Eucharistic Adoration: Eucharistic Adoration on the First Friday of the month, beginning with the 8:30 am Mass and concluding with a Divine Mercy Holy Hour and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 3:00 pm. Novena Services: Miraculous Medal Novena and the Saint Teresa Novena, with veneration of the relic of Saint Teresa, every Monday following the 8:30 am Mass. Baptisms: Every Sunday of the month 1:30 pm following the 12:30 pm Mass. Parents are asked to contact the rectory and schedule an appointment with one of the parish priests to make arrangements for the celebration of the Sacrament and to register for the Baptism preparation class. Marriages: Please contact the rectory at least one year in advance of the wedding to schedule an appointment with one of the parish priests. Participation in the Marriage Preparation Program offered by the Archdiocese of New York, along with Natural Family Planning classes, is required. To register for Marriage Preparation sessions, contact the Family Life / Respect Life website at Parish Membership: New parishioners are warmly welcomed. Those already enrolled in the school, CCD Program, sports or other parish activities are not automatically registered in our parish. Please stop by the parish office or call for a membership form. It is important that all parishioners are registered. 3 February 4, 2018 Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, We just received the new posters for the Cardinal s Annual Stewardship Appeal. The posters have beautiful images of some of the people of our Archdiocese who benefit in some way from your contributions to the Cardinal s Appeal: young people at a youth rally, children in a Catholic school, newly ordained priests at Saint Joseph Seminary, an elderly priest in our retirement home. And in the middle is a strong visual reminder about our very large area and diverse needs: a list of the names of the ten counties of our Archdiocese. It has been my privilege to serve in five of these counties: three parishes in The Bronx, two in Rockland, two in Manhattan, one in Dutchess, and now, of course, in the best parish in the best county! I have been to all of the counties many times. For six years, when I was Director of the Office for Parish Councils, I went to sixteen meetings in all parts of the diocese each month. So I can attest to the quality and commitment of Catholic people everywhere in the Archdiocese. And, in case you were wondering about the names of the other five counties, they are: Westchester, Putnam, Orange, Ulster, and Sullivan. I was very pleased by the approval and enthusiasm of church-goers for the name LITTLE HOME OF LOVE which was announced in the bulletin last Sunday. This name draws on the little way of Saint Teresa and seems to fit our ideals and desire to help create a safe and happy home for autistic adults in our former convent building. Since I can t think of many good things that happen without prayer, I would like to recruit a strong and faithful group of parishioners who will promise to provide prayer support for everyone and everything involved in this important effort. We can start by praying for inspiration for the planners, courage and wisdom for the families of potential residents, courage for the residents themselves who probably face big adjustments, on-going respect and concern for neighbors, excellent work by the builders, community acceptance and support, etc., etc. The list will be as long as needed, and will eventually include the names of the residents and staff. If you would like be come a Prayer Supporter for this LITTLE HOME OF LOVE, please send me a note with all your contact information. We ll meet in a few weeks and decide what our prayer commitment should be. When you actually meet people and get involved in their lives, your own inner goodness comes alive, doesn t it? We look forward to meeting the people who will have a new home in our building. We do not know who they are as yet. We are just getting started. People need to hear about this, and they will want details. There will be a lengthy process to see who is interested and who is eligible, who can complete all the paperwork and make the commitments, etc. But this home is needed! It is an answer to prayers. Many people are telling me that they have a family member, or they know someone, with autism. Here is one example from Monday s mail: What an incredible project your residence for autistic adults. My nephew, who has very severe autism, has just turned 18. It is a heartache for my brother and sister-in-law to imagine what will happen to him when they are gone. He will never be able to live on his own. Your Little Home of Love would be just the kind of place they would wish for him. Opening our hearts usually leads us to open our checkbooks. You did that at Christmas, didn t you? You gave generously to family and friends (as your credit card bills may now prove.) But there are many more people in need than just our immediate families. Our faith in God and our obedience to Jesus requires us to look around and see how we can help others. With Lent soon to begin on February 14, this is a good time to remember the parable of our Lord Jesus Christ about the last judgment. In the Gospel of Saint Matthew, chapter 25, we read the powerful warning that Jesus gives about the separation of the sheep and the goats. Some were thrilled to be rewarded, some were shocked to be rejected. What you did for the least of my brothers was the determining factor. Therefore I always give to the Cardinal s Appeal, as I give to our parish. And I now ask you to open your checkbook or pull out your credit card, and make a sacrifice during Lent to help others. This is a once-a-year appeal, and it is not for our parish, nor for LITTLE HOME OF LOVE. I join Cardinal Dolan in asking you to give from your heart to help the many people served through THE CARDINAL S ANNUAL STEWARDSHIP APPEAL. The Appeal begins now, and you can make your personal response to the Appeal part of your Lenten duty: to pray more often; to give up things as sacrifice and self-discipline; to give what you can to help others in need. Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Brownies and Cub Scouts will actively participate by serving as lectors, gift bearers, and altar servers, and will proudly wear their uniforms to Mass. May God bless all of our Scouts, Families, and Leaders! A DAY WITH SIMILARITIES Wednesday February 14 carries double weight this year. It is Ash Wednesday, which you already know about. It is St. Valentine s Day, which you should know about. Some would say that these two important observances have something in common. All Christians should use Ash Wednesday to remember their need for repentance and reform, so that they make up for their past failings, and thus are more likely to have a happy and peaceful future. Clearly, coming to church on Ash Wednesday and wearing ashes on your forehead as proof of you desire and promise to be much better, is highly recommended. Similarly, people who have important persons in their lives whom they love and depend upon, should realize that those important persons may have expectations about Saint Valentine s Day. Therefore, some would say: Many people should use Saint Valentine s Day to remember their need for repentance and reform, so that they make up for their past failings, and thus are more likely to have a happy and peaceful future. Today is the first Sunday of the month and Sister Margaret Mary s Food Pantry will be eager to accept donations of food or money at all of the Masses so that people in our area who are hungry will have something more to eat. Ash Wednesday is February 14. Ashes will be distributed in St. Teresa Church during and after Masses at 7am, 8:30am, 12 noon and 7:30pm. We will also have a special service for children and adults in church at 3:30pm. Gathering and Burning To Make New Ashes Our Boy Scouts are preparing to burn last year s blessed palms for us, outdoors after the 12:30 Mass next Sunday. Following a prayer, all the burnt palms that have been brought to the vestibule of the church by then will be reduced to ashes. Those ashes will be used to make the Sign of the Cross on foreheads three days later on the first day of Lent, as our personal sign of repentance for the sins we have been committing, and our pledge to improve during Lent. PRAYER FOR THIS WEEK That people that are burdened by their sins, and are suffering from grudges or addictions, may accept help and give forgiveness, let us pray to the Lord... CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS FOR 2017 We are very grateful to everyone who contributes to the support of our parish, and we will be glad to provide a statement of your donations to St. Teresa Church for your tax purposes. We have mailed a contribution statement to everyone who asked for a statement last year.
