1 THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 29, 2017 A Note from Fr. Michael.. In today s Gospel, we see the Sadducees and the Pharisees unite in a joint effort to trap Jesus. Their alliance is extremely unusual because they were both politically and religiously at the opposite ends of the spectrum. The Sadducees were the liberal priestly class, who were largely secular in their outlook. The Pharisees, on the other hand were mostly lay people who were religious zealots. They advocated the strict observance of the Mosaic Law, and they longed for the expulsion of the Roman occupiers. From the outset, it is important to note that this unlikely liaison was based on mutual enmity of Jesus. In biblical times, law meant the Mosaic Law contained in the first five books of the Old Testament known as the Torah and regarded by the Jews as the most sacred part of the Old Testament. In the Mosaic Law, there are 613 different laws. The revered Ten Commandments were but the basis of this large body of laws. Jesus contemporaries were largely illiterate, making learning or remembering 613 laws daunting, to say the least. Since salvation was directly related to observation of these laws, the distinction between grave and less grave laws was argued by the Sadducees. The Pharisees, on the other hand, believed all 613 were equally important. This being the case, Jesus is asked the tricky question, Which is the greatest commandment? If he picks one commandment over the others, the Pharisees will condemn him for downgrading the Law. If he replied that all were of equal importance, the Sadducees would condemn him for putting the average person in an impossible bind. Jesus was truly caught in between the horns of a dilemma. Jesus escapes brilliantly by citing not one but two commandments from the Torah on which the entire Law is based. The first is from Deuteronomy: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with your entire mind. The second is from Leviticus: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. By making a distinction, Jesus offers no offense to the Sadducees who felt a hierarchy was necessary. And by picking two that are clearly all-inclusive of the others, he gave no reason for offense to the Pharisees either. To sum up, at a time when religion was multiplying commands and requirements for salvation, making life more difficult for the average person, Jesus simplified it all putting it in everyone s grasp. If we love God and Neighbor, we will fulfill all of God s commands. It s within our grasp but it s not easy. Stewardship Thought for the Week You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. Matthew 22:37 Do you put other gods before God? Is your love of money, power, status or some personal possession greater than your love for God? Do you really recognize that everything you have and everything you are is a gift from God? The good news it s not too late to put God first in your life in all things. Focus of the support program is the Mother & the new family. Mother and New Family Support: The postpartum period is a critical phase in the lives of mothers and newborn babies and hence this stage affects the entire family. Breastfeeding Milk, no milk, too much milk or not enough, all this can cause stress. Support for breastfeeding or bottle feeding. Transitions Transitions can be challenging and the transitioning to a new family order benefits from support and encouragement.
