2 TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 12, 2014 A Note from Fr. Joe. Welcome to this special edition of our parish bulletin, as we celebrate the Solemnity of our patron, St. Thomas of Villanova, and publish our Annual Stewardship Report! The two really go hand-in-hand because of the many things for which St. Thomas is remembered the one that stands out for us is his emphasis on sharing, especially with those in need. He once wrote, One thing alone I can call my own the obligation to distribute to my brethren the possessions with which God has entrusted me. This man, who came to be known as the Beggar Bishop and Father of the Poor, is even said to have given away the straw mattress on which he slept, asking only that he be allowed to borrow it until his death. If you d like to learn more information like this about our patron, please be sure the take the pamphlet, Saint Thomas of Villanova Augustinian Bishop, being made available, starting after all the Masses this weekend. If St. Thomas looked at our Annual Stewardship Report, I can t help but believe that he would be encouraged by the giving of time, talent, and treasure that occurs in our parish. Thanks to all of you who are good stewards, following the Gospel message of Christ and the example of St. Thomas! As St. Paul declares in the 2 nd Reading, Through the evidence of this service, you are glorifying God for your obedient confession of the Gospel of Christ and the generosity of your contribution to them (the poor & needy) and to all others. Please take the time to review the Annual Report, including the parish financials, which are provided as a means of being transparent as possible. To this end, we ve also given an explanation of the stewardship grant distribution process and the criteria we utilize. Obviously, we never want to take our stewardship for granted. My hope is that we all can recommit ourselves this weekend, as we honor St. Thomas of Villanova. Perhaps it s best that I give him the final words We are not born for ourselves, and the natural gifts and free graces that we receive are not for ourselves alone, but we have received them that they might be of benefit to all and we might be faithful in stewardship. (Fourth Sermon after Easter, Sermon 2, 3) Happy Feast Day! Fr. Joe Stewardship Thought for the Week And my God will supply every need of yours Philippians 4:19 God really does provide for those that are grateful and generous. This is very difficult for people that don t live a stewardship lifestyle to believe. People are skeptical and say it s just coincidence. If you are skeptical, try living a stewardship lifestyle for just one month be generous with your gifts of time, talent and treasure and see how God provides for your needs. Thank you for your generosity for the weekend of October 4 and 5, 2014: Number of Envelopes 316 Envelope Amount $16, Loose Cash: $1, Electronic Offerings: $1, Other $ Total $19, % Tithe $1, Income for October 6, 2013 $29, * * Last year this included a single donation of $10, St. Thomas of Villanova

Broad Street Philadelphia, PA nd of Our Novena of Healing Masses: SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19th, 2:00PM Confessions: 1:00pm to 2:00pm Celebrant: Fr. Don Reilly, O.S.A. Novena of Healing Masses Celebrated by the Augustinian Friars Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, October 12, 2014 Today vast numbers of people still do not know Jesus Christ. Pope Francis begins his message for this year s celebration of World Mission Sunday with these words. And he quickly offers us the way to make a joy-filled, life-giving difference: World Mission Sunday is a privileged moment when the faithful of various continents engage in prayer and concrete gestures of solidarity in support of the young Churches in mission lands. On October 19, our Archdiocesan family celebrates this privileged moment joining with our brothers and sisters around the world who will gather at the Lord s Table to celebrate, with great joy, our common vocation as Missionaries. Our prayers and concrete gestures of solidarity will help build local churches, like the church in Mongolia, the world s youngest Catholic Church, and churches across the globe. Through the work of missionaries in these churches, and their witness to Christ, the needy receive practical help and experience God s love and mercy, His hope and peace. Your prayers and material support will help the Pontifical Mission Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the Holy Father s chief missionary arm, to provide resources to missionaries who proclaim the Gospel and offer help to our brothers and sisters throughout 1,150 mission dioceses. As I said in the past, We need to bring Jesus Christ to the whole world and the whole world to Jesus Christ. Our mission flows straight from the inner life of the Trinity. God sent his Son. The Son sends his Church. And the Church sends us. We need to be missionaries. No work of the Church is more central to her reason for being. I thank you in advance for your generous response to the needs of others. Pope Francis encourages us to take joyful part in the Church s mission to all the nations, as we live our lives grounded in love for Jesus and concern for the needs of the most disadvantaged. May World Mission Sunday offer each one of us an opportunity to accomplish both, as we share the joy of the Gospel and help all people in need with our fervent prayer and our generous hearts! Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Archbishop of Philadelphia St. Thomas of Villanova

