Participation in the Marriage Preparation Program offered by the Archdiocese of New York, along with Natural Family Planning classes, is required. 3 August 13, 2017 Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, I hope you are productively using these precious days of summer for both prayer and pleasure. Another important p-word is planning - and so I want to invite you to hear about the progress of our plans to create a beautiful home in our former convent building. This residence will be for eight to ten young autistic adults, most or all from our parish and from the Staten Island community we serve. Our first open meeting was on June 21, and we have another one coming on Monday, August 28 at 7pm in our church (which is the only large air-conditioned space that we have.) Everyone is invited. Agenda items include a show-and-tell for the architectural plans prepared for the individual and communal living spaces within this building at 139 Windsor Road. It was built with parishioner donations and opened in 1960 for the Presentation Sisters who taught in our parish school for nearly five decades. Sister Margaret Mary Quinn, PBVM, and Sister Rosemary Ward, PBVM, have told me how delighted they are about the great future for this building that they loved and took care of very well. (You get extra credit if you remember that their congregation's initials stand for: Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.) The Sisters realize, as we all should, that we have an amazing opportunity to repurpose this building for a very suitable use. There are many people from our parish and Island who need a safe place to live, and a secure future in their own community. Encouraged by Cardinal Dolan, the Board of ArchCare - which is the health care ministry of the Archdiocese of New York - and the administrators, especially Mr. Scott LaRue, are making a tremendous financial commitment of $2.5 million to redesign and rebuild this space to make it useful for decades to come. The other big subject for August 28 will be to start a conversation about the criteria that will be used by professionals in the health-care field to help them choose the future residents who will become our neighbors. Many local people are interested in the selection process - and some are praying for a personally beneficial result. The leaders of ArchCare want to start this discussion now to help people know what might occur. Therefore everyone who is interested - for general knowledge or for a specific purpose - parishioners, neighbors, parents who want to plan for the future of their autistic children - everyone is invited to join us for this meeting on Monday, August 28th at 7pm. Speaking of construction, engineers and contractors for New York City have been working this week to install a new twenty-inch water main along Victory Boulevard near Clove Road, next to our Saint Teresa Parish ball field. Named in memory of one of the many great sports volunteers in our parish history, John Edwards Field is busy from early spring to late fall, primarily for baseball and soccer. Located on Victory Boulevard between Seneca Avenue and Ontario Avenue, not far from our Saint Nicholas Chapel on Northern Boulevard and LaBau Avenue in Sunnyside, this green space for sports is a blessing for our young parishioners. This property is the envy of many other sports groups, because having it allows the players and coaches of St. Teresa's Youth Athletic Association to schedule games and practices for our teams on a very wellmaintained field that is close to home. We also welcome other teams when we can fit them in. You know that the intersection of Clove Road and Victory Boulevard has been in need of improvement for a long time. We were notified about coming construction last year. One of our Parish Trustees, Mr. Anthony DeFazio, represented us at a meeting to review the plans to improve the traffic flow and deal with infrastructure. Only a corner of our property was supposed to be affected. But when actual construction work began, additional work was needed. Our YAA director, Mr. John Tuohy, has been instrumental in protecting our interests at the ball field at this time. Mr. Tuohy and I met at the field last Friday with Mr. John Tidona, a very helpful community representative from the NYC Department of Design and Construction. It seems that a new water main has to go under the sidewalk along Victory Boulevard the whole length of our ball field, using the existing trench that holds the old pipe. But it happens that this trench veers over to our fence and even comes close to our dugout. So as I write this, at the least it is clear that our fence along Victory from Seneca to Ontario has to come down. As soon as possible, I expect that it will be replaced without cost to us. For safety reasons - to protect all players and their families - we cannot use the ball field until all the work is completed. We have also voiced our concerns about site security while the trench is open and during the time that there is no fence to keep people away from the field, the concessions stands, and the dugouts. While this construction is a temporary inconvenience, it is for a greater good. It also shines a light on a part of our parish property and our service to youth that not everybody thinks about. It reminds us of the good we are doing, and our many reasons to be grateful for what other parishioners before us have dreamed, and given, and built. And in this time of seeking everyone's contributions to our RENEW+REBUILD Capital Campaign this also reminds us to be willing and generous, proud to do our part to sustain and improve the facilities that we inherit and that we should hand on in even better condition. Which I think you and I are doing with our new projects to air-condition our gymnasium, to air-condition our classrooms, and to transform our convent building into a beautiful home for autistic adults. Holy Day Schedule for August 15, A Holyday of Obligation We celebrate The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven this Tuesday August 15. For this holyday of obligation, we will have Masses in church on Monday August 14 at 4pm Tuesday August 15 at 7am, 8:30am, 12 Noon, and 7:30pm Each summer our Archdiocesan Office for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith sends us a guest speaker to remind us of the missionary needs of the universal church. Save this date Sunday, August 27 for a special learning experience! All are welcome to visit the historic Seaview Hospital campus with people from Building Bridges Coalition. Staten Island Historian Dr. Thomas Matteo will be the guide for all who come, with a tour beginning at 2pm. The interfaith Building Bridges Coalition of Staten Island, which our parish belongs to, will sponsor a walk to visit important sites on the campus of Seaview Hospital. Turn into the Seaview grounds, 460 Brielle Av, and meet in front of the old Administration Building. We will have a rare opportunity to learn from Dr. Matteo about Seaview as it was, what it has already become, and what it may be in the future. We will go into the Museum, and visit the Interfaith Chapel. Sister s order will receive all that you give in the second collection. Sending missionaries and supporting them with prayers and contributions is part of our baptismal responsibility.
