She is the patroness of the Carmelite Order, who were hermits in the late 12 th century who lived on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land. Carmelites have a brown robe with a piece of cloth that hangs over the front and the back, called a scapular. Since the 15 th century, there has been a devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel for laypeople to join in the fruits of the Carmelite Order. The sacramental, which is known as the brown scapular, is a much smaller brown cloth that the person wears around his or her neck and falls on the chest and the back of the person. It has been part of the devotion that the one who dies while wearing a brown scapular would be saved. Mount Carmel itself is featured prominently in the Old Testament in regards to the Prophet Elijah. It was on Mount Carmel that Elijah defeated the priests of Baal, as well as the mountaintop where Elijah prayed for rain to end the drought affecting Israel. The Carmelites look to Elijah as their spiritual father in the religious order. Connected to the wearing of the brown scapular is what is called the Sabbatine privilege. Pope John XXII, in 1322, wrote a document in which he claims that the Blessed Mother appeared to him and said, "I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday (Sabbath) after their death and whomsoever I shall find in Purgatory, I shall free, so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life everlasting." To receive this Sabbatine privilege, you must fulfill three requirements. First, you must wear the brown scapular; second, you must observe chastity to your state in life; and third, you must pray the rosary. It is said that in order to receive the spiritual blessings associated with the Scapular, it is necessary to be formally enrolled in the Brown Scapular by a priest. Once enrolled, no other Scapular need be blessed before wearing. The blessing and imposition are attached to the wearer for life. There is a beautiful statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in St. Peter s Church in our cluster. Also, some of the more famous Carmelite saints, are St. John of the Cross, St. Theresa of Avila, St. Therese of Liseaux, St. Simon Stock, and soon to be canonized St. Elizabeth of the Trinity. Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us. 7 JULY 10 TH, 2016 Organ Masterclasses for Archdiocesan Musicians 115 Grove Street, Torrington, CT ANNUAL SUMMERTIME CAMPAIGN Despite the summertime fun and vacations that come with the good weather, many mothers & children still need assistance in our communities. Two Hearts needs your help to meet their needs Two Hearts Pregnancy Care Center is a community based, nonprofit organization located in Torrington, Connecticut. The Center services women in northwestern Connecticut as they face the challenges of an unplanned pregnancy and raising their children without basic resources. We have been fortunate to be able to provide emotional support, parenting skills and supplies (diapers, clothing, baby food, formula, cribs, etc.) to all those who come to our door. The demand for our services continues to grow as new mothers, despite facing difficult challenges in their lives, have made the decision to give their children life and turn to Two Hearts for assistance. However, during the summertime, as people leave for vacations and partake in other summer enjoyment, the donations to Two Hearts dramatically decrease. Please help us meet the basic needs of these mothers and children by making a donation today. Help these mothers and children enjoy their summertime. Two Hearts mission is the pro-life message of the Catholic faith in action. Our success has been made possible by an outstanding team of volunteers, financial support from numerous individuals, such as yourself, local organizations, the Catholic parishes in northwestern Connecticut, and the Archbishop s Annual Appeal.