This is an important sacramental celebration for the whole parish community. It is our opportunity to actively support the members of this parish family who are in need of the Church s Ministry. 7 THE FAMILY LIFE COMMITTEE INVITES YOU TO A PARENT LECTURE Monday, October 27th at 7:00pm in the Rosemont Auditorium Topic: Letting Go with Love and Confidence The challenges of being a parent multiply the older kids get. There are no longer sleepless nights and childcare snafus to contend with, but parents of adolescents must juggle the demands of extracurricular activities, driving lessons and increasing concerns about the growing universe of their teens. How to parents of adolescents balance safety concerns with their children s need to achieve growing independence? And how do they create a healthy balance when the world is going 24/7 nonstop? Susan FitzGerald, a Philadelphia journalist and co-author of the award-winning parenting book, Letting Go with Love and Confidence: Raising Responsible, Resilient, Self-Sufficient Teens in the 21st Century, will offer ideas on how to transform a time of potential strife into an opportunity for positive growth for both adolescents and their parents. Her book written with Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg of The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia covers all the when and how questions that can drive parents crazy: When is my kid old enough to get a cell phone? Go to the mall? Date? It also addresses the tough topics that parents struggle with How in the world do I talk with my teen about things like peer pressure and success? FitzGerald will share the three-step litmus test that can be applied to any parenting decision. (Is it safe? Is it practical? Does it meet my standards for decency and morality?) She will also teach parents who to use the check-in rule to keep their kids safe. She is an engaging speaker who delivers a positive message that parents really do matter! Susan Fitzgerald is an award-winning journalist with a specialty in children s health issues. A former staff writer and editor for The Philadelphia Inquirer, she works as an independent writer and editor and has taught writing and journalism at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, LaSalle University, St. Joseph s University and Villanova University. She and her husband are long-time members of St. Thomas of Villanova and have three adult sons. Please join us for a fascinating evening. There will be wine and cheese and a chance to socialize. 12 International National Local 2014 International 17, National 31, Local 81, Total 130, Stewardship Total 130, Stewardship Grant Process Time, talent and treasure. As a stewardship parish community, we have heard these word many times since we first embarked on this path back in Just take a look at all of the ministries we support in our parish, and you will see that we have embraced these three pillars of stewardship and have woven them into our daily parish life. One example of stewardship in action is our practice of tithing 10% of our weekly collections and placing them in a Stewardship Fund to be distributed to needy individuals and organizations. Perhaps you have noticed the thank you letters that we receive and publish in the weekly bulletin, or have seen previous reports outlining the organizations we ve supported with grants. You may have wondered, with so many deserving organizations, how did the parish decide who to give to? Well, the grant distribution process is overseen by the Stewardship Council. Over the past several years, we have worked to refine our review and distribution process to ensure that we are truly good stewards of the funds entrusted to us. The grant process begins with the posting of the grant application on our Parish website. We ve established April 30th as our filing deadline and require a good faith effort in completing our application for consideration. At our May meeting, 2-3 grant applications are distributed to each council member who reviews, evaluates and scores them according to our evaluation criteria. (See below for a copy of the first round of criteria used.) Then, during our June meeting, we review the applicants and enter their evaluation score into a spreadsheet that helps us establish minimum grant awards. We then take a closer look at requests that were flagged during the first round and make adjustments to awards based on the available funds remaining. This process continues until we ve awarded all of the available funds. The final step in this process is to provide the Parish s Business Manager with the grant recipient information so she can issue letters and checks. Throughout the year, we invite local grant recipients to address our Stewardship Council and share with us their mission and the impact our stewardship funds are having. Beyond our local communities, our grants aid organizations on an international and national basis as well. For 2014, we received requests for $156,001.13; awarded 26 grants totaling $101, and made additional distributions throughout the year in emergency aid to individuals and organizations of $29, for a total Stewardship distribution of $130, The Holy Spirt is indeed active in St. Thomas of Villanova Parish!
