1 THE EXAULTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS September 14, 2014 St. Thomas of Villanova is an Augustinian Roman Catholic Community. As the Body of Christ, we share our time, talent and treasure to fulfill our Baptismal commitment. Following the example of St. Thomas of Villanova, our patron, we take as our challenge the mission of Jesus and strive to love and experience God through worship, social justice, education and evangelization. A Note from Fr. Joe. This is one of those Sundays in Ordinary Time where a Feast takes precedence in this case, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. It gives us another opportunity to ponder, beyond the Lenten Season and Good Friday in particular, this incredible symbol of Jesus love for us. So what do we see when we look at the crucifix? Perhaps we fail to even notice it or we take it for granted. As I once preached on a Good Friday, it would be impossible to count the number of times that we ve signed ourselves with the cross, wouldn t it? Yet, let s be honest, when did we last sincerely give some thought to what we were doing, what the cross means in our lives? In referring to the cross, St. Augustine advises, Place your hope up there, place your love up there, ask for strength from up there, look for your reward from up there. (Sermon 165) Because Jesus chose to take on the cross, he helps us carry ours and experience tells me that we each have some cross to bear, be it an addiction, not getting a job, being picked on at school, a ruptured relationship, or the jolting diagnosis of an illness for ourselves or a loved one. Christ is never nearer to us than when we lift up our cross or when we assist others in carrying theirs. For the cross isn t about suffering for suffering s sake, but it s about love and service and following Jesus the Christ s example. It s what we committed to in our Baptism. He emptied himself he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on the cross. But, as St. Paul goes on in his Letter to the Philippians, Because of this, God greatly exalted him; thus, the name of the Feast that we celebrate this Sunday, echoing a phrase we Augustinians use at the end of prayer every day Through the cross You brought joy to the world. As Christians, we re called to believe those posters in many a football end zone John 3:16 contained in our Gospel passage, For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that one who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. We trust that the cross brings Resurrection reconciliation, recovery, new life. Is that what we see when we look at the crucifix? Is that what we recall when we sign ourselves with the cross? Again, harkening to our Baptism, these words were used to bless the water of the font May all who are buried with Christ in the death of Baptism rise also with him to newness of life. That s our hope, that s our faith, that s why we can sing this day and every day lift high the cross! Finally, it s apparent from Mass attendance alone last weekend that summer is basically over and most, if not all, have returned from well-deserved vacations. There s a lot going on, so please be sure to check out the rest of this bulletin and our parish website for more information. On behalf of Godfrey Nazareth and his family, thank you for your support; the Staff is looking forward to seeing photos of your response to our Ice Bucket Challenge! And, men of the parish, I hope you can make our first gathering of the new year this Thursday, the 18 th, beginning at 6:30am in the Rosemont Chapel. God Bless! Fr. Joe Stewardship Thought for the Week For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son. John 3:16 God gave us the gift of His son so we can enjoy eternal salvation. Of all our gifts, our life, is the most precious. We belong to God. This is why we must take time every day to ask Him how He wants us to use the life He has given us. 2 The St. Thomas of Villanova Staff Challenges YOU to the ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE for our parishioner Godfrey Nazareth and his family. Getting to know Godfrey.. I am a biomedical engineer, and a research scientist by profession. My lovely wife Sweta, and I consider ourselves to be incredibly blessed to be parishioners here at St Thomas of Villanova. We have a beautiful daughter Anya, 7. In addition to designing medical devices and formulating pharmaceuticals, some of my passions include robotics, linguistics and semantics, volunteering my time as a research scientist at the Children s Hospital of Philadelphia, my family, and most of all my relationship with God as His Steward of many gifts. I had a wonderful and faith filled childhood; I was an altar boy for several years, serving at the daily mass, doing readings on Sunday, playing guitar, singing back up and harmonies in the choir. And while I was still a young graduate student pursuing my Masters in Biomedical engineering at Drexel University, I begin to notice subtle changes in my balance and speech. After an assortment of tests, painful biopsies and scans lasting over many years, in 2012 I was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease, possibly a non-classical, atypical progression of ALS, unique only to me; makes me feel special and chosen by God, one out of over seven billion people! I do not believe in limits, I love to think of the sky as only the beginning! Even though the prognosis may appear to be bleak, I do believe in miracles and choose to wake up each morning with a massive burst of Faith and Hope. I continue to function with deep conviction that a breakthrough on many levels is imminent. Thank you so much fellow STV parishioners for taking the challenge, for your amazing support, continued prayers, and your overwhelming Love! With incredible gratitude, Godfrey Nazareth and Family If you wish to participate, please make your check out to Godfrey Nazareth (cash is welcome), and put your gift in an envelope with Godfrey s name on it and * drop it into the offertory basket at any parish Liturgy * drop it off at the Parish Center * Mail it to the Parish Center Your donation is being made directly to the Nazareth Family. Please send us a picture of your family taking the Ice Bucket Challenge and we will fill posterboards for display at the back of our churches. Thank you.
