1 SOLEMNITY OF SAINT THOMAS OF VILLANOVA OCTOBER 9, 2016 Note from Fr. Joe... Happy Feast Day! Once again, as part of our remembering the patron of our parish, St. Thomas of Villanova, we re including in this special bulletin the Annual Stewardship Report. For it is in the giving of our time, talent, and treasure that we best honor him and his legacy. As Thomas once noted, We are not born for ourselves, and the natural gifts and free graces that we receive are not for ourselves alone, but we have received them that they might be of benefit to all and we might be faithful in stewardship. He definitely calls us to practice what we preach. The Annual Report confirms that you continue to do just that. Based on feedback from last year, we ve tried to be even more thorough and inclusive in compiling the report. For example, we ve added the parish Councils Pastoral, Finance, and Stewardship to the list of ministries and activities. It should have been obvious that people give a good number of hours to serving the parish in that way. As a result, our totals in all areas have increased; here are the really impressive results for time and talent: 72 entries under Ministries and Activities 36,359 Ministry Hours, which translates to 1,515 days or 4.15 years (within a year s time!) 3,150 Ministers (though, of course, there are some duplicates as some people give of their time and talent in more than one area.) Giving, in terms of treasure, also was quite noteworthy. Collections, including Sundays, Christmas, Easter, and other Holydays, amounted to $1.347 million, which allowed us to award Stewardship grants and aid totaling $134,660. A full list of grant recipients is included in the report. The distribution process is one of the most rewarding things we get to do in the parish. As I always note though, we never take any of these numbers for granted. There s always more to be done and a dynamic parish like ours requires a lot of resources. So please take this opportunity to reflect on your stewardship. If you haven t been involved, please consider it! Finally, we wish our Parish Bell Choir Director, Joyce Klink, well, as she and her husband Paul move back to their native Tennessee at the end of this week. They will be greatly missed. Thank you Joyce for all your service and for adding such a beautiful touch to our liturgies! The Bell Choir will be on hiatus this year, as we spend some time considering the best way forward. In the meantime, though, on the music ministry front, I m happy to report that Christine Kline is volunteering her time and talent to work with our youth, grades 1-8. She has started rehearsals and is very pleased with the response to date. God Bless! Fr. Joe Stewardship Thought for the Week Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God. Luke 17:18 Most of us live easy lives. We have food, shelter and clothing. We go on vacation every year and own a car or two. Most of us take this all for granted. Did you ever notice that people with the least amount of possessions are usually the most grateful? Shouldn t this be the other way around? Take time every day and thank God for all He has given you. Thank you for your generosity for the weekend of October 1 and 2, Number of Envelopes 295 Envelope Amount $12, Loose Cash: $2, Electronic Offerings: $2, Other $40.00 Total $17, % Tithe $1, Income on Oct. 4, 2015 $20, St. Thomas of Villanova

4 WE THIRST: Lessons in Mercy A Course on Addiction Awareness Within our Society. Four Monday Evenings from 7:00pm to 9:00pm St. Thomas of Villanova Parish Center - Rosemont, PA RSVP TO , EXT. 202 or bizmgr@stvparish.org (for material purposes only) About the Course: These evenings of reflection are designed for all members of our community including the afflicted and their families and friends, counselors, nurses, ministers, deacons, those in the criminal justice system, educators, and anyone who would like to learn more to become part of a solution. About the Presenter: Nina Marie Corona, Ma, CRS, is a Pennsylvania Board Certified Recovery Specialist who received her education certification in Alcohol & Drug Counseling from Villanova University and has recently been hired to teach for Villanova s College of Professional Studies in their Drug and Alcohol counseling program. October 10th: Evening Three: Sociology This third week s topic is on the impact of substance abuse on society, with a special focus on the small society of the family. We will learn why exactly addiction is referred to as a family disease and how exactly others in the family can become affected when they are not ingesting a substance. Themes such as blame, shame, anger, guilt, grief, caring, codependence, and much more will be explored. As always, the second half of the evening focuses on various solutions as well as some positive changes that are happening in society. This week s virtue: courage. October 17th: Evening Four: Spirituality The series concludes with an examination of our spiritual nature and how and why spirituality is an important part of the recovery process. Oftentimes the use of a substance is a misguided attempt to quench a spiritual thirst or craving. We will explore the missing piece to the puzzle of our lives, the God-shaped hole within each of us, and the only real way that this void can be filled. This week we will discuss not one, but three virtues: faith, hope and love. Help Wanted: Afternoon Preschool Program and Childcare After school program Mature, responsible candidate needed for afterschool care at St. Thomas of Villanova Preschool. Days: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Time: 3:00pm 6:00pm Afternoon Program Teacher Assistant needed. Days: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Time: 12:30pm 6:00pm. For a full list of acceptable items, visit SCRIPTURE REFLECTION SESSION The parish offers weekly Scripture Reflection Sessions on Tuesday mornings (10:00am) and evenings (7:00pm). These sessions are conducted by Fr. Michael and Ginny Neumer. The sessions are based on the Sunday scripture readings for the following week s Mass. The object of these sessions is to enhance and heighten the worship experience of those participating in the sessions by reflecting on and discussing the weekly readings prior to the Eucharistic celebration. Because the readings vary from week to week continuity with previous sessions is not essential, affording participants flexibility in attendance. Sessions will conclude on Tuesday, November 22nd, which is the last Tuesday before the season of Advent. All are welcome! You are even encouraged to bring a friend or two. STV FOOD PANTRY NEEDS YOUR HELP!! The Parish food closet accepts donations of non-perishable foods on a weekly basis.
