1 PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD APRIL 9, 2017 Almsgiving and St. Augustine Friends, Let me invite you to spend a few minutes with Augustine on the Lenten theme of the parish: almsgiving. Looking back to when he first came to Hippo, he said: I came to this Church with only the clothes I was wearing at the time I began to gather together brothers of good will, my companions in poverty, having nothing just like me. (Sermon 355, 2) Augustine learned much from a phrase of St. Paul, What do you have that you have not received? (1 Cor. 4:7); it gave him and can give us a beautiful awareness of how we are part of the flow from one generation to the next, passing on the lessons that inspire us to share. Early in Lent Augustine said: All of you, be of one mind and heart, all of you faithfully faithful See to it that none of you envies, none of you mocks in another the gift of God which you don't have in yourself. In the matter of spiritual goods, regard as your own what you love and admire in your brother or sister; let them regard as their own what they love and admire in you. (Sermon 205, 3) Generosity is not limited to Lent, nor was it just about giving time, talent or treasure. It was supposed to help everyone be open and united with everyone else. Almsgiving had to begin with kindness toward oneself: What does Give alms mean? It means, Show mercy. What does show mercy mean? To understand it, start with yourself. For, how can you be merciful to someone else, if you are cruel to yourself? Give alms, and everything is clean for you (Lk 11:41). What does alms mean? It means mercy. Listen to scripture: Have mercy on your soul, pleasing God (Sir 30:23). Giving alms is to have mercy on your soul and please God. (Sermon 106, 4) Clearly, loving one s neighbor means loving oneself, thus making it possible to reach out to the poor in a healthy way. Let the hungry Christ receive what the fasting Christian receives less of. (Sermon 210, 12) True love of self is love of Christ, for we belong to his body. True love of neighbor is also loving Christ. But Augustine was also concerned that the poor might be able to give alms. This is an alms deed of great value and profit, to forgive your fellow Christian Someone can say, I would like to give to the poor, but I haven't got anything to spare ; or I've only got so much, and I'm afraid of being left in want if I give anything away. but who could possibly say, The reason I didn't grant him pardon when he asked, is that my health prevented me, or because I didn't have a hand to hold it out to him with? Forgive, in order to be forgiven yourself. (Sermon 210, 12) How true to see that, just as fasting from quarrels is real fasting, so too is giving forgiveness real almsgiving. Therefore, let everyone do it according to his means. Your extras are someone else's necessities. You heard just now, when the gospel was being read, Whoever gives a cup of cold water to one of my little ones for my sake shall not lose his reward (Mt 10:42). God has put the kingdom of heaven up for sale, and fixed the price of it at a cup of cold water. When it is a poor person giving alms those alms should be a cup of cold water. If you've got more you should give more. (Sermon 39, 6) What is thorough and complete almsgiving? Out of your abundance to give to anyone who has nothing, and when anyone does you harm, to forgive them. (Sermon 9, 17) Fr. Allan Fitzgerald, O.S.A. Stewardship Thought for the Week As they were marching out, they came upon a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, this man they pressed into service to carry His cross. Matthew 27:32 The Lord calls us to love God and to love our neighbor. Every day we are presented with opportunities to love our neighbor and help him carry his cross. These opportunities aren't usually big events, they are usually ordinary occurrences like helping someone carry their groceries or holding the door open form them. The key is putting the other person s needs before our own and not expecting anything in return. 5 Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office of the Archbishop 222 North 17th Street Philadelphia, PA Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, April 9, 2017 On Good Friday, April 14, 2017, we celebrate the mystery of the Lord s Passion, contemplating the sacrifice by which Jesus redeemed the human race from sin and death. It also has been our longstanding tradition as Catholics to offer alms in support of the Catholic Community in the Holy Land. As directed by our Holy Father, Pope Francis, funds generated by this collection support programs and services in the Holy Land. Support is needed to maintain the sacred places, to provide educational and pastoral programs as well as outreach programs for the poor through established charitable institutions. On behalf of those Christians and others in so much need, I seek your most generous and sacrificial support of the Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land on April 14, I know that God our Father will reward your generosity beyond all measure. Gratefully and with best wishes in Jesus Christ, Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Archbishop of Philadelphia Parish Bulletin News St. Thomas of Villanova Preschool Spring has helped the children understand the New Life of Jesus during the Easter Season. This year STV s Lenten theme is Almsgiving, and there will be many opportunities for giving. You will find the board in both churches with a leafless tree; consider this our Almsgiving Tree to which we will add leaves to represent our acts of Almsgiving throughout Lent. All are encouraged to add leaves with each of their acts of giving written on them. The intent is to create a beautiful leaf-filled tree in both churches by the end of Lent, as powerful symbols of our giving in preparation for Easter. Markers, leaves, and tape have been provided. Please note that one of the first steps is the closure of Church Walk from Lancaster Avenue to the Villanova Church plaza. If you haven t been doing so already, please use the temporary walkway just west of Church Walk. In terms of Church parking, particularly for Sunday Masses, the preferred option is that you turn right at the top of St. Thomas Way and head to the spaces behind Moriarty Hall or beyond (designated as L-2 parking). Please be sure to use the crosswalk and follow the pedestrian signals at the St. Thomas Way intersection. This is the only safe way to cross Lancaster Avenue in that vicinity. Then follow the temporary walkway (noted above) to the Church. Construction will last through the rest of the year, with the Bridge opening perhaps in time for Christmas. As always, if you have special mobility needs, you can park on campus near the Church but please be respectful of spaces near the Monastery reserved for the friars who live there.
