1 PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD MARCH 25, 2018 A Note from the Pastor. PALM SUNDAY The triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem is the focal point of this celebration which initiates Holy Week. Scenes of palm branches waving and excited proclamations of Hosanna flood our mind s eye. And yet we know that this hoopla culminates in the execution of an innocent man whose only crime was to preach justice, forgiveness and love. Unfortunately, in our Christian tradition, the Jews have been unjustly blamed for his execution through the ages. But the reality is that most of his supporters were Jews; they were the crowds of whom the Romans and Jewish authorities were so afraid that they arrested Jesus at night. Those who shouted for his crucifixion on Good Friday were collaborators planted by the authorities who compromised their beliefs in order to gain temporal benefits; they were not the same crowds who followed him faithfully and supported him against the injustices rained upon them by Rome and its collaborators. For a fuller understanding of this event, it s helpful to know that Roman Imperial processions into Jerusalem were designed to coincide with the Jewish festivals in order to remind the Jews that Rome was in charge. It would be a normal occurrence for Pilate to ride into Jerusalem with pomp and a great display of power to send the message that he would not tolerate trouble of any sort. In contrast, Jesus enters Jerusalem from the opposite perspective. Pilate s demonstration was of power and violent suppression by an empire intent on keeping the Jews enslaved. In his counter-demonstration, Jesus makes the statement that real power comes from justice and from God; everything else eventually passes away. True authority derives from doing what is right and just; corruption depends on brute force. The Palm Sunday procession reminds us that there still remains today the tension between the way of Jesus and the way of a world intent on selfish gain. Those who champion justice for the poor and oppressed in the face of unjust laws and economic practices are seen as threats and, like Jesus, are the targets of violence by those who want to silence them. but just as Jesus continued to advocate for the truth on behalf of those who had no power, may we be encouraged to speak out against the injustices we perceive in our world today. Stewardship Thought for the Week Pilate again said to them, Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews? And they cried out again, Crucify him. Mark 15:12-13 Jesus told us whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me. Every day we are presented with opportunities to help someone. Every day we have the opportunity to see the face of Jesus in others and be the face of Jesus to others. Pray for the strength and courage to stand up for those in need of our help. Parish Office will be closed on Good Friday, March 30th and Easter Monday, April 2nd. The Daily Mass on Monday, April 2nd, is at 12:05pm. in the Rosemont Chapel. It also has been our longstanding tradition as Catholics to offer alms in support of the Catholic Community in the Holy Land. As directed by our Holy Father, Pope Francis, funds generated by this collection support programs and services in the Holy Land. Support is needed to maintain the sacred places, to provide educational and pastoral programs as well as outreach programs for the poor through established charitable institutions. Holy Family Home Little Sisters of the Poor 5300 Chester Avenue Philadelphia, PA February,2018 Dear St. Thomas of Villanova Parishioners, In 1975 Pope Paul VI wrote: Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses (Evangelii Nuntiandi, 41). St. Jeanne Jugan is like a beacon of light to guide our society today through her legacy witnessed in compassionate love and mercy upon the elderly poor of our homes throughout the world. The spirit of hospitality and fraternal love, founded on limitless trust in Providence, is her witness faithfully lived out in the lives of the Little Sisters of the Poor. The Christmas gifts which you gave to our residents, the extra funds from your Advent Angel sales, and the Valentine s Day bookmarks and candy bags embody the fulfillment of the Beatitudes Blessed are the Merciful for they shall obtain Mercy We thank you for supporting us and sharing in our common spirit of compassion and love. Be assured of our continuous prayers and monthly Masses offered faithfully for our friends and benefactors throughout the year. May His Love be your reward! God bless all we are grateful! Sincerely in Christ, Sr. Veronica Susan, lsp Begging Sister St. Thomas of Villanova

6 Our Volunteers are the Hospitality in the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) at St. Thomas of Villanova Parish Homeless families come to St. Thomas of Villanova at a vulnerable time in their lives when they are without a roof over their heads. Most are single mothers who do not have adequate employment, the skills necessary to provide for their families, or the support of loved ones. At St. Thomas of Villanova we provide a spirit of warmth and hospitality 5 times a year for one week at a time. Through the kindness of our volunteers we are able to supply a safe and welcoming environment for families to spend their evenings and nights at our Parish Center. Teams of two or more people usually carry out all of these functions, so you won t be by yourself. We urge you to consider extending St. Thomas of Villanova hospitality to families in our community.
