1 SOLEMNITY OF ST. THOMAS OF VILLANOVA OCTOBER 11, 2015 A Note from Fr. Joe Welcome to this special edition of our parish bulletin, as we celebrate the Solemnity of our patron, St. Thomas of Villanova, and, once again, publish our Annual Stewardship Report! As I ve noted in the past, the two really go hand-in-hand because St. Thomas spent most of his life emphasizing the importance of good stewardship and sharing from our many gifts, especially with those in need. I can t help but believe that our patron and Pope Francis would be kindred spirits. In Day by Day with Thomas of Villanova, O.S.A., a book compiled by the late John E. Rotelle, O.S.A., there s a section that addresses the fact that Thomas became known as the Beggar Bishop and Father of the Poor. I feel it bears recounting here: In that era throughout all Europe, many bishops and other prelates were accustomed to luxury a sign of the times These misguided men were more concerned with royal prerogatives than with the needs of their people. Not so with Thomas. He sought to give all of his people especially the young ones a chance to create for themselves the opportunity for self-advancement. Therefore, he first visited each of his parishes to see for himself what the needs of the people were. Then he used the income of his affluent archdiocese to set up social programs on behalf of the poor and rejected. He established boarding schools and high schools. For young girls, he provided dowries, enabling them to be married in dignity. For the hungry, he turned his bishop s palace into a kind of soup kitchen. For the homeless, he provided a place to sleep, offering them the shelter of his own home. It is thus for good reason that the common folk called him the Beggar Bishop and Father of the Poor. If St. Thomas of Villanova were to visit this parish, our parish which bears his name, I think he would be encouraged by the giving of time, talent, and treasure summarized in our Annual Report. Please peruse it, including the stewardship grants, as well as the parish financials that are provided as a means of being as transparent as possible. The day I was composing this note we happened to receive a letter from the Archdiocese regarding the review of our Annual Parish Financial Report for the fiscal year ended June 30, I m happy to share the following conclusions: Your financial report reflects the effective administration of parish resources and the sacrificial giving of your parishioners. We appreciate your thoroughness in preparing your financial report and budget, as we found them to be in very good order. A debt of sincere gratitude is owed to Karen Farley, our Parish Business Manager, and all those who serve on our Parish Finance Council. Most importantly, thanks to all of you who are good stewards, not only with your treasure, but also with your time and talent! You truly are following the Gospel message of Christ and the example of St. Thomas. Obviously, though, we never want to take our stewardship for granted. Let s recommit ourselves this weekend, answering a question from Pope Francis that I highlighted in last Sunday s bulletin What about you? How might you get involved? How might we build on our efforts? Finally, this year, we warmly welcome Fr. Michael DiGregorio, O.S.A., Prior Provincial of the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova, who is joining us for the Solemnity and preaching at all the Masses. Happy Feast Day! Fr. Joe Stewardship Thought for the Week From a Sunday, October 4, 2015 interview with actor Hugh Jackman in Parade: I was brought up with a religious sense of giving back. 6 October 11, 2015 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Every year we remember in a special way our Baptismal call to mission as we celebrate World Mission Sunday, this year on October 18th. On this Sunday, we will gather at the Eucharist, as will Catholics throughout the world, in a spirit of love for Evangelization. This year s celebration is further enriched as we mark the 50th Anniversary of the Second Vatican Council s Decree on the Missionary Activity of the Church which proclaims, The pilgrim Church on earth is missionary by its very nature, reminding us that all of us are called to be on Mission. As we remember the World Meeting of Families and the Pope s recent visit, his World Mission Sunday, message may hold a special meaning for us in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He says, Mission is part of the grammar of faith, something essential for those who listen to the voice of the Spirit who whispers come and Go forth. Those who follow Christ cannot fail to be missionaries... On World Mission Sunday, as our archdiocesan family joins our brothers and sisters around the world, we connect with our world on mission:.with Africa, where six million children receive an education in some 16,000 Church-run elementary schools...with Asia, where those who are sick are provided with care at 5,000 Catholic hospitals and small clinics...with the Americas, where catechists travel to remote areas to bring the Good News of God s great love to families...with Oceania, where young men are supported in their studies for the priesthood...with Europe, where new churches are being built to welcome faith communities, renewed after years of persecution. Your prayers and material support will help the Pontifical Mission Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the Holy Father s chief missionary arm, to provide resources to missionaries who proclaim the Gospel and offer help to our brothers and sisters throughout 1,150 mission diocese. As I have said, We should always put our money where our heart is...we should be very generous so that our missionaries will be supported not only by our prayer but also have concrete help. I thank you in advance for your generous response to the needs of others. Pope Francis emphasizes that Mission is a passion for Jesus and at the same time a passion for his people. May we have the same passion this World Mission Sunday, as we share the joy of the Gospel and help the poor by our fervent prayer and through generous hearts. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Archbishop of Philadelphia You are invited to a Brown Bag Lunch on Tuesday, October 13th at 12:45pm in the Rosemont Auditorium Topic: Emerging Infections * All you need to know about current Global Infectious Disease Challenges Presenter: Dr. Bob Leggiadro Parishioner Bob is a member of St. Thomas of Villanova Pastoral Council and a Lector who has a background in pediatrics and pediatric infectious diseases. 7 STEWARDSHIP REPORT 2015 YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD! You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. As a stewardship parish community, we have heard these word many times since we first embarked on this path back in Just take a look at all of the ministries we support in our parish, and you will see that we have embraced these three pillars of stewardship and have woven them into our daily parish life. One example of stewardship in action is our practice of tithing 10% of our weekly collections and placing them in a Stewardship Fund to be distributed to needy individuals and organizations. Perhaps you have noticed the thank you letters that we receive and publish in the weekly bulletin, or have seen previous reports outlining the organizations we ve supported with grants. You may have wondered, with so many deserving organizations, how did the parish decide who to give to? Well, the grant distribution process is overseen by the Stewardship Council. Over the past several years, we have worked to refine our review and distribution process to ensure that we are truly good stewards of the funds entrusted to us. The grant process begins with the posting of the grant application on our Parish website. We ve established April 30th as our filing deadline and require a good faith effort in completing our application for consideration. At our May meeting, 2-3 grant applications are distributed to each council member who reviews, evaluates and scores them according to our evaluation criteria. (See on other page for a copy of the first round of criteria used.) Then, during our June meeting, we review the applicants and enter their evaluation score into a spreadsheet that helps us establish minimum grant awards. We then take a closer look at requests that were flagged during the first round and make adjustments to awards based on the available funds remaining. This process continues until we ve awarded all of the available funds. The final step in this process is to provide the Parish s Business Manager with the grant recipient information so she can issue letters and checks. Throughout the year, we invite local grant recipients to address our Stewardship Council and share with us their mission and the impact our stewardship funds are having. Beyond our local communities, our grants aid organizations on an international and national basis as well. For 2015, we awarded Stewardship grants and aids totaling $133, The Holy Spirt is indeed active in St. Thomas of Villanova Parish! St. Thomas of Villanova
