacher, say the same thing. Satan has orchestrated all of this, only his most recent attempt to destroy the Church. Then last Saturday I was at St. Joseph s Seminary for an enlightening presentation by Dr. Scott Hahn, yet another biblical scholar, who called all of this a symphony orchestrated by Satan. Take note, neither were removing blame from those predator priests or irresponsible bishops, any more than they would from Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. All they were claiming was that the Evil One is active and behind all of this, as he was through the snake in Eden. Pope Francis would hardly disagree. He has constantly warned us of Satan s existence and power, repeating the caution of Blessed Pope Paul VI: The most effective tool the Prince of Darkness has is to coax us to think he does not exist. Jesus would certainly tell us, I told you so, as the Son of God Himself, had to face the might of the Evil One. St. Paul often warned us that our foe is the realm of darkness, the forces of evil, Satan himself, who continues to taunt us and ambush the Church. St. Peter reminds us that Satan prowls the earth seeking the ruin of souls. Now I hear from so many of you, God s People, that we need again the weapons of prayer, reparation, and penance ammunition that the Devil dreads. The only protection from Beelzebub is Jesus. Satan is the second most powerful force in creation. We know the first. And Jesus assured us that He will remain with us until the end of the world. He also was blunt in acknowledging that the gates of hell will not prevail against the Church, although, as a wise confessor whispered to me, that does not mean they ll ever stop trying. Enough of you have suggested this to me that I ve concluded that this is from the Lord: that we seek the help of St. Michael the Archangel in fighting Lucifer s invasion of the Church. Let s fight fire-with-fire, they recommend, the Good Angel (St. Michael) attacking the Bad Angel (Lucifer). St. Michael s feast day is around the corner, September 29. So, beginning Friday, September 21, the Feast of St. Matthew the Evangelist, I am asking that every Mass conclude, for nine days a novena with the ancient prayer requesting the Archangel s intercession against our foe, Satan. Here s the prayer: please, for the nine days concluding on September 29, his feast day, conclude every Mass with this prayer. If you re not at daily Mass during the week, say it yourself: Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do you, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls. 4 Church of Saint Teresa of the Infant Jesus and St. Nicholas Chapel Staten Island, NY MANY CELEBRATIONS FOR OUR SAINT TERESA There are at least three days coming when our parishioners can celebrate the annual feast of our parish s patron saint. The whole Church marks her entry into heaven on October 1. St. Teresa School students will honor her on First Friday at 8:30 Mass. And all of us will celebrate her holy life and claim her intercession for our parish and ourselves at each Mass on Sunday October 7. That day we also have a special celebration a Gala Luncheon at The Staaten Restaurant on Forest Avenue. Reservations are open for a few more days. Call the rectory to join us as we celebrate The Little Flower. SCOUTS AT 12:30 MASS TODAY Saint Teresa Parish is the official sponsor for Boy Scout Troop 37, and membership is open to everyone. But anyone attending the 12:30 Mass this Sunday will see a lot of young people from our Scouting community. As you may know, Scoutmaster Michael DiTrani is retiring after volunteering his service and leadership to Troop 37 for many years, including 10 years as Scoutmaster. Many scouts and parents of Troop 37 have appreciated the growth that has taken place in the personal development of each scout and the strong bonds they have made with one another. Today's Mass at 12:30 and the reception that follows is a chance for the scouting community to say thanks for Scoutmaster Michael DiTrani's dedication to Troop 37 Scouts and Families.
