4 MARCH 25, 2018 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH #481/PAGE 4 ~PASTOR S NOTES~ I would like to thank the parishioner who donated fill and gravel to fill in an area eroded by the rain. I wish to take this opportunity to also thank all who volunteer their time to the parish. I recently met with an architect for the replacement of the bell tower at the Martyrs church. He also looked at the ceiling. He will work with us and the archdiocese office to try to restore the Martyrs to its pristine condition. Speaking of the Martyrs church, there was a binder of the history of the chapel in back. It has been missing for quite a while. If anyone has it or knows someone who does have it please return it. It would be especially helpful in the restoration work. March 25 is usually the Solemnity of the Annunciation when the second person of the Blessed Trinity became man in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary. But because Holy Week begins today the Annunciation will be moved to Monday April 9. To prepare ourselves spiritually for Easter confessions will be available on Monday, March 26, from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. We will have two Graymoor friars to assist us. Today, Palm (Passion) Sunday we begin the most solemn of all times of the year. We are immersed in the spiritually and emotionally intense commemoration of our Lord s passion, death, and resurrection. Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem gives way to His betrayal and death leading to the joy of His glorious resurrection. On Holy Thursday we remember Jesus example of priestly service when He washed the feet of the Apostles. He also celebrated the Passover while establishing the new Paschal Sacrifice by the institution of the priesthood and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Good Friday is the only day of the whole year when no Mass is said since we remember our Lord s passion and death and three days in the tomb. It used to be referred to as The Mass of the Presanctified because the hosts were consecrated the night before at the Mass of the Last Supper. The three days of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday are called the Sacred Triduum (Three days). There is no dismissal after Holy Thursday or Good Friday because these three days do not end but are really one continuous liturgical event, culminating in the resurrection of Jesus Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. So these days should not be spent in any trivial matters but should be a time to allow us to be drawn into the mystery of our redemption through prayerful reflection on Jesus unfathomable act of love. Please make every possible effort to come to the Mass services during the Triduum, including the Tenebrae prayer services Friday and Saturday morning. It will be a time of great grace for all. In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Frank Samoylo
