1 TWENTY-NINTH NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 22, 2017 A Note from Fr. Michael.. After calling the chief priests and the elders to conversion of life by a series of pointed parables, Jesus is approached by disciples of the Pharisees and Herodians in an effort to trap him in his own words. Jesus response is perhaps his most celebrated and often quoted of all responses. Jesus has come up to Jerusalem for the last time; ceasing the opportunity the Pharisees decide to entrap him. They begin with a compliment, We know you are a truthful man, and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Their intention here is to throw him off guard. This initial nicety is followed by the barbed question aimed at putting Jesus in a no-win situation. Tell us, they inquire, is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not? The tax involved, a kind of poll tax, was detested by the Jews on two counts: first because it was a painful reminder that they were a subjected people; and second because the coinage in which it was paid bore the image of the Roman emperor that proclaimed him as divine. If Jesus said that the tax should be paid he would loose all credibility with the people; on the other hand, if he were to say it should not, he could then be accused of fomenting disobedience, even rebellion against Rome, and that could have fatal consequences. Jesus both knew and called out their hypocrisy by asking for them to show him the coin that pays the temple tax. To carry the coin was deemed a sacrilege. Jesus did not carry the coin; they did. Upon examination of the coin, Jesus asks, Whose image is this and whose inscription? The answer to his question is known to all. Both the image and the inscription, they admit, belong to Caesar. Jesus has trapped them at their own game. Returning the coin to them he responds, Render to Caesar what is Caesar s, and to God what is God s. To render to God what is God s is precisely the conversion Jesus has been calling them to. Our primary commitment in life has to be to God. Of course we have to accept lawful civil authority: in fact, as Christians we are called to be the best of citizens. Being good responsible citizens, working for the common good of the community is our Christian duty. At the same time, we do not look to the state as our moral guide. Legality and morality are not always synonymous. The challenge is not in rendering to Caesar, but in Seeking first the Reign of God and his justice. Stewardship Thought for the Week Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar s and to God the things that are God s. Matthew 22:37 Everything we are and everything we have belongs to God. We aren t owners of anything, we are merely stewards of the gifts God has given each of us. All God is asking is that we give back a portion of what He gave us. This is the essence of Stewardship. God should be our first priority in everything. All else comes second. It is rooted in Scripture and is defined in Church documents. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) published a summary of key themes from the Teaching in Seven Themes of Catholic Social Teaching on their website (usccb.org). The Themes are: 1. Life and Dignity of the Human Person. 2. Call to Family, Community and Participation 3. Rights and Responsibilities 4. Option for the Poor and Vulnerable 5. The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers 6. Solidarity 7. Care for God s Creation OMGC/STV Advocates for the Poor and Hungry use this publication to guide our work. The Church, in the first theme, proclaims that human life is sacred and the dignity of the human person is the foundation for a moral society and for all the principles of our social teaching. In the second, USCCB includes: How we organize our society in economics and politics, in law and policy directly affects human dignity. We will more fully explain how these themes are used in future articles for this column. If you are willing to advocate from home for the hungry people in the US and around, please contact Parish Coordinator, Ann Rafferty, at raffertyannh@gmail.com or St. Thomas of Villanova
